1) Message boards : Number crunching : Sulphur observations (Message 16100)

I\'m running a 2.8 PIV with 1GB of RAM, XP Home, and leave it on all day, too. Although I\'ve experienced a similar slowdown (2 seconds per time step to 3.25 or so), I haven\'t had the kinds of problems you\'re experiencing. I\'m running BOINC version 4.19, by the way--4.45 kept crashing, and 4.19 is running perfectly smoothly.

I had difficulties before when my version 4.45 started its first work unit with hadsm4.13, so I finally ended up reinstalling BOINC 4.19. Now, it works like a charm. I just did a work unit, and it was about 1.76 seconds per time step, which was great. That\'s about 5.3 hours per trickle, which, at 94.5 points per trickle, got me 17.83 credits per hour. It was done in just under 16 days.

It then downloaded a sulphur work unit and started in on that. I thought they added 1 extra 15-year cycle, so they should be 1/3 longer, or about 21 days. Well, after 7.5 hours, it\'s only 0.65% done, moving at 3.21 seconds per time step. It says it has five sets of 15 years instead of the previous 3 (?). So the work unit is going to take almost 10 hours per trickle and 48 days total?! That\'s three *times* as long, not 1 1/3 times as long, and the trickles take almost twice as long.

So, am I going to get the same 94.5 points credit for twice as much computation, or does the sulphur cycle grant more credit? I\'m all about the science, but if it isn\'t doing more science--but is just taking longer--I see no reason to do a sulphur unit instead of a faster, older unit. If it *is* doing more crunching, it should grant more credit, right?

Anyone know?
4) Message boards : Number crunching : Possible hadsm4.13 question. (Message 15317)

Well, after days of that crashing every time, I tried something new. I deleted BOINC (4.72) completely. I then installed BOINC 4.19. It downloaded a CPDN work unit, started up using hadsm4.13, and has been zooming happily along ever since.

Explain *that*.

It still crashes every time. Now I can't run CPDN at all, I guess. :-( I guess I'll concentrate on SETI and the others until they come out with a newer version of BOINC.

&gt; Because..........some people have spent quite a lot of time getting round this
&gt; -5 error. As in your case this is probably just a temporary problem, it
&gt; wouldn't be worthwhile to spend time on it.

Hi. I am having the -5 error now that I'm using hadsm4.13. I even upgraded to BOINC 4.72, but every time, it crashes *instantly* after downloading the work unit. Even when the computer is doing nothing else. Even though I've been crunching for CPDN since way back into the beta stage and I've almost never had a crash, yet I've had four crashes in three days since it upgraded itself to 4.13. What to do? Your comment above leads me to think there is a fix. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I did a project reset. It just downloaded a new work unit a little bit ago (after midnight GMT?) and crashed. So, I guess tomorrow morning I'll install version 4.72 and see if that works. Wish me luck. :-(

8) Message boards : Number crunching : Possible hadsm4.13 question. (Message 15051)

Hi, everybody. I've been cruching for a long time and have never had any problems. When I finished my last work unit, that made five perfectly completed runs out of six--one crashed halfway through when I was running an extremely intensive other program at the same time. All those had used hadsm4.12 and earlier. When I went to get a new work unit today, it downloaded it and started work with hadsm4.13--and *immediately* crashed. One minute later, it automatically downloaded another work unit and immediately crashed again. When I look at the work unit, it says this:

4.45
- exit code -1073741819 (0xc0000005)

What's the deal? I can't get another work unit because it says I've exceeded my 2/day limit (I never imagined I'd ask for 2 in a day, let alone 3!). Now, I'm afraid it'll happen again tomorrow. Is this a 4.13 issue or something else? What should I do? Thanks in advance.

&gt; Michael;
&gt; 1.how many credits did you lose or gain?

None, as far as I can tell.

&gt; 2.Have you ever used the merge computers facilty?

Yes.

&gt; 3.As far as I am concerned, ALL my credits were correctly gained!!! I DID do
&gt; the work for the 138,000 credits and it has now been taken off me.

