1) Questions and Answers : Windows : Is there a way to stop sulpher cycle jobs from running on my PC? (Message 17535)

Hi,

I do not like the sulphur cycle jobs running on my computer in conjunction with other CPDN models such as hadsm3 jobs.
Windows XP shuts it down within minutes of launching the application BOINC client program. Before when I had 2 hadsm3 jobs running - windows was happy to let both of them run for long periods without problems.

Can I suggest an option for participants to either contribute or not to the sulphur cycle jobs in the user preferences control panel?

I have aborted several times now within minutes before windows shuts it down, the sulphur cycle jobs because I don\'t want them running on my computer.
2) Message boards : Number crunching : is it possible to use a cpu less than 800mhz (Message 14961)

OK, I think this is related to this thread but could be wrong - admins feel free to move it, thanks.

I have an old PIII 450mhz in storage minus Hard drive, and was wondering if its worthwhile fixing it up to run one climateprediction.net model under Windows 98SE. At the moment I have 2 x LGA775's crunching away on 4 models and they love it!! lol! so a little bit more might help.
I actually have the urge to restore this 'old' PC and use it for emergency internet/email access when its not executing some project - just in case.

I've tried that suggestion, but its not working for me despite triple checking all the characters of my account I.D and verifying that it was copied correctly to the project starting window.

5) Message boards : Number crunching : Controlling 2nd BONIC client on P4 HT machine (Message 11584)

Hi All,

Just want to know if there is some way of controling the CPU's uasge in running 2 BONIC clients. 1st instance of this is 10% complete and 2nd instance is only 1.5% complete after installing 2nd instance last night. My problem is the CPU is throtttling along at 100%, so how do I turn down (preferably) the 2nd instances usage of the CPU Without interfering with the performance of the 1st instance?

Many thanks in advance.
6) Questions and Answers : Preferences : Not Clear on which General Settings are for HD and which are for RAM? (Message 11580)

"virtual memory" is the page file on your HD or some would say "mechanical memory" it is not as efficient as the actual RAM itself eg: If this kind of memory has to be used often it will prematurely wear out the HardDive because of increased read/write work done by the mechainical arm in the HardDrive unit.

In my system which runs this program I have 2Gb of DDR2 @ 533Mhz - this is by far the most efficent "electronic" memory in my system and likewise with other PC's though they could be of the older DDR1 specification> eg: it could be somehting like 512Mb DDR @ 400Mhz.

Hope this clarifies things a little easier as too what actually is virtual memory but to adjust the program's settings strictly for RAM, still escapes me at the moment. However, I am useing just over 100Mb of RAM for 2 BONIC's climateprediction programs and just under 100Mb of "virtual memory" for both.
I would personally like to know, like the original question here in this topic how to use less "virtual memory" and a lot more RAM ( as I have plenty to spare!). I'm still searching in the forums for this as I can not find it in the FAQ's.
