1) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : BOINC/CPDN on FreeBSD/Linux emulation, undefined symbol? (Message 20377)

Post:
I tried to do this a while back, and posted a message here,
and the reply was something along the lines of the dataset
or structure of it is OS-specific, and there wasn\'t one in the
pipeline for freebsd.

It\'s a pity because some of us admin some very powerful servers
that are up 24/7, and a lot of these are likely to be running some
BSD variant. Given that FreeBSD is still a \'minority\' OS, I can see why
there\'s neither the time nor the impetus to make a BSD version.

The error you will be getting is something like

\"Message from server: platform \'i386-portbld-freebsd6.0\' not found\"

There are plenty of free fortran compilers in /usr/ports/lang.

Here\'s an online list:

Why would you have to use intel compiler?

HI,
AFAIK, no way around this.
CPDN models are compiled for Windows, Linux and Mac, but not for *BSD OS
And as the source code of the models is not available, you can\'t compile it yourself.

:( a pity. I admin some high-end servers, all running freebsd. Could a freebsd version be all that much different to the mac osx version?

(It\'s a pity because I tested a live cd of FreeBSD with KDE a few months ago and I was impressed by the simplicity and efficiency of this version: I thought BSD was for super-gurus running servers, etc, but newbies like me can also use it for every day stuff like email or browsing internet.)

been using freebsd since \'97. It\'s linux i can\'t understand! :)

I\'ve been trying the boinc CPDN compiled for linux but after passing the initial tests it just sits there waiting to download work. next step is to run it off knoppix (urgh!)

(A returning participant writes)

BOINC seems to be well supported under FreeBSD now. When I try to run it with CPDN I get the following error from the server:

2005-09-14 13:12:51 [climateprediction.net] Message from server: platform \'i386-portbld-freebsd5.3\' not found

which I presume means that the cpdn data/model hasn\'t been ported.

is there any way around this yet?

then it will stop, and after a short time, get another wu. I think it's down to the linux emulation. At this momen't, I'm looking for the best emulation, and I'll give it another try..

>
> That would be nice, it's running pretty quick I think with emulation also
> (2.86 is fast even without emulation! :-)

unfortunately, seems to crash and then run another WU. I'll run it again and post output....

> well DLT is just a "delta" I do of recent timestamps, pretty much to see that
> the model hasn't ground to a halt, i.e. timesteps are taking too long etc. I
> think I abandon a run if DLT gets more than 5 minutes per timestep (which
> would probably mean your earth is boiling hot or ultra-cold). Being 0.00 is a
> bit odd but as long as the timesteps are so fast at 2.53 that's OK.

excellent. I notice that it's not crashing now, like it did with the old version, and the DLT is now returning more normal numbers:

> if you were having troubles with Linux, simply "Reset" or "Detach" and then
> re-"Attach" to cp.net with your authenticator key, and then it should download
> the "4.04" files for Linux. Please let me know here if you have success with
> 4.04 that you didn't have with the 4.03 CPDN/BOINC Linux and we will continue
> to keep these builds.
>
>

Well, the model runs, so far, but after a few hundred steps the DLT thing goes to 0.00:

1zif_100113623 - PH 1 TS 000630 - 14/12/1810 03:00 - H:M:S=0000:26:37 AVG= 2.54 DLT= 0.00

seems to be running OK otherwise though. What does the DLT mean, and what would a 0.00 value signify?

Hi

Once you're a little more familiar with your system, you might want to try
CFLAGS="-O2 -march=athlon-xp -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe" in /etc/make.conf and rebuild your kernel (the -march=athlon-xp is athalon-xp-specific optimizations)

> I haven't even tried 4.06 yet so it may be wiser to stick with 4.05? It looks

ok cheers for that - now running 4.05

Hi

Made 4.06 from CVS, I get this error, after it\'s been running for a while:

00t4_400026033 - PH 1 TS 011346 - 27/07/1811 09:00 - H:M:S=0013:35:16 AVG= 4.31 DLT= 1.98

2004-08-31 16:23:03 [climateprediction.net] You may need to restart BOINC to finish this result

this is the 2nd time it has happened - should I restart it or abandon this one and continue with 4.05?

Hi

On various linux boxes, if viz is exited from, a message like the one below appears on the console:

0116_300026323 - PH 1 TS 120913 - 30/11/1817 00:30 - H:M:S=0078:55:50 AVG= 2.35 DLT= 1.00
CPDN Monitor got quit request...
Detaching shared memory...

..and there it stays. Is there a way to cleanly exit viz so the model remains running as it should?

The minimal requirements page link is at the bottom of the page that referenced this one:

350MB isn't enough space. The minimum is 600MB if I recall correctly.
