I do believe that showing/hiding the globe is one of the visualisation options, though I haven\'t tried it... Have a look and see if you can turn it back on in the visualiser. One of the function keys if I remember rightly.

2) Questions and Answers : Windows : Win98 now crashing on HADSM3 4.13 WU\'s (Message 16734)

If you are trying to run CPDN on BOINC under W98/ME it won\'t work... CPDN on BOINC under W98/ME is NOT supported... Either use Classic CPDN or try another OS.

I believe that you will have better luck with NT4 if your H/W can cope with it.

3) Questions and Answers : Windows : auto detach? (Message 16733)
Posted 23 Oct 2005 by Gareth Lock
Post:
A connection problem may cause a project to auto detach. Check your firewall settings, there have been reports of one of the recent windows patches \'loosing\' the BOINC entry in the firewall.

The guy mentions that his other projects work fine... Surely if BOINC had been knocked off his firewall\'s \"trusted\" list then wouldn\'t it affect ALL BOINC projects?

Personally I would tag it to the server downtime period recently had the date of the post been older, but yeah... Connection issue... Definately.

4) Questions and Answers : Windows : *** Database Down *** (Message 16730)

Post:
Yeah me again... Checked the machine in question and it seems to have trickled OK. All I can think of was that it tried a number of times whilst the server was down and built up a huge exponential back-off value. Which had to time out before it would trickle.

So...

Case closed.

Post:
They came up about 16 hours ago, about 9.30am Oxford time.
I sent 8 trickles at 17 Oct 2005 09:58:35, and 2 more since then.

Thanks Les... I\'ll have a look at the connectivity of the machine in question, because I still couldn\'t see the trickle server on the 18th when I posted the original message.

Would be nice to have some information regards to the current downtime for the BOINC servers. Any news as to when they\'re coming up? Been trying to trickle for the last couple of days now. (That I know of.)

If you're still coming up warm, then try going for a bigger heatsink on your processor. I have a block rated for a 3000+ on my 1900+ CPU and it still ran in the mid 60s today. Even my laptop is running hot!! If you're considering swapping the heatsink, go for an all copper model and use a decent silver-oxide paste rather than the cheap pads.

During the heatwave/sticky weather we are having in the UK at the moment, you need to take precautions against trouble like this and early, especially on a normally unattended BOINC machine.

I can't testify as to the stability of v4.12 hadsm, because, at the moment, my 1900+ is still soldiering away on a previous model for v4.10.

&gt; &gt; I've given it a good clean out now and is is still running about 60-66
&gt; degrees
&gt; &gt; C at a constant 100% CPU, a few degrees cooler when not running CDPN.
&gt; I'm
&gt; &gt; currently monitoring the CPU temperature.
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt; I have a Gigabyte motherboard (Via KT880), if that makes a difference.
&gt; &gt;
&gt; Gigabyte's do read hotter than most other motherboards. 60-66C is obviously
&gt; better than 70C, but still warm, even for a Gigabyte. Try Gareth's suggestion
&gt; of running with the case open and see if that helps. If it does, you can try
&gt; to see if you can get better airflow through the case.
&gt;

My 1900+ is running at about 54-57C at the moment, I consider that on the warm side and indeed, it has locked up on me recently a number of times. If you can, I would consider adding a couple of chassis fans to your setup to try and keep the air inside the case moving. See <a href="http://www.garethlock.shorturl.com/index.htm?boinc">my entry here on keeping your machine cool</a> for more of my tips.

As a system builder, I would suggest that you seriously take another look at the cooling solution you have on that CPU! 70C is way way too high. Try running the machine with the case open and look for snagging cables, dust &amp; detritus. I can guarantee here that this temperature issue, while possibly not being the cause of the problem, is greatly exasipating it!

I've been having problems with the latest devs too... But if you can get hold of the installer for CC v4.35, I don't think you'll be disappointed. It seems to me to be the most usable of what's been coming out of the BOINC stable of late.

Recently I've seen quite a few posts on various BOINC forums asking about what to do to get a machine running cool again. So... Being a PC builder myself, I've put together a few words on the subject which can be found on my SETI/BOINC page <a href="www.garethlock.shorturl.com/index.htm?seti">here</a>

Hope this helps

13) Questions and Answers : Windows : Upgrading Boinc 4.19 to 4.25 in middle of model ? (Message 11770)
Posted 11 Apr 2005 by Gareth Lock
Post:
I've moved with the dev versions and am currently using v4.27 which is quite hapilly crunching CPDN on one system. This was also upgraded from v4.26 and previous versions without any problems when done mid unit, though I did wait for my phase 3 one to complete before I made the move from v4.19 to v4.22 many moons ago.

I would however, make a copy of the entire BOINC directory BEFORE you uninstall v4.19! You'll need to do this before installing the new version as the two installers (Windows at least) are incompatible with each other.

Hope this helps

14) Questions and Answers : Windows : crash (Message 11645)
Posted 6 Apr 2005 by Gareth Lock
Post:
&gt; I have also the problems with error -2 and -5 with hsdsm Version 4.10 and 4.12
&gt; with Boinc 4.19 and 4.25. The computer has no problems with WU from
&gt; Einstein@Hme and Predictor@Home.
&gt; The computer seems to be hanging after the crash. Sometimes I am not able to
&gt; shutdown the system (GUI or from the shell).
&gt;
I'm running HADSM v4.10 with CC v4.26 on AMD AthlonXP 1900+ with 512MB RAM. I haven't experienced any of the problems you've been having with HADSM v4.10.

The only things that I would suggest to all CPDN users is to watch your temperatures. BOINC projects drive CPU temps sky high!!!

15) Questions and Answers : Windows : hard disk use with BOINC (Message 11644)
Posted 6 Apr 2005 by Gareth Lock
Post:
CPDN will take a minimum of 450-500MB whilst working on a model (model sizes are about 350MB each!). CPDN will store it's results for each WU both completed or failed until you manually deleted the directory, so you need to keep this in check or disk space requirements will go through the roof!! What I do is delete failed WU results directories and write a full CD-R when I have enough successful results to fill one.

PP@H will take anything up to about 20-25MB (depending on the size of your WU cache). SETI about 5-10MB (again this depends on your work cache). LHC about 20MB and the same for Einstein.

Hope this helps.

16) Questions and Answers : Windows : All Port Scan Attack (Message 11480)
Posted 29 Mar 2005 by Gareth Lock
Post:
Not had this problem myself, but this sort of behaviour might tally up with the fact that the box I run CPDN on couldn't see the CPDN scheduler, or the website for that matter. This could indicate some sort of infection or attack on the project server, let's hope they have this one nailed.

Confirmed... Downloaded hadsm v4.10 at about 15:10 today (14/03/05) along with a WU and continued to crunch quite happily... So far!!

Using CC v4.26, Existing model failed in phase 1 after six trickles giving me 560 odd credit. Now not able to get more work.

Message log states... (All from ClimatePrediction.net)
Unrecoverable error for result 1qxj_500102393_0 ( - exit code -1073741502 (0xc0000142))
Deferring communication with project for 59 seconds
Computation for result 1qxj_500102393 finished

My machine is...
Athlon XP 1900+
512Mb RAM
GeForce 3 video
HDD free space 19Gb odd free on an 80Gb disk.

System not overclocked, all other projects on this machine are downloading fine, other than LHC, which is a known lack of work.

Can Anybody help?

There is a workaround for this <a href="http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=11887">here</a>. Should allow you to download enough work to keep you busy until CPDN get their files signed.
