Einstein@home was requiring explicit user consent to continue exporting so I'm checking other projects just in case.

(Message 58720) Posted 6 Sep 2018 by zaphod80013 Post: Don't know if this expected, an artifact of the cleanup, or a bug in the recovery process but I notice I have 18 completed tasks, all in March this year with run times ranging from 300k 1,275k seconds and no credits. I also noticed I have a task from 2013 that showing as "in progress" which isn't. Not complaining, just wanted to bring this to folks attention just in case it's indicative of a bug in the recovery operation.

(Message 58718) Posted 6 Sep 2018 by zaphod80013 Post: Whoo, some credits showed up in BAM today, about equal to the negative credit hit I took from the project a few of months back and doesn't appear to account for work since the system came back online so if my math is anywhere near correct I'm probably down between 100k & 200k credits but on the bright side even if we're not out of the woods yet at least the trees are thinning out. 4) Message boards : Number crunching : Nearly there (Message 58339) Posted 6 Jul 2018 by zaphod80013 Post: With raid 1 or 10 (mirror + stripe) the recovery only has to read a single drive to recover, with raid 5 or 6 it has to read all remaining drives to recover, taking my case of 8 x 4TB with raid 10 I only get 16TB total space but to recover a disk only need to read 4TB. With raid 5 I'd get 28TB storage but would need to read 28TB to recover (not 100% sure but believe thats the same for raid 6 although the capacity would be lower at 24TB) This significantly increases the recovery time and therefore the risk window for loss of service. While I'll accept that raid 6 may be better than raid 10 in terms of data loss risk (by about 2 orders of magnitude) that is not the only factor to consider, raid is primarily about continuity of service, not data loss, that's what backups are for. With raid 6 there is a significant write performance penalty (x6 vs x4 for raid 5 & x2 for raid 10) I use my Synology NAS mostly for local backup for the laptops & desktop in the house (I've 2 adult kids still living at home, which adds up to a lot of hardware) so, for us (and this is a pure judgment call), this is 'secondary storage', write performance & recovery time have greater significance than data loss & capacity. While I could be wide of the mark, your comment suggest to me a possible confusion regarding the purpose of raid & backup.
5) Message boards : Number crunching : Nearly there (Message 58315) Posted 30 Jun 2018 by zaphod80013 Post: I started as a computer operator in 1979, so I too remember punch cards, 12" tape & 14" disk (when I started, on ICL 2900 series kit, they were a whole 60Mb each, yes thats Mb not Gb) Funny my NAS had a HD fail about 3 wks ago, fortunately I run Raid 1-0, O.K. I loose 50% capacity but in principle I can survive 4 of the 8 disks failing provided they're all in different raid 1 pairs. I replace the failed drive & ordered a couple of spares.
6) Message boards : Number crunching : Nearly there (Message 58312) Posted 30 Jun 2018 by zaphod80013 Post: Thanks for the insight; I knew there were issues but not the nature of them, this kind of problem sucks. I know, first hand, from back in the days when I was a computer operator (remember them?) we had a tape deck that had bad internal memory, it was silently corrupting anything written on it for about 4 months, worst of all the corruption was calculated into the checksum so everything looked fine until we had to do a restore.
7) Message boards : Number crunching : Nearly there (Message 58302) Posted 29 Jun 2018 by zaphod80013 Post: Not sure if this is related to the ongoing issues but my account on bamstats shows a climate prediction credit for today of -995,953 thats almost 75% of my credits since joining the project in 2012 wiped out. (the project was dormant for a while but reactivated earlier this year Jan/Feb) What going on?
8) Questions and Answers : Windows : climateprediction.net project is not showing in Boinc stats though the project is attched to Boinc Manager (Message 57531) Posted 28 Dec 2017 by zaphod80013 Post: I'm having the same issue, Cross Project ID out of sync with my BOINCstats account. Project shows in the "my projects" list but not in the detailed stats "project list" tab or any of the charts. Credit from project is not being counted at all. This is the only project affected by this, all others are in sync.