Then tell them about the results that are missing. I have archived every result I've done, including back to pre-BOINC days.

Post:
&gt; As I pointed out in my original message, it is important to get the database
&gt; right but why not just work on getting FUTURE credits right, instead of
&gt; see-sawing up and down to gain 6,000 one day and lose 84,000 the next.

Presumably because they would like all credits right instead of just future ones. Also, in your zeal to hold on to credits you, yourself, acknowledge not to have been fairly earned, you are completely forgetting all the people who were not beneficiaries of such mistakes. They're just ensuring a fair playing field, and I see no reason why they shouldn't fix obvious problems merely because they happened before today. As Carl said, if you have actual results for which you are not receiving credit, mention it to him. Absent that, it's hard to get too worked up over your plight.

&gt; I find it extrodinary that I could have been the benficiary of 84,000 false
&gt; credits out of a total of 138,000. I have dedicated six machines to CPDN for
&gt; close to 12 months and the idea that that only produces 54,000 credits seems
&gt; hard to beleive. ther minimum spec is an AMD 1800+ with the top machine
&gt; AMD3000+ 64bit.

I glanced at your machines, and you've done very little work with them per machine. (I have almost as many credits as your total with *one* computer. and it was off for months when I moved.) When you say you "dedicated six machines for 12 months", including an AMD 3000+ 64 bit, that leaves a different impression in most people's minds than what is listed. That AMD 64 bit hasn't returned a single work unit (although it's progressing on one) even though it's been signed up for over 7 months. It has only produced 53 trickles. The others seem similar. Again, if you're missing results, tell Carl.

&gt; I urge you to look again at this issue with a regard to a FAIRER resolution to
&gt; database issues. Why not roll back to yesterdays situation and ensure the
&gt; database works correctly from here on????

Because people who *did* do the work for all their credits would like to compete on an even playing field. Enjoy your 54,000 credits. That's a lot!

&gt; I cannot believe it :D
&gt; Now the credit is granted... Strange, someone obviously is reading this ;)
&gt; greetz, Uli<br /><br /><img border="0"> src="http://boinc.mundayweb.com/one/stats.php?userID=501" /&gt;<br />

I always operate under the assumption that CPDN doesn't actually "have" my trickle until they update the next time. Given that, it's possible it could be almost 24 hours before credit is granted, assuming that script (or whatever) is run every 12 hours. I don't start worrying until a day has passed--and that has happened enough for me not to worry at *all* over 1-12 hours. I've received a huge amount of back credit for all the stuff during the last outage, so I'm happy.

By the way, what do you type to get that listing of your stats at the end of your post? I can't do it!

Thanks, Carl. My stats were updated when I got up this morning, and they were updated again when I just looked (it's afternoon now). I've gotten about 5,000 credits in the last couple days thanks to the wait. Woohoo! Up to 5,000th or so in the rankings. :-)

By the way, does anyone know how to append the BOINC status listing to a post? I asked once and was given a suggestion to check a website--which no longer contained the desired information. Each time I try a guess of what it might be, it doesn't work. Thanks.

I had trouble fetching whatever those things were for a while. It's fixed as of 8 hours ago or so when I checked it. I don't know if it has anything to do with Windows XP.

I now have all 10 of my missing trickles from June 14-19 on there. I suspended CPDN after them because the next trickle was the 24th, and if they were "losing" them, I didn't want to lose that one. I've already received the numerical credit for the first 5 (they arrived first). I bet the credit for the remaining five will appear in the next couple hours. Good job, guys. :-)
18) Message boards : Number crunching : How does one find one\'s ranking? (Message 11804)
Posted 13 Apr 2005 by old_user7538
Post:
Hi, all. I've been crunching for years, but since the switch to BOINC, I have no way of knowing what "rank" I'm at. When you guys post messages, it lists all your ranks on your BOINC projects, which is neat. Where does one go to find rankings? It doesn't seem to be listed on the user main page, and I haven't found a link to it. Also, how does one include all that info in the .sig? Thanks in advance, and keep crunching.
