1) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : Credits on Macs (Message 54593)
Posted 29 Jul 2016 by Brian Scannell
Post:
Hi Les - I can confirm that all of the completed wah2 tasks now have credit attached to them - thank you to all involved.

One follow up observation. BOINC still appears to allocating almost all calculation capacity to this project - is that because it focuses on the average work done rather than any other measure?

Thanks again.

Post:
I have the same problem that the Claimed Credit for all wah2 tasks shows as '---' and the Granted Credit is 0.00 - with approximately 60 wah2 tasks completed and several currently being processed.

From a quick read of some of the other posts, I'm unclear whether I need to ask that someone runs the appropriate script or whether my tasks will be spotted in an automatic sweep? If the latter, they haven't been so far.

It isn't a huge issue for me, but it does mess up the allocation of time between CPDN and other projects.

I'd be grateful if you could clarify the position.

Thanks.
3) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : No Tasks Available for Mac? (Message 52699)

Any idea when we might see some more Mac tasks released? As an aside, is there any specific reason why tasks cannot be compiled for both Windows and Mac given that the underpinning chipsets are the same? Is there functionality missing from the Mac compilers? Just curious.
4) Message boards : Number crunching : Model keeps crashing (Message 25472)

Post:
I run CPDN on my office machine and this was recently changed so that I\'m now running a Dell GX520 with P4 3GHz and 1GB of RAM. However, every work unit that has downloaded since I changed machine has crashed, typically after around 30 hrs of processing.

The messages from the latest two units to give up the ghost are:

05/12/2006 15:44:15|climateprediction.net|Unrecoverable error for result hadcm3ohc_1h6d_05617276_1 ( - exit code -1073741674 (0xc0000096))

and

05/12/2006 18:43:40|climateprediction.net|Unrecoverable error for result hadcm3ohc_0xns_05591983_0 ( - exit code -1073741819 (0xc0000005))

I have also seen other exit codes, but all seem to only vary in the final digit.

Is this a machine problem, a problem transferring the code from one machine to the other or what?

Any suggestions for how to stop this so I might get to see a run complete would be appreciated.

Thanks, Brian

p.s. I appreciate that in any simulation model, there is always the possibility of the system going out of bounds, but this seems to be happening far more frequently than I owuld have expected - indeed I don\'t recall having this happen on any of the various machines I\'ve run CPDN on int he past.

Thanks for the clarification Les - no criticism intended. I will endeavour to be patient while waiting for the Mactel version of CPDN to arrive. Regards, Brian
6) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : Recurring Calculation Errors on new iMac (Message 20666)

Post:
I tried detaching from the Climate Prediction poject and connecting to other projects. I have now succssfully processed several work units for predictor@home and am currently running a work unit for Einstein@home.

So it does look as though the problem really is an incompatability between the climateprediction.net model (or at least the sulphur variant) and the Intel Mac machines.

Hopefully this will be addressed at some point as I would like to get this machine working on the climateprediction.net project asap. Can anyone advise whether this is a known issue and whether / when a solution is planned?

Thanks, Brian

Les - thanks for the reply.

I thought the Rosetta software was meant to enable \"old\" PowerPC applications to run on the Intel machines - is there a reason why would it not work for BOINC/CPDN?

This is where my ignorance shows itself, but is it the BOINC software or the CPDN model that will need to be updated to cope with the MacIntel platform? Whichever it is, do you have any idea when updated software might be available?

Post:
I have been running BOINC/CPDN on a Mac mini for a while without major problems. However, I have just purchased a new Intel Core Duo iMac and am finding it impossible to get a work unit processing.

I set up the new machine using the transfer facility from the Mac mini. This transfers applications as well as user files, so BOINC and CPDN were on the iMac when I started using it.

I assumed that it was working on the same work unit that was on the Mac mini (which I intend to continue using), so I disconnected the iMac from the CPDN project and then reconnected. This prompted it to download a new work unit, but it almost immediately crashed.

I wondered whether the problem might be that the required library had not transferred, so I deleted all of the BOINC folders I could find and re-installed from scratch, starting with the required library.

Installation appeared to be fine and I was able to connect to CPDN and download a work unit. However, this too crashed almost immediately after starting computations.

I left it overnight and it transferred another work unit first thing this morning and that too started calculating and then almost immediately crashed, showing a computation error.

Is there a problem with running BOINC/CPDN on the Intel Macs or has the transfer created a problem?

