21) Questions and Answers : Wish list : again a call for smaller workunits! (Message 21356)
Posted 16 Mar 2006 by Profile Andrew Hingston
Post:
There is a climateprediction experiment being run currently which has smaller workunits - the Seasonal Attribution Project. But that requires a fast computer and a lot of memory. As Les hints, there are few easy ways of doing climateresearch because of the complexity of the mechanisms involved.
22) Questions and Answers : Windows : Model exits with zero status right before trickles (Message 21355)

The message is certainly disconcerting though many people have experienced it and decided it is benign. One person has discovered that it was caused by his Windows time synchronisation, but that clearly isn\'t the explanation here.
23) Questions and Answers : Windows : New (TCM ?) Models keep failing (Message 21352)

this new client doesn\'t seem to do anything with the desktop icon, or at least doesn\'t advise of messages like the old client.

If you haven\'t met the Manager before it takes some getting used to, but then we forget there was a time before it existed. Start with this page in the BOINC Wiki and see if it helps.
24) Questions and Answers : Windows : Report deadline changed to 12/13/1901 (Message 21351)
Posted 16 Mar 2006 by Profile Andrew Hingston
Post:
You do not have to abort. This message occurs if the computer clock resets, usually because of a faulty internal battery. If you are only attached to climateprediction you could carry on regardless as this project does not worry about deadlines even though BOINC does. If you are, or want to, attach to other projects you will need to sort it out though. This thread contains a fix.

Speed does change over the lifetime of a model, but not normally by much. Bear in mind that s/TS is averaged over the entire progress of the model, so the most usual reason for a fall is that something happened earlier to cause a slowdown such as a rewind to an earlier point (which may well be what happened in your case).
26) Questions and Answers : Windows : How to complete \"lost\" units (Message 21177)
Posted 9 Mar 2006 by Profile Andrew Hingston
Post:
Sadly, there is no way of completing a failed workunit without a backup. It is a good point about closing down gracefully - it might account for some of the problems that newcomers to the BBC experiment have been experiencing.

I use now ZoneAlarm AV - which does the famous firewall *and* anti-virus, BTW quite efficiently doing live updates !! Do you think I should try to exclude the Boinc dir. with this AV ?

The advice from Carl, the chief programmer, is that it is only necessary to exclude the projects directory in BOINC, which contains no executables. Whilst you should be OK, there is a risk of future problems with any AV software, so I would be inclined to exclude this folder, but others may disagree.

What are openGL and openGL drivers ?

There\'s more advice here on graphics.

I normally don\'t play PC-games (even the ones contained in Windows, which are probably not very \'dangerous\'. But my question: what includes your \'etc\' ? (please just make it a bit more precise - e.g. by examples)

I doubt that you will have trouble playing something like Hearts, but a lot of role playing games, a game like Civilization 4, flight and railway simulators, and so on, make very intensive use of graphics in particular.

29) Questions and Answers : Windows : Activities Suspended? (Message 21007)
Posted 3 Mar 2006 by Profile Andrew Hingston
Post:
If you look in the project tab you should see the climateprojection project. Is there anything in the status column? In the left pane there should be buttons saying \'suspend\' and \'no new work\'. If they say \'resume\' or \'allow new work\' click on them (you may need to highlight the project first).

If there is nothing there to suggest that activity is suspended, look in the commands menu (top of the Manager window). Try \'run always\' if not selected. Does it run now?
30) Questions and Answers : Windows : Sulphur Cycle keeps crashing (Message 20987)

It is a pity that you have no control over the anti virus software, as there is a possibility that is the culprit, though I agree that it is odd that the problem did not manifest itself before. There is a report of Sophos AV software crashing the program because it has detected a sequence of code it thinks wrongly is a virus, so these things can hit you out of the blue.

On Prime95, there is an explanation here. You will see it is a popular way of stress testing a computer.

the fact is too many \"jobs\" in the climateprediction project never complete and I have to reset the project. This happens very often.

We cannot be sure from the error messages why your jobs are failing, but the experience of others suggests that it may well be caused by your virus scanner. If excluding the BOINC folder from scans and autoprotection does not work then come back and we will suggest other possibilities. Resetting the project should not normally be necessary.

Save points, known in BOINC as checkpoints, are hardwired into the CPDN program, and in current models occur every 6 model days. There is no ability to create intermediate save points. If an application is removed from memory it necessarily has to restart from the last save point, known in the CPDN program as as restart day (because it has the ability, if necessary, to go back to a previous month or year). There is mare about BOINC checkpointing here.
33) Questions and Answers : Windows : Upgrade 4.10 to 5.2.13? (Message 20894)

Deleting and reinstalling boinc *shouldn\'t* trash the Model. Don\'t know what happened to your work last time.

Apparently one of the .xml files can occasionally get corrupted in the process. So a backup is useful.

I\'ve now seen evidence that this error can indeed be caused by virus scanning. So excluding the BOINC folder from scanning/autoprotect would be important.
36) Questions and Answers : Getting started : delete unused computer from account (Message 20873)

Post:
I\'ve looked on the computer summary page which I accessed from my account page, but there isn\'t a merge function there.

The page geophi is referring to, headed computer summary, is a whole page listing information about that computer only - you can drill down to it by clicking on the ID number in the list of your computers. At the bottom, the last item should be a merge option which you can select.

This is unusual with WinXP, though it can happen when people are gaming sometimes. First thing would be to read the advice in this sticky on the BBC board. After that, it is worth considering whether there is any other pattern to it, any graphics program that might be conflicting. And Fortran errors are sometimes associated with hardware problems as well. Virus scanners also cause failures, though not usually this error, so excluding the BOINC folder could be worth a try.

As you have your computers hidden I cannot look for myself, but if you look at your result for this workunit (in Your account) you will probably see an error message. If you paste it here we may be able to give you some advice.
40) Message boards : climateprediction.net Science : Query - Help required with moving from one computer to another... (Message 20722)
Posted 24 Feb 2006 by Profile Andrew Hingston
Post:
If you are running only climateprediction it ought to be straightforward.

Essentially, all you need to do is move the whole BOINC folder to the new machine, install BOINC into that folder, and you should carry on where you left off. If you use a CD/DVD for the transfer, you will need to reset the write permissions first.

If you are running other projects besides CPDN/BBC, run down their cache first.
