1) Questions and Answers : Windows : BOINC misconfigured? (Message 55813)

Thanks for that, Les.

That error doesn't explain the others I crashed.

Is there now a fix for this problem?

Thanks

I've just crashed out several work units. I had a message saying that hadcm3s_something had crashed, and that Windows could look for a solution. I have not run any recent updates.

It was running fine until a few minutes ago. This is a new error.

I have suspended CPDN activity until I know how to fix this.

Any ideas what's wrong and how to fix it?

Thanks.

I just crashed two units with the repeated message:
07/06/2015 15:20:12 | climateprediction.net | Task hadam3p_anz_n16p_2007_1_009858125_0 exited with a DLL initialization error.

Any idea on causes and, more importantly, a fix?

Thanks

Okay, Thanks for that, everyone. I've just completed four hadcm3s units, and think it's probably fixed.

I did virus and hardware scans, both of which turned up clean.

Geophi was correct to suspect the BOINC update didn't install properly. I downloaded and installed the software again. This made it run, but very slowly.

I had another look at the settings. Under Computing preferences-Processor usage-other options I changed the settings to allow it to use 100% of the processors and 100% of the CPU time, NOT 0% (no restriction): this seems to do two different things, even though it looks like it shouldn't.

The timings on the units then reset to zero, and I thought I was about to lose the next set of work units.

The system is running quite warm, and I'm having to watch the heat, which is fine in my den in March, but may not be come July. I may have to tell it to leave one processor alone, just to keep the heat down.

Anyway, it works again. Thanks again.

Now I'm getting really frustrated.

I did these things (well, I checked the settings, which were set to the recommended ones some time ago, and then reset the project.

Now I'm getting:
Task hadam3p_afr_uag9_2013_1_009442494_1 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file

This isn't funny. Any thoughts?

Just had the same error with 4 hadam3p_pnw_wjXX_2008 series. I think this is starting to look like my problem again:

Task hadam3p_pnw_wjqa_2008_1_009705531_0 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file

Do I reset the project?

I've had to suspend computation here due to a series of errors.

Yesterday BOINC crashed for an unknown reason, twice in the space of a couple of hours. Computation errors on two hadcm3s units followed within a few minutes.

Suspecting BOINC was faulty, I suspended work and updated the BOINC software to the latest version. Due to download errors in the installation software, I was unable to download the new virtualbox software, and just updated BOINC.

I then restarted. Two more hadcm3s units began looping their calculations, advancing for about ten seconds before restarting at the previous position. After ten or fifteen minutes of this I aborted computation on these units.

Two more hadcm3s units then exhibited the same behaviour, starting from the beginning, then giving error:
Task hadcm3s_8gne_2002_2_009680232_0 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file before crashing.

Two hadam3p_eu units completed overnight and are ready to report, but I have four hadcm3s units on the system that I suspect I'm going to crash unless I fix the bug.

I've had a good completion record for several weeks before this, so it's a new problem.

Please advise.

EDIT: I know that this kind of error can be caused by interference from other software, such as antivirus. BOINC has been excluded from antivirus for some time.

So can we expect to see a pile of model runs addressing the Cyclone Pam question?

The people of Vanuatu came out top on an index of environmental impact and wellbeing http://www.theguardian.com/world/2006/jul/12/healthandwellbeing.lifeandhealth (the UK didn't make the top hundred), and I agree with Professor Allen that they deserve an answer.

In theory I think I might be able to get on a bus tomorrow morning and make it to Dublin for tomorrow evening, but I doubt it will happen.

Would it be possible to put the video and/or text (preferably) of his lecture online, please?

It would mean considerably less in the way of GHG emissions.

The BBC web site will often block people from outside the UK from using iPlayer, although I don't know whether it's the whole site or just some programmes. I've had the same problem getting at material on BBC America (where it might be).

They also tend to frown on using a VPN or a proxy, and may be joining the bandwagon of those blocking people using such technology from using the site. I suspect all this will do is drive many people into the hands of illegal torrent sites, but I obviously have no idea whether or not this programme might be found on one, because obviously you really shouldn't go using that sort of thing.

So, in answer to Jim's question, I suspect the answer is probably not, at least not legally, even if it's possible technically.

13) Questions and Answers : Windows : why does my anti-virus program think "hadam3p_afr_7.22_windows_intelx86.exe" is malware? (Message 51332)
Posted 27 Jan 2015 by Niall
Post:
Avast informs me that this false positive will be corrected in the next update. The Gods in the machine have otherwise, to date, been sending me non-afr work units.

In the interim, I have overcome the problem by:
* Excluding BOINC from scans
* Excluding the CPDN download servers from scans

I also temporarily suspended the anti-virus functions and retried the download. The file is now sitting on my computer. Whether it's allowed to run remains to be seen.

EDIT: I suspended everything else and tried starting the afr work unit. Avast decided to block it. Sadly, this was the third iteration of this work unit (hadam3p_afr_raey_2013_1_009440447), so it now won't be done. Miffed.

I have updated my preferences to avoid downloading any more until Avast gets this fixed.

I don't know, Richard. How do I find out?

Either look - DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING - inside client_state.xml for the upload urls.

Or enable http_debug logging, to display the sort of event log messages I posted.

From what I can see, these zips seem to be being sent to http://rapid-watch.badc.rl.ac.uk/cpdn_cgi/file_upload_handler, so I take that as a yes.

I imagine this will be fixed at the same time as the hadcm3s bug is fixed, then.

Is that heading towards the same 'rapid-watch.badc' server as the cm3s uploads?

I don't know, Richard. How do I find out?

NB: Now getting "connect () failed" error.

hadam3p_anz zip uploaded normally.
