61) Message boards : Number crunching : Unable to upload 2 zip files (Message 37189)
Posted 12 Jun 2009 by Helmer Bryd
Post:

Until now every time there's been a file upload problem the programmers in Oxford have solved the server disk space issue before the BOINC 14-day limit. We know that Milo is already doing everything he can. I am confident that he will succeed again.

Thanks, Mo.
The current situation is that there is apparently some money that I can spend, and I have a quote for a suitable server, but before I can send the order I require a signature on a form. When I will be able to get that is at present unknown. Usually, orders for servers take about a week once sent.

Unfortunately, switching uploads to other systems isn't a possibility at the moment as there isn't enough space anywhere.

Ideally I would like to have new servers in place before we run out of space, but managing to secure money in time to do so is very difficult.

OK, Oxford has their priorities, well, I have a lot of results to upload and going on a vacation now so I guess most of them will be lost, well well

The BBC forum had to be set up separately because the BBC insisted on having it. At some point it will be closed down, I\'d guess before the end of 2007. Then we\'ll be left with two main forums - this one and the php.

There is no way the php forum could be eliminated as it has so many advantages:

*allows access to email addresses

*allows private messaging

*the admins and mods can rearrange the sections and start new ones depending on what the project and members need

*allows search of memberlist

*has allowed creation of a hidden section for admins and moderators to discuss things

But it also has disadvantages:

*php attracts spammers

*you can\'t click on a poster\'s name and get to the person\'s workunits and results

*the php server isn\'t under the direct control of cpdn, at least at the moment - it\'s at the Open University in Milton Keynes, whereas cpdn is at Oxford Uni

*the php forum has twice been out of action for extended periods and all cpdn members needed to come to this forum to be able to post

The advantages show, I think, why the php forum must remain. The last two disadvantages show why this forum must also remain.

We all know that Carl, Tolu and Milo cannot possibly look at all the threads regularly and still do their job in Oxford. If we only had one forum, this would still be the case. The moderators know this and we make sure we visit all 3 main forums regularly; it will be easier for us when there are only two.

On all three forums there are lots of very knowledgeable and experienced members who also help. Every day and for years. The project doesn\'t just depend on admins and mods; there are large numbers of helpers. It\'s very useful if regular posters on this forum can also register on the php (preferably with the same name!) so that if we do ever need to contact a member privately, we can do so. And vice-versa, of course. To use the advantages of both forums is the most flexible solution.

I consider that ALL three main forums, which are what concern us here, are maintained properly.

No, I wasn\'t referring to the April flaw but the switch on a sulphur parameter in the 5.15 models compared to the 5.08 models that shows different output

Carl said some half year ago that implementing 40-year models would take about 2 weeks of full time work to do
I guess, and I guess this would be the same kind of software that can restore all the crashed models?

The 160 year model was just one option when the coupled model was ironed out
I think that was a mistake

A normal human beeing wants to finish a given task :)

Hm, I see a lot of posts have been deleted from this thread, including mine.

Another observation is that the moderators Les and mo.v are not running the project themselves, how can you answer peoples questions if you are not in the \"dirt\" yourself?

If the admins don\'t have the time to look into this forum then why not shut it down?

So moderator mo.v has deleted posts again?
To polish up a thread?

I have got enough and do not run this project anymore

So my earlier post was moderated out, what was wrong in that post?
You need to know that the Boinc credit system have been highly inflated by optimised clients depending on the benchmarking system.
Climate never had this problem thanks to Carl.

Might to add:
One model + 1 Einstein task shows 1.26 s/TS, so no slowdown there.

These 1.10-1.30 speeds people report are overclocked machines, and the beauty about this chip is that they are rather easy to overclock.

Mine E6600 @3.2 GHz is doing 1.32-1.35 with two models and the Linux client (which is a couple of % slower than Windows)
With one model it\'s around 1.25.
With one model + a GIMPS M32 LL test it\'s around 1.45, hmm...

Linux is better in handling memory and disks.
I had no problem when running SAP that uses 430 mb memory on a box with 512 mb memory installed.
No defrag required either

It seems like Debian Sarge doesn\'t work.
I have tried Red Hat 8.0, Fedora C2-3-4, Zenwalk and they work well.
77) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : error: meaning ? (Message 25261)
Posted 24 Nov 2006 by Helmer Bryd
Post:
Thanks Jim.

Reading more carefully the logs, I noticed that these messages appeared just after restarting the computer at the date 01/12/2056 and 01/12/2063.
Perhaps it is related with the yearly trickle files, but I can\'t tell exactly what\'s happened: perhaps the files were not properly closed when shutting down the computer.

Yeah, the files had already been used the first time and couldn\'t be found the second time after restarting.
This happened to me too but the model just happily chugged along :)
78) Message boards : Number crunching : Naughty Intel patch - has anybody tried it? (Message 25258)
Posted 24 Nov 2006 by Helmer Bryd
Post:
The coupled model is compiled with Intel Fortran 9 and there are no SSE optimisations anymore since they were not stable.
To check the speed you can take the time between the checkpoints in minutes*0.139, that gives the current s/TS.

Intel is a little bit faster now but not more than 3-5% according to Geophi.

This is a bit sad, I was thinking of moving to Slackware, a bit tired of Fedora.
Well they have a 2.6.x kernel in /extra, could you try that?

Does it work well with other (heavy) things?
It could be a memory problem since CPDN is very memory intensive.
First thing I would do is to up the voltage a bit on the memory sticks.
Test it with Memtest86+
