21) Message boards : Number crunching : FAMOUS SUCCESS/FAILURE RATIO (Message 41505)
Posted 19 Jan 2011 by dajashby
Post:
I have a Macbook Air (1114220) that's been crunching since the middle of December. It's received nothing but FAMOUS models, and has completed 6 successfully out of 48 downloaded. I haven't checked them all, but the ones I have looked at state "INVALID THETA DETECTED". My impression from a search of the boards is that Famous models are reasonably prone to fail, but the percentage on this machine seems way too high. My question is, is there a way to conveniently exclude this machine from receiving Famous models, and if there is, should I do so? Of the 6 PCs I have on the project, this one is far and away the most "productive", when measured by credits received - over the last 5 days it's averaged 2,308.42 credits (1,154.21 per CPU core). My 2 Quad core Windows machines averaged 550 and 599 per core over the same period. The other two Core2 Duo machines (both Windows boxes) managed slightly less.

I check progress usually once a day. Since yesterday I seem to have lost about 1.5 million credits. Mind you, I've actually gone up in the participants table from 117 to 110! ID is 7304

Well, as I said, it\'s a PowerPC Mac Mini, not an Intel. Any possibility of compiling an executable from source? I mean the climate model executable, rather than BOINC, which is available for Gentoo on the PowerPC, as far as I am aware. Probably not, I guess - I can imagine that the people that process the data might be a bit paranoid about something like that...

I\'ve got a PowerPC Mac Mini that I\'m thinking of installing a version of linux on. Does anyone know if I can compile BOINC and CPDN to run on, say, Gentoo PPC linux? I used gentoo for a year or so on X86 going back a few years and I\'m aware that it uses the download and compile model for most software. Are there gentoo packages available for cpdn models - there does appear to be one for boinc itself?

I get this message when I type \"./run_client\" in a newly opened terminal window after I have restarted the computer. The System Monitor shows no instance of any BOINC software running. I have just restored the boinc directory from a backup I had on a DVD.

I\'ve got a PC that\'s running Windows XP as a VMWare client, and I concluded that I needed to get cpdn to suspend when I was doing anything else. I set up the preferences accordingly, and quite often the system works ok. At the moment, however, when I start up boinc it goes straight into Activities Suspended mode, and will only run if I fire up boincmgr and tell the model to run all the time. This has happened once before a week or so ago when the website was down, but that doesn\'t seem to be the case on this occasion. I\'m running boinc 5.2.13 on Ubuntu Linux 5.10. The PC is a dual core AMD Athlon 64. I checked when the model reported Activities Suspended, and the CPU load on each core was around 2%.

Hi, I\'ve been upgrading the BOINC server software so that there may have been problems with web pages. If there are still problems please let me know (I think it\'s all done but there could be something I missed!)

I had the same problem yesterday. Today the error message has disappeared, but the trickle information hasn\'t reappeared.

...and the list of computers in \"Your Computers\" is in no order. I used to be able to reorder it by clicking on the headings, but that has stopped working...

The couple of times it's happened to me have been a week or so apart, and I've rebooted between them. Don't know if rebooting as such does anything, except restart the application. I've just manually run the benchmarking process, and the same thing happened - it failed, and the models didn't resume. I then suspended activity, and resumed activity, and that started the models going again. It might be interesting to do this repeatedly and see if the program clags up completely, but I'm not planning to do that,,,

I'ver had this problem a couple of times, since I upgraded BOINC to run the sulphur model. I've just exited from BOINC and restarted, and it seems to have reliably come good each time. Very annoying, though! Only happens on my Windows machine.

What was that someone said about speaking too soon? I now seem to have lost that 20,000 in credits again from 199807, and this time it's disappeared from my hostid stats as well. (Well, at least this time it's consistant!). However, 11065 has now zoomed back up to 75 on the table, and my hostid has retained its improved position, so everybody else must have lost a lot of points as well. I can live with that.

I'm trying to get MySQL up and running on my home network and am having very little success. I'm thinking of giving Firebird a go...