Any help getting up and running would be greatly appreciated.

9) Questions and Answers : Windows : BOINC Manager is not able to connect to a BOINC Client (Message 20501)
Posted 19 Feb 2006 by Brian Scannell
Post:
Jim - thanks for the impressive set of suggesstions.

A combination of time presure and a desire to reconfigure BOINC to run as a service, irrespective of whether anyone is logged in, meant that I ended up taking the cowards route - I uninstalled BOINC and then reinstalled using the latest code.

As soon as I reinstalled, BOINC started up perfectly happily, reconnected to the CPDN project and (as far as I can tell) continued work on exactly the same work unit that it had been processing.

So a somewhat bizarre experience, but fortunately I have the machine back up and running and being productive.

Thanks again, Brian

Ryle - thanks for the suggestion. I tried it exactly as you suggested, but to no avail. I\'m still getting the same message that it could not connect to a BOINC client. It is almost as though the client files have become corrupted or something of the sort.

Anyway, thanks again for the suggestion - it feels as though it *should* have worked!

11) Questions and Answers : Windows : BOINC Manager is not able to connect to a BOINC Client (Message 20479)

Post:
This morning I enabled remote desktop connection on a Windows XP machine and then rebooted the machine, only to be greeted by the message \"BOINC Manager is not able to connect to a BOINC Client\".

It offers me the options of Retry or Cancel. Retry just brings back the same message and cancel opens BOINC Manager but unconnected to any projects.

As far as I know BOINC CPDN was running perfectly happily until I rebooted the machine and the only change that I can think of was enabling remote desktop connection - could this be the cause fo the problem?

How do I get the project running again?

Thanks, Brian

14) Questions and Answers : Windows : Problems with trickles? (Message 15003)
Posted 9 Aug 2005 by Brian Scannell
Post:
Quick update - the machine on which I re-started BOINC yesterday evening trickled overnight, so I will try that on the other machine and see whether that solves the problem. It would appear to be a BOINC 4.45 issue as I've never had the problem before.

Thanks, Brian

Post:
One machine has an ATi card and the other has an Intel integrated graphics - so I guess I score 2 out of 2 for problem graphics choices! That explains the lack of graphics, but that lack of trickles is more peculiar. The machines are on separate networks (one at work, one at home) and I haven't changed anything in the network configuration at either location since they last trickled. It is almost as though 4.45 is just "forgetting" to send a trickle - there are no messages to suggest any comms difficulties.

Anyway, I'll have a look at the BOINC-Wiki page as you suggest. Thanks for the direction.

16) Questions and Answers : Windows : Problems with trickles? (Message 14991)
Posted 8 Aug 2005 by Brian Scannell
Post:
Well I was assuming they were processing because the CPU time was counting up and the time remaining reducing - also the system task manager says that the CPU utilisation is 100% and CPDN is using almost all of it. However, when I select "show graphics" precisely nothing happens. Even forcing BINC Manager to exit and then restarting the process doesn't change anything - still no response to "show graphics".

Should I abort and start all over?

Post:
I have two XP machines (id 77891 and 9811) which I recently updated to BOINC client 4.45. Both appear to be working fine - slowly but merrily clocking their way through their allocated work units. However both seem to have stopped sending in trickles (last trickle on one was 2/8 and on the other 4/8). As a result neither appears to be receiving credits at the moment.

Is this a problem with client 4.45 or is there a setting somewhere that I have to adjust?

Thanks, Brian

18) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : gethostbyname failed (Message 14668)
Posted 26 Jul 2005 by Brian Scannell
Post:
Patience is indeed a virtue!

I left it alone for a couple of days and now it is indeed calculating. It hasn't shown an error message for a while, but it has today downloaded another work unit whilst it is only 3.6% of the way through the unit it already has. I'm sure there is some *good* reason for it, so hey, so long as it's happy...

Thanks for the help. Brian

I have been running CP without much problem on Windows PC for a good while, but I recently purchased my first Mac (a Mac mini). I\'ve been trying to get BOINC/CP working on the machine but to no avail.

I have tried the suggested fix by Clay recommended in other questions, but it doesn\'t appear to have improved matters.

One of he error messages I am getting is \"gethostbyname failed\" - would this cause the system not to work? If so, how can I fix it? I have specified a name under the MAC OS system configuration, but my knowledge of MAC OS is pretty much nil, so I could have done something wrong.

All help gratefully appreciated.
