1) Message boards : Number crunching : sulphur version 4.22 released (Message 18300)

Back when Sulphur was being developed, someone said that an experimental version ran much better on AMD with a certain switched turned on --

Does anyone know if moves have been made to allow AMD processors to run the projects effcienetly? The whole \"Disable SS2/SS3 if it\'s not a Pentium IV\" was quite under-handed, and takes away a lot of processing ability from an otherwise VERY powerful AMD processor.

Or does the bias against AMD processors continue?

Just wondering.

I am referring to the Windows version as well.

I have BOINC 4.25 installed now, and I'll see how it works.

My machine gives me a run-time error when I try to run hadsm 4.13.

I am not overclocked anymore either -- I\'m at stock speeds. I deleted my 4.12 project, and downloaded a new one. Now I can\'t participate in BOINC at all?

Is there a glitch with it, or should I upgrade Boinc beyond the version I have now (4.19)?

I was thinking maybe I should uninstall/reinstall BOINC.

I have an AMD64 system, 3500+

7) Message boards : Number crunching : More on Intel Fortran Compiler and AMD Chips (Message 14399)

Is it a big deal for them to recompile the code with a new version of the Intel compiler?

Are there any plans to do so? You'd think that a lot of people would love it, as it would mean getting more science done per day on EVERYONE's machine, without any hardware upgrades!

They should upgrade to the 8.1 compiler, and apply the patch that is available on this site:

<a href="http://www.swallowtail.org/naughty-intel.html">http://www.swallowtail.org/naughty-intel.html</a>

Then recompile Boinc so that it will run faster on AMD chips. Maybe that's why it runs slower on AMD!

And it certainly does run slower than it should -- my Athlon64 3500+ averages 2.27 sec/TS whereas my wife's Dell Pentium 4 3.0 GHz HT machine gets 3.40 sec/TS PER CPU (of which 2 CPUS show up, because of hyperthreading)

Now do the math - her machine seems to be able to do more work per day than mine. It is a bit slower - but it should be twice as slow, since she's getting twice the Work Units done.

My machine has a faster FSB, etc. and should be getting things done faster than it is.

You forgot about volcanic eruptions :)

They cause more ozone depletion with one eruption than 10 billion cans of underarm deodorant :)

Seriously though, I think the truth lies somewhere in between. Industrialized nations are living a VERY unnatural existence - the average person doesn't even TRY to cut back on fossil fuel burning (Solar and Wind power, anyone? Why aren't hybrid cars cheaper?)

On the other hand, it is arrogant of man to think he can destroy the earth. God designed the earth better than that.

However, He might allow the imminent weather- and climate-induced disasters to be the punishment of our arrogant "we will call the shots" mentality... As in, "No more praying for rain for us! We have cloud seeding!"

Yes I see that -- I feel kind of stupid for not figuring that one out -- I just remember it used to say "1830" and I thought, "How can we estimate weather in the past? Shouldn't we start from where we are today" and figured it might have meant something else.

Right now it's at 2060.

Thanks for your help --

I am not using any special plugin -- just right clicking on the project\'s WORK window, and clicking \"Show Graphics\". I am using BOINC 4.19.

Everything is working OK -- but I was wondering:

How do we know if we are looking at summer, or winter? In Texas, 15 c. would be a great temp. for January, but not for July! That is why I would like to know what season I\'m looking at.

I haven\'t received any credits since the day they \"fixed\" the credit/stats server.

There has to be another problem with the server -- hopefully they are working on it...

Unlike last time, the trickles are showing up on my stats page - but it\'s as though they all merit 0 credits!

Anyone have an idea about this?

17) Message boards : Number crunching : Linux vs. Windows crunching speed (Message 13816)
Posted 24 Jun 2005 by old_user65568
Post:
Why do they do that, I wonder? The same reason Dell snubs AMD to this day? They can't honestly say there isn't demand, that they are a small player, etc. they're up to 1/3 market share now I think! Considering who they're up against, they are doing great! They really must have something going for them technology-wise, or everyone would go with the big boy Intel.

You'd think it would be worth their while to release an AMD-enhanced version as well. Isn't there a more "neutral" compiler available than the Intel one they are using?

I don't think the very fastest would come from a P4 - I'm more inclined to place my bets on a fast AMD processor (such as the AMD64 FX) Those are also much more overclock-friendly, AFAIK.

Excluding high-end servers and supercomputers, of course...

In another post, someone said that Linux is faster than Windows for CP.net crunching.

How much faster?

I know that there are 64-bit Linux available (my main machine is 64-bit) but is there a 64-bit client for CP.net?

If not, how fast is the 32-bit client compared with Boinc 4.19 running on WinXP 2nd edition?

20) Message boards : Number crunching : If Boinc ever DID make a 64-bit version... (Message 13781)

Is there a real shortage of programming talent? What I'm thinking is, if someone (like me) was anxious for 64-bit AND had the ability to program, perhaps that is the solution.

If someone could jump-start me on how to get a development environment set up for Win64 (and how to compile Boinc sourcecode) I might try it myself.

I found the page on "how to compile Boinc" and it looks like there are several libraries I have to install and compile. That is the kind of complexity I have to work through.

According to Microsoft, anything compiled for .NET will work automatically at the right bit-level (32 or 64) because the runtime libraries are all that will need to be changed. Other things will require a recompile.

Matthew