Carl,

Well, in my case that was the correct machine to use. Now 199807 has its credits back. As a result of all the machinations my best performed machine has now dropped back to 143! (It is being hit by running the sulphur model as well as the standard model...) Still, my user account has gone up from 300 to 288.

Thanks for all the crunching.

I have a similar problem. I recently merged a machine due to a problem I experienced after trying to recover a crashed model and upgrading to the new version of BOINC. My "new" machine (199807) has now lost all the credits from the previous one (73339) - about 20,000, although my user account still seems to have them. On the other hand my "best" machine has suddenly zoomed from 116 to 77 on the Top Computers ladder, so I suppose I shouldn't complain too much!

&gt; +1 for DaveN
&gt;
&gt; Boinc and BOIncmanager are 2 different softwares: You have to start boinc (cd
&gt; ~/BOINC and ./boinc) and then start the boincmanager: the manager tries to
&gt; connect to boinc on the localhost.
&gt;
&gt; You can also read <a> href="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=2672#13147"&gt;this</a>
&gt; thread for more info for newbies (sorry, I don't know if you're a newbie :o))
&gt;
Well, newbie is a relative term I suppose. No offence taken. I guess I just assumed that the linux boincmgr was the equivalent of the Windows program that looks exactly the same. It's nice to see that I'm not Robinson Crusoe in this belief. My message to the authors of the software would be (1) their "Connection refused" dialog could be improved to say something like "Dolt! Start the command line client before running the GUI!" (2) maybe they could improve the run_client script to prompt to run the boincmgr program after starting the client. If I knew squat about linux scripting I could probably run something up along those lines (memo to self: this could be a beginner's python project...)

I have now installed boinc 4.43 on two linux boxes. Both are PIIIs. One is running gentoo linux, and the other has ubuntu, both the latest builds, and both have 2.6 series kernels. The gentoo box has KDE 3.4 installed, the ubuntu box has Gnome. In both cases when I run the boinc manager gui client it starts by popping up a box that says \"Connection failed\", and when I open one of the pull down menus my X session has been known to stop working. I can use shortcut keys to go to a console prompt, and kill X, but that\'s about all. On other occasions I have been able to quit. When I try running from a terminal session I get 2 Connection refused\" messages. Then it says \"Failed with error 2\", there are two calls to get_socket_error() that appear to return 111, and then it says that it has tried both ports and it\'s giving up.

Neither linux box is running a firewall as far as I am aware. My broadband router has a firewall (which I don\'t really know how to modify the configuration of - cringe with shame), but both the command line client, and the Windows boinc manager seem to be able to cope with the same situation.

In general I\'m quite happy running the command line client, but I\'d like to know what might be going on with the manager. Does it only work with Red Hat, or something?

Yeah, that explained things really clearly. I'm actually running the Sulphur model beta as well as standard CPDN on my P4 Windows box. I think I almost understand what's going on.

&gt; I wouldn't worry too much. It will settle down when it's been running for a
&gt; bit.

Les, I'll take your word for it.

Les,

Thanks again. I backed up the old models to cd, backed up the newly downloaded model to a safe place, and restored my backup of the crashed one. I have to redo about 100,000 timesteps, which is about a week on this PIII. Still, I think this is better than losing the whole model. At the same time I installed the 4.43 boinc client, and it is telling me that the computer is "overcommitted", followed by "nearly overcommitted". I saw a post on the forums to the effect that this is due to the client miscalculating time to completion, but is only a problem if you run multiple projects. Like you, I only run CPDN. Is this a problem, I wonder?

Les,

Thanks for the advice. As luck would have it, I do have a backup of the folder on that machine - it's nearly two weeks old, but that's better than nothing, I guess. (I recently switched Linux distros on the computer, which is why I have the backup.)

It occurs to me to wonder exactly what I need to backup to capture the current state of my climate prediction project, if I were to do this on a regular basis? I mean, I have 5 computers running boinc, amounting to gigabytes on gigabytes of data...

Do I have to retype this, or can you work it out?

core_client_version - 4.13
message - process got signal 11

active_task_state - 3
signal - 11

Bloody computers, I hate them...
