A couple of possibilities.

1) There was a bug in the CPDN BOINC code that was causing this issue for models downloaded after the public launch date of 26 August 2004 that was fixed on 3 September 2004 as per http://www.climateprediction.net/board/viewtopic.php?t=2296&start=45 this link.

The summary resolution is to scrap this model due to the bad code and start another (E.g. Reset, Detach).

2) There was an isolated bug for HP PC’s with HP specific software (E.g. ImageZone) causing issues as per http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=399 this link.

The summary resolution is to delete HP's software in Add or Remove Programs or remove them from memory in task manager.

Hi Si,

FWIW I’m running XP Pro SP2 and CPDN BOIN and CPDN Classic. I’m running Norton AV 2004. Every week for as long as I can remember my AV scans my entire HDD on Friday at 20:00, for ~30 minutes, with no impact, other than a degradation in performance for CPDN, whether BOINC or not. The performance impact is understandable, as the AV task is higher priority. However, this does not impact the processing of CPDN, which resumes normal service after the AV scan has finished. My BOINC settings mirror yours, with the exception of “Leave applications in memory while preempted?” which I have set as “no”. This is the only difference I can think of.

What AV software are you running? What version of BOINC are you running? What’s your Memory utilization when the AV software is running? It would be interesting to know what messages you get in the BOINC GUI Messages log when the AV tasks kicks in, for example, does your project status change (pre-empted, running, suspended). Presumably when you look at the BOINC GUI Work display your WU has a status of Preempted?

Not that I should comment but I once came across this http://www.cgam.nerc.ac.uk/um/doc/umug/html/index.htm Unified Model User Guide link regarding climate models. I suspect this User Guide is the forerunner of the CPDN HadSM3 climate models and specifically applies to HadCMn models, but I found it quite interesting in trying to figure out the architecture of HadSM3. It would seem that in this instance source is stored on the Cray at the Met office as per Section 3.1. Interestingly enough this reinforces the existence of Fortran plus C source code.

I’m presuming that HadSM3 is a natural progression from HadCMn, although I’m prepared to be shot down in flames. I don’t know and would welcome some input, but I feel such a document for HadSM3 would be welcome or in fact confirmation that this HadCMn document applies to HadSM3. Clearly there are many folks out there who are interested in this granularity of detail.

Hi Yeti,

Hmmmm, an interesting one. When I look at your “Computers belonging to Yeti” display I find the following:

<img src="http://cpdn.tuxie.org/mikeymoss/Yeti_Computers_BOINC_CPDN_View_20040816.jpg">

It looks like there are some duplicate entries in here to me? Maybe you can confirm?

You can certainly merge computers with other hosts (computers) or delete hosts. Maybe this is what you need to do? I think you need to reconcile what WU’s are associated with what hosts and allocate accordingly. Ideally for a 2 CPU (HT) box then allocate two WU’s, unless you want to time-share. It seems to me you know what you’re doing and maybe detach any surplus WU’s from CPDN/BOINC. What would be interesting is to see your projects and work screens from the BOINC GUI. Ultimately this should tell you if you’ve got too many projects/WU’s allocated.

AFAIK, if you’re set up to use two processors (as per HT/Dual) and so that is a setting of “2” in the “On multiprocessors, use at most” setting of Preferences -&gt; General @ http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/home.php (your user) then you should be OK to go. It seems to me you already have this setting enabled.

Additionally, try looking at these two threads and you may find some information of interest, where there seems to be some tips for running CPDN Classic and BOINC for your type of machine:

&gt; So, Nick, how do I change my sig to a cutesy black-on-yellow like yours,

&gt; re-logged-in, changed the colours in the appropriate area, hit Update, copied

&gt; pasted it in my preferences area, updated, posted another post, and there it

Hi Peter,

Not Nick, but Mick, well Mikey. Just go back to the http://www.boinc.mundayweb.com/cpdn/ web page and log-in and update the colours as you want them. I don’t think Nick has gone for one from the pull-down list from the Colour Scheme settings, so can’t help you with his colour settings, but all of the images are stored at the above web site, so presuming you’re logged in and you get the “Your colour scheme was successfully saved” message at the top of the screen, then you should be OK, the signature box should change in front of your very eyes!

