41) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : iMac VMWare - Tasks only running on one core despite no outstanding uploads. (Message 57591)

Hi PDW,
Thanks for the that. Grr, completely missed it. Don't know how it happened - it's a new VM & I could have sworn it was running with both cores.
Oh well, I'll reset Fusion after task completion.
Thanks again.
PS - Dave - Yes, not exactly a MAC problem although I don't know if Fusion behaves identically on all platforms.

Thanks Dave, but with VMWare Fusion on an iMac, one can run two instances of BOINC at the same time. Fusion creates a unique environment for Windows, which is entirely separate from the OSX user environment. I don’t do it, as it simply results in doubling the run times for the respective tasks, so there's no real benefit.

Sorry for the strange title.
I'm running VMWare Fusion on my iMac and it's set up to use both cores and this has never been changed.

It's been running two tasks with no problems for some time.

During the recent problem with uploads, one my tasks hadn't completed (Backing off problem) and I had a new task waiting to start.

The problem has been resolved and all the waiting files (zips) were uploaded successfully with the related task showing successful completion.

The strange thing is that the waiting task on my system hasn't started and is still showing 'Ready to start'.
Machine name - WIN-I21CUCJIA1O Task - 20937820
I tried an 'update' - still didn't start.
Tried 'Suspend' & 'Resume' - still the same.
Nothing wrong or changed in my settings as far as I can see.

Has anyone come across anything like this before?
Any ideas welcome.

David

Hi Sergey,

Re your problem here
----So, I can't upload 14 files. For example:

This is the problem that I had when I started off this thread.
For more information look at the first few posts to this thread.
All my uploads finished correctly after 6-8 days. I had about 8 of them.
Seems that it was some problem with an upload server but no info on what exactly.
Hope this helps.

I had a similar problem a couple of months ago. Everything uploaded after about 8 days.
Very frustrating when one doesn't know where the problem lies.

Thanks for the info geophi, I'd used an advanced search but didn't spot anything like my tasks - upload problems after successful completion - that had such a long delay before uploading properly.

There was a similar problem back in 2005, but that had a "Temporarily failed upload" message whilst my error was "Backing off... "'.

It would be interesting to know the reason for the problem.
Thanks again.

Well, everything got uploaded late last night, after 8 days.

I'd previously checked all the forums to see if anyone had seen anything like this in the past. Various combinations of 'project' 'backup', 'pending', 'upload' etc.. with no luck. (But I think the searches only look at titles)

It was the restsrt zips that threw me, since, if they all went to Oxford, and no server problems had been reported there, was there another problem?

Anyway, looks like patience is the key.

Windows 7
Just wondering if anyone on this forum has come across this.
Task completed successfully. Some zip files uploaded OK.
On completion of task, the last few zips, including restart, keep getting 'backed off'. This has been going on for 8 days with 2 tasks.

Can zips be uploaded 'manually'? EG aborted & restarted?
Any other advice more than welcome.

Can't see any problems with the servers.
Any ideas anyone?

On reflection, I felt I should look at actualities in the past and not just respond with a personal kneejerk reaction.
In 2005, paradox did indeed create a blog on the site he mentions, and seemed much less dogmatic than he does here, albeit having a very warped viewpoint of scientists mindsets.
"While some camps are convinced man is the cause of this growing chaos I am not so sure. When you sift through the rhetoric you realize that all of the experts and activists still do not know enough. They pretend that they dobut they do not. While science deals in probabilities and they have reached a quasi-consensus about global warming it is far from the ideal foundation from which to implement policy either globally or regionally. Yes, curbing CO2 emissions and developing alternative energies is critical but there are elusive and enigmatic forces working that must be identified, studied and understood for a realistic solution to become viable."

That was 12 years ago.
Since then, much peer reviewed research has been completed, published and confirmed many times.

Out of what must be thousands of confirmatory research activities, I've picked 2 links to what I think are very readable studies of current Climate Change which show factual evidence and validation of theory, confirming that the current planetary weather systems and environment are changing incredibly rapidly (in geological terms) in unprecedented ways that are entirely anthropogenic in cause.
I've also pointed to a psychological study which identifies the psychosocial causes of human impacts on the planet with relation to GHG's, showing also that the species has reached a density making it an actual planetary force in terms of environmental change, not just clumps of animals with simply local effects.

To any reasonable mind these three alone really do blow the mythologies created by Climate Change deniers out of the water.

Anthropogenic Climate Change
Quote from Sceptical Science
“Like a detective story, first you need a victim, in this case the planet Earth: more energy is remaining in the atmosphere.
Then you need a method, and ask how the energy could be made to remain. For that, you need a provable mechanism by which energy can be trapped in the atmosphere, and greenhouse gases provide that mechanism.
Next, you need a ‘motive’. Why has this happened? Because CO2 has increased by nearly 50% in the last 150 years and the increase is from burning fossil fuels.
And finally, the smoking gun, the evidence that proves ‘whodunit’: energy being trapped in the atmosphere corresponds exactly to the wavelengths of energy captured by CO2.
The last point is what places CO2 at the scene of the crime. The investigation by science builds up empirical evidence that proves, step by step, that man-made carbon dioxide is causing the Earth to warm up.”

Hi All,
I very nearly wasted a lot of brain power to provide a logical, fact based, evidence supplied, rebuttal of the first post by 'paradox'. Then having seen its latest contributions, I was going to suggest deleting this thread completely, owing to its complete uselessness in contributing to human knowledge.
However, I realised that this is a public forum and even incoherent babblers are allowed to post and censoring even this is unethical.
The only sensible option is to completely ignore such specious nonsense, leaving the post free for paradox to vent (his/its) (can't be a 'her') verbal flatulence.
It could be amusing to see how far 'fake news' could be stretched.

Well, looking in the Task list under my computer, I find I have a total of 12 tasks registered as 'in progress'.
Five are reissues, other seven are new issues. These seven include the three which are are currently showing up on my BOINC management screen.

Nine of the total were tasks that I received before the system glitches and which continued to hang (not downloading) after the system was up and running again, which led me to aborting them.

Anyone any ideas? Will the system admin guys eventually delete the references to the aborted tasks?
