21) Message boards : Number crunching : If Boinc ever DID make a 64-bit version... (Message 13710)

You can see how cheap AMD64's are, even right now...

You can get a discounted motherboard with AMD64 2800+ for about $200 or $250 - not a huge outlay of cash for most people. That just gives you some idea of how soon it will be before most people are sitting there with 64-bit CPUs, just waiting for a 64-bit OS (and Boinc).

How much work would it be to optimize the program currently running on Boinc? I mean, do we have programmers still helping us with this project, or are we totally out of resources in that department?

If we do have some, what are they working on right now?

I\'m not exactly unusual with my AMD64 processor. They are quite cheap, which means that everyone buying a computer from about 3 months ago onward, will be moving to a 64-bit processor. I think there has to be a growing demand for a 64-bit client.

I also feel like I have no choice but to suspend my CP crunching until I at least get a timeframe of a fix. There has been no real word on when it will be fixed.

For all I know the results I'm crunching aren't getting to CP.net either!
I've heard rumors about the server being full or something like that.

I'm looking at various "life science" DC projects, such as worldcommunitygrid.org which helps understand protein folding, etc. I guess that would also help everybody out.

Of course, if I hear that CP.net is back up, I'd love to resume this project. I already invested 3 months in it...

24) Message boards : Number crunching : So does Windows 98 work or not with BOINC? (Message 13559)

Right now I just installed it on a Win98 SE machine, with 384 RAM and a Duron processor. It seems to be running ok -- will I necessarily have problems later?

I\'m just wondering because the website here STILL claims that Win98 will work with Boinc/CP.Net

Somebody here told me that was not the case. If so, why? Why don\'t they update the system requirements?

I hope they\'re at least working on it -- it\'s been what, 4 days now?

26) Message boards : Number crunching : How long to get 1 trickle on 500 MHz Celeron? (Message 13536)

How can they say there is a minimum CPU speed? They can require a certain amount of RAM (or it will complain "not enough memory") or a Pentium-class CPU (if it uses Pentium instructions), other programs can require a 3-D card to run, but how do you require a certain MHz of CPU?

It's an arbitrary figure, I say. All they can do is say, "under 800 MHz will give poor performance" but since Intel CPUs make only incremental improvements over the different generations, there is little differnce between a Pentium 75 and a 3.0 GHz P4 except clock speed (And the 3.0 GHz is hyperthreaded, and so appears as 2 CPUs)

But you get what I'm saying...

The Win98 box first mentioned (at the bottom of this thread) is currently not being used - I wiped it with Mandriva 2005 LE Linux. The problem is that box has a bad video card that any Linux doesn't like - so the graphical interface looks all messed up.

BTW, my 500 MHz Celeron does have 128 RAM, so maybe that's why it's running BOINC ok.

How can you tell that machine is running Win98 SE? The machine I am posting from right now is an AMD64 3500+ WinXP box. Is there a listing of computers I've signed up or something?

Has anyone tried installing Boinc on that slow of a machine? I just did, and it will be interesting to see if I get ANY credits from it...

I'm also missing about 7 or 8 trickles, the last one was 2 days ago, the 14th.

What is the problem?
Both the Boinc 4.19 software (1st tab, \"Projects\", where it shows your total credit) and my profile page BOTH are ignoring the last 6 or 7 trickles! I\'m condemned to have 13,232 for the rest of my life it would seem.

I sure hope that credit is being kept track of somewhere, or I\'m outta here! Like anyone, I don\'t like getting gyped of my credits.

I know there have been several trickles, the \"messages\" tab told me this. They always showed up in the past -- is something broken?

Does Antivirus on/off make a big difference?

What about networking, misc. resources etc. that take up valuable processor cycles? I wonder how I could make WinXP leaner to give every spare processor cycle to Boinc.

Also, does it matter when you close the program? I don't want to lose any progress (or not too much)

33) Message boards : Number crunching : When will a 64-bit version Bionic be released? (Message 11210)

Of course, I might as well wait for a 64-bit Windows XP to be released first ;)

I was all excited the day I got my Athlon64, and installed the Microsoft Beta of XP 64 -- and wasted about 3 hours of my evening. Why? Most things were running ok --

EXCEPT it didn't recognize my Creative Labs Audigy card -- not exactly a 3rd rate (or unpopular) sound card.

I'm back to regular 32-bit XP. Hoping for the day 64-bit will take off enough to get some good drivers for common hardware.

What that day dawns, however, can I expect a 64-bit Boinc as well?
