1) Questions and Answers : Windows : "Communication deferred" for a month! (Message 45453)

Post:
Ok... the server status page says there are 0 WUs ready to send, which would explain why I also keep getting deferred.

So, the more interesting question is when should we expect more work to become available?
2) Questions and Answers : Windows : Why are completed runs still stored on my hard disk? (Message 12865)

I have come to format my computer, and noticed that BOINC is occupying 2gb of hard drive space, most of which is contained in several folders within the /projects/ directory. To me, it looks like it has retained all the information from previous runs that I have completed. I have a folder with my current run, and then several older folders, which each contain a set of 360 zipped .nc files.

If these folders with 300mb of zips are from old projects, why doesn't BOINC delete this info once it has been submitted to the server? Would I cause myself (or the project) any harm if I deleted them myself to save a bit of space?

Thanks for any assistance :)

That isn't the experience I've just had sadly. I had to physically reboot after a Windows app locked everything up, and afterwards CPDN has kindly rewound my model to timestep 0. Quite annoying as I was on the 3rd phase after 500 hours.

This was running version 4.05, so I'm not sure if the particular problem has cleared up since then, but I think stability is still the most sorely lacking feature with BOINC and large work units such as CPDN

> It should only rewind to the last checkpoint which occur every 144 timesteps

> 18, 21, 24, 27, and 30 of every month.

Looking at the failed WU's online they both ended with an error code of -5.

I have run into the same problem again, this time after 70 hours of processing. BOINC had trouble closing when I shut my computer down last (the end process dialogue briefly showed up). Now I boot it up again, BOINC tells me the WU is completed and ready to send.

I have read that BOINC is very touchy about overclocking, this time my system has been running with a 10% overclocked bus (184mhz) - although this isn't enough to cause hadsm to crash (185mhz gives a crash within seconds unless I feed the cpu more voltage). I'm not convinced this is the source of the problem, as the first time I had this problem my system wasn't overclocked at all.

Is there any way I can get more info from my system as to why it breaks, and ideally any way to stop it happening :) As an aside, is there any way of saving the 'state' of a clients model, I had thought maybe creating a backup/restore point after every 24hrs of processing could be handy for situations like this, although would it require an extra 400mb of drive space to store the info?

6) Questions and Answers : Getting started : Building BOINC / CPDN for 64 bit OS? (Message 1319)
Posted 20 Aug 2004 by Profile The Rodney Dangerfield of Commissioners
Post:
A couple of friends and I are building a dual Opteron server that won\'t have any immediate usage, so I figured we could set it to work on CPDN for a couple of months while it\'s up but not doing much. I\'m a little confused about how we would go about getting a custom version to take advantage of the 64 bit architecture.

Downloading a nightly snapshot of the BOINC source from after August 5th should give us an optimally compiled version of BOINC, but what can I do about the hadsm model? On my current Windows system BOINC just downloads the hadsm exe\'s by itself - would BOINC on this server download some Linux executables, or the source to hadsm to be compiled?

Sorry if this is outlined on one of the sites, I had a read around last night but couldn\'t make head nor tail of it :o)

I start up my computer this afternoon and BOINC decided that my work unit had ended and began uploading the result. This can\'t be accurate as it was around 10% completed after 50 hours of processing time.

What confuses me is there are no error warnings in the message window, BOINC simply started up and began uploading results as far as I can tell. I don\'t remember a specific problem when shutting down last night, there is a possibility BOINC had to be forcibly shutdown by Windows as that happens occasionally.

In the directory of the old workunit I find an xml file which doesn\'t make much sense to me, and a \"restart.day.zip\" file. The WU\'s id was 02be_100027987. Is this of any use?

8) Questions and Answers : Preferences : tags not working in profile? (Message 925)

Aah yes, writing [a href=http://url]text[/a] works, although if you come to edit your profile again you need to strip out the "s to stop it from gobbling up your links next time around!

I've tested this over at SETI's page and the same thing happens, are you in direct contact to pass this info on, or should I post in their forums? :o)

9) Questions and Answers : Preferences : tags not working in profile? (Message 880)

I seem to be having trouble with my profile (try clicking it). I put a couple of links to my website in there, but they revert to empty [a] tags once I've submitted.

I've stuck the links in brackets after where the tags should be, and you can test by clicking on the text before them, it turns blue when you click but goes nowhere.

When I come to edit my profile again I see for example

[a]amazing band[/a] (with angly brackets) rather than the [a href="http://blah"]amazing band[/a] that I typed in..

Other people can get this to work, so what is going (or I am doing) wrong?

ps. I noticed in editing this post that the same happens to me within posts... although my signature (which I set last week) works?
10) Questions and Answers : Windows : Restart required to update free disk space (Message 697)
Posted 11 Aug 2004 by Profile The Rodney Dangerfield of Commissioners
Post:
Actually no, I didn't update my preferecnes at all - I had set them while I was downloading the client (use no more than 100gb, leave 0.1gb free, use no more than 99% total). I don't think it could of been a matter of BOINC not downloading my updated preferences as they hadn't changed, just that it wasn't checking the free disk space each time?

When I first installed the 4.02 client this morning, my older computer didn't have enough free space to run the model. I tidied up the drive and freed about a gig of space, and so told BOINC to update (retry now), but the scheduler responded that I still didn't have enough disk space.

When I restarted BOINC and told it to update again, my downloads started and the model began to run. I'm guessing the problem is that free disk space is only checked on startup?