Try looking at the http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~sykesm/cpview.html web page for CPView.

Additionally this http://www.climateprediction.net/board/viewtopic.php?t=2127 web page explains how to use the CPDN Classic version of CPView. Of course, this does not apply to the CPDN BOINC Beta!

&gt; Carl,
&gt;
&gt; I don't know how much it might apply to this situation...and whether the
&gt; Fortran compiler has such switches, but something of an interesting read, with
&gt; a link, on the Intel compiler and AMD64 here...
&gt;
&gt; http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=14077
&gt;
&gt; and here
&gt;
&gt; http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=13821
&gt;
&gt; Like I said, it may not apply, and even so there is a lot to read off the
&gt; first articles link
There looks like some great information from the google link off http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=14077; a snippet:

**** Snippet Start ****
I started mucking around with a dissassembly of the Intel-specific binary and found one particular call (proc_init_N) that appeared to be performing this check. As far as I can tell, this call is supposed to verify that the CPU supports SSE and SSE2 and it checks the CPUID to ensure that its an Intel processor. I wrote a quick utility which I call iccOut, to go through a binary that has been compiled with this Intel-only flag and remove that check.

Once I ran the binary that was compiled with the Intel-specific flag (-QxN) through iccOut, it was able to run on the FX51. Much to my surprise, it ran fine and did not miscompare. On top of that, it got the same 22% performance boost that I saw on the Pentium4 with an actual Intel processor. This is very interesting to me, since it appears that in fact no Intel-specific optimization has been done if the AMD processor is also capable to taking advantage of these same optimizations. If I'm missing something, I'd love for someone to point it out for me. From the way it looks right now, it appears that Intel is simply "cheating" to make their processors look better against competitor's processors.
**** Snippet End ****

This sounds quite promising, as ultimately Intel might be considered hardware as opposed to software gurus. If we could recreate what this guy did (detailed in the google link), which doesn’t seem to be that difficult, then this might significantly reduce the amount of work required for FORTRAN compilers. Easy to test I would imagine with a few of the AMD CPDN BOINC gurus.

I’m also perplexed as to the benchmark figures, is there a ~22% performance improvement for Intel Pentium 4 processors due to FORTRAN compilation efficiencies as stated above or not? Or is it a little more complicated than that, and we’re not comparing eggs with eggs? Presumably something like CPFarmView would compare eggs with eggs?

&gt; quite small, i think.&gt;
Hi gandhi,

Hmmm, OK there are 259,248 timesteps per phase, 3 phases per model and 45.008 years per model. So we can presume HAL9000 completed 3 models in 89.422 CPU days. There are 86,400 (60*60*24) CPU seconds in one day, so HAL9000 completed 3 models in ~7,726,060.8 CPU seconds. HAL9000 completed 3 models, 9 phases and therefore 2,333,232 timesteps. So, ~3.3 seconds per timestamp.

Clearly for BOINC like the rest of Pentium 4 users you are benefiting from the ~25-30% performance increase.

To save my fingers and my poor math maybe you could study the following links for other CPDN classic and BOINC performance figures:

Hey, on one hand it seems like a good idea to go to the main site and maybe learn a bit more about CPDN. Ultimately one would imagine when CPDN BOINC is public, then this would be the best URL. Those of us participating in the BOINC Beta know the URL of the associated and dedicated web site, which seems to be for BOINC only problems, suggestions and statistics.

A few more links regarding the Intel Fortran Compiler for Windows/Linux. There seems to be good advice for Pentium, of course, as most information comes from Intel! Somebody also asked about AMD processors back in May 2004, but no answer as of yet. It looks like that maybe optimal performance for all environments, whether software or hardware (I.E. Windows, Linux, Intel/AMD processors) might require some compilation tuning.

Of course AMD don’t really consider the Intel Fortran Compiler suite of software as “best” for their processors:
