if i may attempt to inject some levity into the current situation:

- old rule of thumb in Data Processing (or IT, as the youngsters call it now):
"Everything Takes Longer Than It Takes"

- back on 10 Sep 2014, the credit calculations went haywire in the other direction, and i printed out my certificate...here is the best part:
"and has contributed 1,713,935,902,786 Cobblestones of computation
(1,480.84 sextillion floating-point operations) to climateprediction.net"

sadly, the credit calculation was fixed in a couple of days, and our credits
came back down to Earth. But for a week or two, we were really rolling...

suspended tasks, shut down BOINC, restarted BOINC, resumed tasks...same as before: no visible CPU activity...but clock running and progress climbing...

aborted...

i noticed that wingmen all errored out on these WUs...

thanks to everyone for offering info and suggestions...a real puzzle...

ok - just checked graphics...no progress at all..."step 1 of 1,039,392"...for all three WUs...

odd thing is when they each started, things looked normal for a day or two...

a puzzle indeed...

i have 3 of these WUs (hadcm3n) running on my machine 1317408...clock running but NO cpu usage visible...progress still going up at 7% to 13%...

don't remember seeing this behavior before...are these units doing anything ??? or just shoveling sand uphill ???

Running without graphics should allow more horsepower to be used for processing the workunit...and finish in less time...

Back in the early days of SETI (i'm one of the "99ers"), the first thing you did was turn off the screensaver so the single core processor could devote all of its meager horsepower to the workunit...

And when i joined CPDN five years ago i also turned off the graphics/screensaver as soon as i saw it pop up...and did the same for the Folding project...

well, another download attempt was more successful...4 out of 5 workunits are now running...the 5th failed the download...all are PNW units

Posted 27 Sep 2014 by KWSN - Sir Frank of the Wood
Post:
hello les

did the exit/restart of BOINC as you suggested...status changed to "Computation error" and message file said that the 4.zip file could not be found...and that was the end...at 11,508 credits out of 12,440 or so...

on the bright side, none of the wingmen on this task got past zero !!!

...odd behavior of 3n work unit at 100%...elapsed clock still running, completion clock shows "---", status "Running", and no messages about upload attempt...

would this indicate waiting for server or something else ???

sure am glad i printed out my 88,000,000 cobblestone certificate...i won't need to print out another one for about 361.46 years, according to my calculations...

that will save a LOT of paper...

i have 2 of the new batch (cm3s)...and 3 of the cm3p's...

when running, each one runs for 10 or 11 seconds, exits with zero status, and immediately starts over...and runs again for 10 or 11 seconds and starts over...

any ideas ???

to Grahamt (and others)

those of us who have been through the "pauses" and "gaps" in the posting of credits over the years share a secret: anytime you put your machines on hold, more work units are available for those of us who continue to crunch !!!

20) Message boards : Number crunching : "Waiting for Memory" message seems to be cooling problem... (Message 47204)
Posted 30 Sep 2013 by KWSN - Sir Frank of the Wood
Post:
...this morning, my machine started pausing with "Waiting for Memory" message...after a short period (30 or 40 seconds), crunching would resume...plenty of memory available (700 or 800 meg)...

i watched the pattern for a half-hour or so on Task Manager...and then i realized that the pattern was much too regular...okay - probably overheating...

shut down, removed fan, and removed dust/lint/cat fur
from heat sink...re-started, and everything is back to normal...
