1) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : Lots of tasks end with "Error While Computing". Is there a problem at my end? (Message 49666)

The case came with 4 fans: 1 front, 1 rear, and 2 on the side. There is room for 1 more large fan, on the bottom.

The case allows me to wire the front and rear fans to the case instead of the motherboard. This would give me the ability to run the fans at higher speeds, by manually setting switches. But, if I did that, the motherboard would think the fans were missing and sound an alarm.

Off topic:

I know someone who had the Steam installation of the game Riven (sequel to Myst) on Windows 7. He had a problem with the game halting or freezing. After searching the Internet, he fixed it by using an "affinity" feature in Windows that allowed him to limit the game to using a specific CPU core. It didn't matter which core it was.

I wonder if CDPN would run better on operating systems that have this feature if a feature were to be added to BOINC that limited each running task to a specific CPU?

I shouldn't have to underclock: The CPU is supposed to "throttle back" when it gets too hot. I had previously allowed BOINC to use at most 100% of the cores. I changed it to use at most 50%. I don't see any significant change in temperature.

A Internet search suggested some people have this problem because they didn't remove a protective strip of plastic on the thermal compound when installing the heat sink and fan. I took off the heat sink and fan; it looks like it was properly installed. There wasn't much dust inside the case.

I might mention that the temperature I see reported isn't always accurate. When I am not running BOINC, the CPU temperature ranges from 9 degrees C to 30 degrees. This violates the laws of physics: Without refrigeration, the CPU temp cannot be lower than the room temp.

That my CPU runs hot is why I lowered the maximum CPU use of BOINC to 90% and then 85% last month. In cooler seasons, I let BOINC use 100% of my CPU. Even allowing BOINC 100% of my CPU, I still had a lot of work units end with "Error While Computing." So, my CPU running hot is a side issue.

From what was posted here before I mentioned the temperature issue, Lacking any suggestions about making a software or hardware fix, other than those related to CPU temperature, I have to conclude that the problem seems to be the result of my not running my computer 24/7.

I'll detach from the project when the current work unit finishes. Even if I resolve the cooling issue, I won't be running my computer 24/7.

I do have that option, I didn't notice it "yesterday" when I looked. I have always had it set to zero.

I'm going to put CDPN on "no new tasks" until I can look at my computer's temperature issues. If I get it fixed, it might not be for several months. If I don't get it fixed, I'll detach from the project. I'll let the remaining work unit run when I have the computer on at night.

I don't have an exact option "Suspend work if CPU usage is above". I did recently change the option "Use at most ___ % of CPU time" to 85%. My CPU tends to run hot when I'm running BOINC. As Spring was ending, it was getting warm in this room. It is poorly insulated and has lots of glass, so there was some danger of my computer overheating. So, I set it to 90% and then to 85%.

Most of my CDPN tasks ended with "Error While Computing." I'm wondering if this is the fault of something on my computer, or if I am doing or did something wrong.

I don't run my computer 24/7. I start it up and shut it down about twice a day. I try to protect my BOINC work units by suspending projects before I shut down, and resuming them after I boot my computer.

I understand some work units will end with "Error While Computing", but I noticed the most probable time for a work unit to end in this state is just after I resume CDPN.

I did abort it. I suspect it could be a result of some sort of corruption on my computer: The same thing later happened to two World Community Grid tasks.

(I don't remember which WCG project was involved with the first one. The current one is the Clean Energy Project.)

When I first started suspecting something was wrong, the estimated time time to completion would be around 214 hrs. One time it increased to 225 hrs.

Now, when I suspend it and resume it, it always restarts with 212:01 elapsed with 214:37 estimated remaining. But, the progress doesn't change from 49.930% as it runs.

One of the Work units computes. The elapsed time progresses but the remaining time does'nt move and the percentage done stays blocked at 50,104%....

This sounds like one of the ways these models crash at or around the times the zip files are created. Look at the graphics and see if the model is stuck in a loop. You will probably need to abort it.

I have the same or similar problem with one of my work units. It is stuck at 49.930%. But, graphics for CDPN work units have never worked on this machine.

The statistics show average for CDPN is dropping, and total has flat-lined, while statistics for the other two BOINC projects show increases.

I have "No new work units" selected for all projects, since I want to install a new version of my O/S soon. O/S is Ubuntu with KDE.

Thanks for the replies.

I started using the BOINC manager to suspend projects (Seti@home and World Community Grid) prior to shutting down my computer about the time I joined CPDN, but before I received my first CDPN work unit. This was the result of some sort of bug in my operating system: When I booted my computer, it would start showing UTC time, instead of Chicago time. It would claim either the UTC time was "Local" time or Chicago time. I noticed that changing the time would confuse some of the software, including the BOINC projects, so I had to reboot after changing the time, hoping the time would be correct on the next boot. I would try to protect BOINC projects from this by suspending projects, and not resuming them until I verified I did not have to change the time.

* Ed: I'd recommend an extra one you don't need to carry around a lot--CPDN tasks are prone to crashing with a lot of shutdown cycles.

Will it reduce the number of CDPN crashes if I use the BOINC manager to select all projects and suspend them before I shut down my computer?

When joined CDPN, I saw something about the carbon footprint from running the project was small compared to the benefit. So, I planned on leaving my computer on mostly 24/7. (I would shut it down during thunder-storms or hot weather.) However, my electric bill was very small, and running my computer 24/7 has doubled it.
