1) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : 64 bit processor (Message 26169)

With 2 programmers, whose time is booked out for months ahead, the project will likely go with the 50,000 32 bit machines.

And the new core 2 processors are running very fast on 32 bits, as well as the new Intel Macs, which are even faster.

You want to argue or crunch?

I crunch 24/7. Just a shame that there are only 2 programmers on a job like this. All honour to them. I crunch because it is important work, and I would like to take it to the maximum. They run very fast, but we talk about running even faster, yes?

And we are not talking about just 50000 machines, as BOINC now is used for several projects, yes?

Even if I am a man, I can actually both do work and strive for improvement.

It\'s been the same for two years now with everything 64 bit. So few got them, someone say. bah.

Some quote that on the model a 64 bit version has been used an increase of up to 30% in processing time can be achieved. OK - if just 1000 of those running a BOINC has got 64 bit machines, this counts for about 300 extra machines to do the same math? Are there a 1000 64 bit machines doing BOINC? A resounding YES. 10000? Yes.

Not worth the hassle? How many model years you say?

OK, if not those arguments get you: With 30% less powerconsumption on the same workload, this climate project would actually strive to be environmentally friendly as well?
