1) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : BOINC 5.4.9 under Mandriva 2006 (Message 24675)
Posted 12 Oct 2006 by ggemmill
Post:
Apologies if this has been asked before - just point me in the direection of answers if they exist.
Installed BOINC under Mandriva 2006, and using ./run_manager as suggested, issued at the moment from a terminal:
1. Why do I need to su root in order for this command to succeed? The script and the executable have execute privileges.
2. what is the meaning of these error messages and what should I do to avoid them?
[root@Bach BOINC]# ./run_manager
send: -1
send: Bad file descriptor
connect: Connection refused
connect: Operation now in progress
I shall put the command in my logon script when I know the answers!
The text of the run_manager script is
cd \"/home/graeme/BOINC\" && exec ./boincmgr $@
TIA
2) Questions and Answers : Windows : Premature termination (Message 24086)

Post:
Les, if that\'s the case, I\'d like to clear out all old files, projects etc
and start again. Selecting the project and clicking \"Reset Project\" has no effect.
Can I manually delete all files and directories with \"climate prediction\" in the name (including the .xml files)?
Thanks
Graeme

Something seriously terminal has happened to my Sulphur run. With fewer than 600 hours to go on an estimated 3400 hour run, there was a series of \"scheduler request unsuccessful\" messages to do a trickle up. Then there was a \"scheduler request succeeded\" message followed by an error message to the effect that a result was never sent. Unfortunately I don\'t have the message file, because of a computer restart. Climateprediction remains a project, but there is no running task, even after the restart.
BOINC 5.4.9, latest result 1316055, work unit 858255.
dataout contains a restart.day, phist.day and a thist file all with the same time stamp. yabsd.out file has a time stamp 6 minutes later. It has the message
SLAB TIMESTEP 1125
3395537 words long
MODEL DUMP SUCCESSFULLY WRITTEN - 3434914 WORDS TO UNIT 22
followed by eight REPLANCA update required messages, followed by (incomplete)
REPLANCA: UPDATE REQUIRED FOR FIELD 74
REPLANCA - time interpolation for field 74
The last few messages on stderr_um.txt are:
OPEN: File dataout/dqcuea.da74110 Created on Unit 22
CLOSE: WARNING: Unit 66 Not Opened
OPEN: File dataout/dqcuea.pg74jan Created on Unit 66
CLOSE: WARNING: Unit 67 Not Opened
OPEN: File dataout/dqcuea.ph74jan Created on Unit 67
CLOSE: WARNING: Unit 68 Not Opened
OPEN: File dataout/dqcuea.pi74jan Created on Unit 68
OPEN: File dataout/dqcuea.da74140 Created on Unit 22
OPEN: File dataout/dqcuea.da74170 Created on Unit 22
OPEN: File dataout/dqcuea.da741a0 Created on Unit 22
OPEN: File dataout/dqcuea.da741d0 Created on Unit 22
OPEN: File dataout/dqcuea.da741g0 Created on Unit 22

File dataout/dqcuea.pi74jan is the last file created in dataout before the restart.day file.
Anything to be done?
4) Questions and Answers : Windows : Huge Work Unit Problem (Message 18382)

Andrew explained it quite well. Everything worked fine in estimating CPU time to completion for cpdn up until version 4.7x of BOINC. Everything above that does horrible at estimating time to completion for this project, confusing people and resulting in numerous questions to the boards. The best way to estimate time to completion right now is to see how far you have gone (% done in work tab) and see how long it has taken (hours CPU time), and figure it out from that.

Actually, I think the OP has a point, although he mistook the units. My current Sulphur run has completed 3.76% in 136 hours(host id 244387), which makes a completion run time estimate of about 3600 hours, while there is a report deadline of 12/11/2006. When I was a project manager, we used a figure of 1650 - 1700 man hours of work per year, so if computers running CP are on during work hours, I\'m looking at a completion at end 2007! Since we\'re being urged to save energy by turning off equipment when it\'s not being used, should the CP people be hoping that contributors will keep their PCs on 16 hours a day?
Anyway, how significant is the report deadline? Will my contribution be ignored if the deadline is not met?
Regards to all.
5) Questions and Answers : Windows : hadsm execution error (Message 17494)
Posted 28 Nov 2005 by ggemmill
Post:
You should get some sort of message in the message tab of BOINC Manager, and also there may be something in stderrdae.txt and stderrgui.txt in your BOINC folder.

There were no error messages in any of the places/files you mentioned.
If the problem recurrs, I\'ll pay more attention to the content of the error
message. Meanwhile, I\'ll investigate the hardware checks in the reference -
thanks for that.

Twice recently hadsm3_4.13_windows_intelx83.exe has bombed and initiated a Windows XP (Home) error report. I tried to save the error report text file but it was deleted immediately the error report was sent. Would this have been of interest to CPDN technical staff? I notice that I can\'t recover the report file with an \"undelete\" action. Is there any other technical information I can supply to identify the cause of the crash?
7) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : Starting Boincmgr/boinc under Linux (Message 16437)
Posted 4 Oct 2005 by ggemmill
Post:
Hi
I would advise to start Boinc and then the BoincManager, because if you start the BoincManager first, it\'s possible that it doesn\'t succeed to connect to Boinc and you\'ll have a message saying that BoincManager is disconnected.
The important program is Boinc: BoincManager is just a graphic interface to control it, so Boinc must be started first.
HTH

Thanks for that. I have noticed when running BOINC under XP that boincmgr fails to connect about 2/3 of the time. I\'ll check that too.
Regards

Just downloaded 4.43 on my second Linux box, running Mandriva 2005LE. Since I like graphical interfaces, I want to start boincmgr from my startup script.
Question: Do I need to start both boincmgr and boinc? In that order?
9) Questions and Answers : Windows : BOINC versions (Message 12913)
Posted 27 May 2005 by ggemmill
Post:
How come people are talking about running v4.43 of BOINC, when the download page only offers v4.19, and I'm still running v4.13 on my laptop?
With all this downloading technology, doesn't BOINC download the latest version of itself?
10) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : Error message with \"client_state_next_.xml\" (Message 11857)
Posted 16 Apr 2005 by ggemmill
Post:
Running BOINC 4.19 under Mandrake 10.1:
My syslog has the following error message:
Apr 16 08:43:54 Bach famd[4683]: stat on "client_state_next.xml" failed: No such file or directory.
It's true - the directory contains "client_state" and "client_state_prev".
Is this a buglet? Since everything's running OK, I'm not worried.
11) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : Parse Problem (Message 11034)
Posted 17 Mar 2005 by ggemmill
Post:
Just installed BOINC 4.19 under Mandrake Official 10.1.
After a few requests for work, I get the following error messages:
SCHEDULER_REPLY::parse(): bad first tag Content-type: text/plain
Can't parse scheduler reply

Is it something I'm doing wrong?
Why is every message repeated?
TIA
Graeme
