41) Questions and Answers : Windows : Unrecoverable Error, then Climate Chage Experiment is Idle (permanently) (Message 20720)

Have you tried the standard fixes for this, which do work for some people (Upgrade graphics drivers, Windows update using custom/optional updates)?

For those getting this on download, booting into safe mode for the download and until the first save point seems to work.

But there is no guaranteed cure.

This machine is being hit by the 1073741819 error, which is a Windows error code. This is why you are getting a Windows message. There is no known infallible cure, and it may have several causes, but some people have fixed it with an update of their graphics drivers, and in at least one case a Windows update (custom option). At the least it is worth trying.

There is no reason to suppose you will get this at school, where the setup is probably different, but of course no promises can be made. Whether Windows app error messages can be suppressed at your end I\'m not certain, but no doubt a Google search...

In the \"Tasks\" tab I only have the option to suspend \"sulphur_inuj_200870715\", the other 2 I can only resume (BUT I can see them in the Tasks tab!).

I would expect you to have another button in the tasks tab called \'abort\' (but I am running a slightly different version of BOINC from yours). The normal way of getting rid of workunits you do not want is to click on them and then on abort. Then you can delete the relevant directories manually; you would not have to close BOINC but it would do no harm to do a backup of the whole BOINC/Experiment folder anyway, which would require that the program is closed. You should not need a reboot. If you are wondering how to start the program manually and do not have a desktop icon create one (use send to desktop).

The code 500 upload error has affected a few BOINC users. There is an explanation here.

If this does not help, or makes no sense, ask again.

I can\'t seem to get into the Account Manager in BOINC but I am set up on the climateprediction site. Can you tell from the other end whether what I\'m doing is as expected ?

If I click on your name I can view your computer and results. That indicates that your old model crashed and there is a new one running, but the error code tells us nothing, unfortunately.

Nevertheless, it points to me as being a graphics problem. Try an upgrade of the graphics drivers, and a Windows update using the custom option for good measure (look at the optional updates).

Help anybody? Still can\'t do this!

Sorry, the BBC experiment has been keeping people busy with an influx of new users.

It looks as though something at your end is blocking communication. The obvious answer would be a firewall - often they don\'t do you the courtesy of telling you that they have done so.

If this does not seem to be the issue and you have the patience, you could look on the BOINC Wiki where there is a long article on troubleshooting network problems.

And there are much more knowledgeable people who call this way who might have the answer if you can pin it down, or try the other CPDN board - the forum.

I\'d be inclined to run the coupled (BBC) model on its own, given its size. The exception would be people with dual core processors, but for most of us that requires another upgrade.

When the sulphur model is finished it will be clear what the project wants tackling next, and it might well be a coupled model anyway.

I\'m not sure what is happening here, but you can view what is actually happening in the graphics window (highlight the \'running\' workunit in the work tab). You should be able to see the timesteps passing by.

If you cannot, try restarting (close the program from BOINC Manager with file/exit) and failing that reboot the computer.

Come back again if things are not right.

I would not expect you to be having these problems with your computer, which is a quite capable one, but yes it can be fixed.

When you click on the X in the top right corner of BOINC Manager that does not close BOINC or the climateprediction program, only the window. That is by design.

Normally, the climateprediction program will give way to other tasks, but for some people there seems to be something, probably other tasks they are running, that prevents this happening smoothly. When you find that you are having a problem, try suspending BOINC (right click on the icon or from \'commands\' in the BOINC Manager window). If you find that it solves things, either do that whenever you run the program that seems to struggle, or if necessary alter your general preferences (in \'My account\' on this website) not to run BOINC when the computer is in use.

why is Climateprediction showing my results as \"Client error\"

According to your details the workunit you should be processing at the moment is this one: http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/result.php?resultid=1836716

Are you saying that there has been a problem amd it is no longer running? It isn\'t showing at the server end.

The message \'Result sulphur_i5xi_200847494_0 exited with zero status but no \'finished\' file\' is nothing to worry about.
53) Questions and Answers : Preferences : Work units - why a restriction? (Message 20383)
Posted 17 Feb 2006 by Profile Andrew Hingston
Post:
Actually, the old classic experiment did impose just such a limit not long after the launch, though it was a bit looser and not so transparent. It was to stop computers that were having problems hammering the servers fruitlessly. As the new workunits take many weeks even on fast computers, repeated requests can only indicate some sort of failure, and slow drip feeding is best. Waiting a day makes little difference in the long run.

Version 5.3.19 might not be the problem, but error 1073741819 has been affecting a few people. It is a Windows error indicating a system conflict, but is non specific and seems to have had various causes. Solutions that seem to have worked for some people include updating graphics divers, Windows update (choose the custom option), booting into safe mode if it is happening on download, or just reattaching and even a restart.

When you say that you downloaded the BBC project, do you mean that you used the download button, or attached from your existing BOINC Manager?

If the former, it should have tried to install a new version of BOINC Manager with a different default install path. Usually, people who have done this complain that they cannot find their old BOINC projects ;-) As that hasn\'t happened to you, and you don\'t remeber being asked to register, I suspect that somethng failed, possibly because of server overload. Personally, I wouldn\'t worry about it. When you are ready to take part in that experiment it might well be available here.

It will come, but when is the question.

Carl said yesterday that it was about a year away. There is too much to do in the meantime, and there are too few machines around yet to raise it up the priority list.

He says it is largely the scientists who are responsible for making the 1,000,000 lines of code in the program such a headache for him as a software engineer. ;)

Like most media organisations the BBC are prone to exaggeration. On the other hand they are giving it enormous publicity, and we know that what they are actually promoting is BOINC and CPDN even if they do not say so. It will be up to us to persuade these new users to join us properly.

Oh dear. Yes it\'s a Windows error. Could be a graphics conflict, so try updating your drivers as that might fix it.

Otherwise, there might be any number of explanations. But if it crashes on download, you might try suspending network connection and booting into safe mode with the network enabled, then try and get BOINC to download a WU. Some people have found that works. Once you have got past the download, it should run in normal mode.

any ideas of what the problem is

It looks to be the same as this user. I don\'t promise either suggestion will work, but it is one of those mysterious computer errors that might have more than one cause and more than one solution.
