Is this project generating any work for windows machines? I've had a Windows 10 machine attached for several months and nada . . . I used to get work up until a year or so -- stopped getting work so removed the project from my four machines and put them to work on other things. Then reconnected one machine awhile back and still nada . . .

I seem to recall that there is a way to specify what type of WUs are allowed to run on a user's machines, but I can find that. I thought that it was in the project preferences, but I don't see it now. I have not gotten any WUs for some time even though the server status page shows that some are available. Am I missing something?

My credits just dropped from 1 mil+ to 0 -- zip! And the project no longer shows up on BOINC Stats! Good move guys. . .

You have to understand the nature of this work. This is not a "mission critical" computer endeavor. This not like credit card processing, or bank account processing, or medical record processing. If things are "messed up", it can wait until whatever.

In that case, they can wait until "whatever" for me to again donate my computer time to their "unimportant" project.

Where, exactly??

Post:
The last seven "HadCM3 Short" tasks sent to my primary machine (running WinXP) have all crashed, apparently without doing any useful work. A few such tasks sent to my other two machines (running Win7) have successfully completed, but most have not.

I believe that this project is doing (or at least is attempting to do) useful climate science, but WUs that do nothing but crash are not contributing anything useful. If these tasks "do not like Windows", then why send them to Windows machines??

I have seen some blame placed on the fact that they are written in FORTRAN -- I suspect that the problem lies more in the coding rather than the coding platform. I learned over 40 years ago that if one wants to produce robust code, one has to take precautions within the code to insure that stuff like divisions by zero (or extremely small numbers) and do-nothing loops do not occur and not depend on the coding platform do it for them.

In any event, I will no longer waste computer time attempting to run "HadCM3s" tasks.

Error messages for each model, are on the server page for each of the models.
. . .

Thanks for the info.

All of the crashed WUs show similar error info:

(0x16) - exit code 22 (0x16)

I hope this is useful information. In the meantime, I am not accepting any more "climateprediction.net" work.

My last five WUs were "UK Met Office HadCM3 short v7.24" and they all suffered a "computation error" after running about 45 minutes with CPU time shown as only a few seconds. (On my machine "LEPC")

I can't find any error messages -- but maybe I don't know where to look. The only thing that looks like an error are several messages of the form "23-Sep-2014 23:13:40 [climateprediction.net] Output file hadcm3s_2bi1_2001_2_009022880_4_2.zip for task hadcm3s_2bi1_2001_2_009022880_4 absent" in the file "stdoutae.txt" located in ". . . /Application Date/BOINC".

And for the record, I have NO PROBLEMS running Astroids, LHC, World Community or Cosmology CPU tasks or Seti, Einstein or Milkyway GPU tasks.

You said:

1. You can stop the BOINC Manager and all of the applications.

2. Edit the file statistics_climateprediction.net.xml in the BOINC folder.

3. Delete the group of lines with the obviously wrong info.

4. Save.

5. Re-start BOINC.

That made the "total host" credit number show correctly, but the "total user" credit is still displayed by the BOINC manager as 12901857519.579731 (!!) (Total host credit is shown correctly as 551,149 on my "account" page.)

When I press "update", then the following gets appended to statistics_climateprediction.net.xml:

<daily_statistics>
<day>1409702400.000000</day>
<user_total_credit>12901857519.579731</user_total_credit>
<user_expavg_credit>406.314666</user_expavg_credit>
<host_total_credit>294661.637691</host_total_credit>
<host_expavg_credit>173.418555</host_expavg_credit>
</daily_statistics>

So something is still supplying a bogus number for total user credit to my BOINC manager. (??)

Oh well, I suppose everything will eventually get straightened out. . .

For what it's worth, no credits have been sent to any of my three machines since June 3. And one machine finished a task a couple of days ago, apparently successfully, and this site shows 0 credits granted.

Hopefully it will all come out in the wash sooner than later . . .

If that's a problem then it is always possible to deselect the HADCM3N models from your project preferences and select another model type.

Good point -- I'll deselect HADCM3N. But not much else seems to be available lately...

And with the tight deadline for completion of the RAPIT project, (it may even be past it, due to problems getting out the bugs at the start of the year), there's just no time to "be nice" to single core/multi project crunchers.

If that is the project's attitude, then I'll just donate my puny little computers' time elsewhere... :-(

Oh and yes, the CPDN models do take weeks (or months!) to run. That's normal.

And while it's running at high priority on a single core machine, nothing else gets done until one of the other WU's gets near its 'due date'. The problem would be resolved if the due date (of the HADAM3P WU's) was made much longer. Previous ClimatePrediction WU's typically had a due date about one year in the future -- in which case the run time estimate was always << less than the time until the due date.

EDIT: I just noticed that the offending WU's are HADCM3N's rather than HADAM3P's -- guess this is the wrong thread... :-[

The project is still having problems with the new enhancement, as per the News and Announcements thread.

I couldn't find anything in the 'News and Announcements' about cross-project statistics not being updated... Apparently they haven't been for over a week now. So... will there be a huge bump in credits shown by BOINCstats, etc. when the problem gets solved? Just wondering...

By the way, the new temporary sysadmin has finished the database upgrade and is waiting for users to report that their credits are OK before he turns all the daemons back on.

For what it's worth, according to my local BOINC manager my credit is 116237, and according to BOINCstats it is 115685.
