Hopefully no one will bash me for replying to my own question.

astroWX, thank you very much for that response, I was actually unable to access those forums because they were indeed offline. I was unaware of the backup server before now, so thank you for that reply.

Thyme Lawn, I can see how that makes sense. In that case, maybe there should be a BOINC forum? Since it is the actual BOINC client I am referring to (although project-specific board would be a good idea to add in case one particular server is acting up a bit oddly - CPDN was acting up under 4.19 when I ran it, but it was the only working version I had until I realized I could upgrade to the "unstable" 4.26 version). As for a server status page, there are many implications of that design. You could have a dynamic one that always called the script and returned (e.g.) an image, but that would have enormous performance issues. Another option is a semi-static status page that (e.g. via a cron job) updates every half hour, (a) main server (s) will contact the various project (server(s)) and cache the result, then statically serve that back to the world wide web. Of course, then you have to worry about security exploits... although IIRC server status pages should be very easy to make. Albeit they'd be lesser priority until the BOINC base is done, at least in the eyes of most programmers. (Just like how in the Windows client they sacrificed graphic frills for portability, for the time being.)

Considering how many people have submitted this question, I think that maybe this error message is an intermittant error that many people are getting that has to do with server overload. Could be that the database server(s) need to be upgraded or that a new server needs to be added to a database server cluster or something. As much as I want to help the ClimatePrediction.Net project, if I can't sign in with BOINC and get work units, what am I supposed to do?

(OT: Is there any way to consolidate forum topics?)

5) Questions and Answers : Windows : CPDN & BOINC 4.25 ? (Message 10935)
Posted 15 Mar 2005 by old_user63640
Post:
On my machine, BOINC 4.25's GUI failed to communicate with a nonexistant service on a clean install, and wouldn't add any projects. But the command line client seems to work okay.

For the time being, I'm going to stick with 4.19 until 4.25 is "fixed".
6) Questions and Answers : Windows : Seti@Home does not share BOINC with ClimatePrediction (Message 10934)

Post:
If you read the BOINC documents, BOINC would rather get 1 Project (P) done in 1 Time Unit (T) than 2P in 2T. Logically: One unit will be ready first sooner, and the second will be ready afterwards, instead of both won't be ready until the end.

E.gs:
Hours: 0-----1-----2
MethA: 0-----A-----B
MethB: 0-----------A+B

You get results sooner the way BOINC does it now, than having 10 running "all at once".

"Content-type: text/plain \\r\\n\\r\\n" is a HTTP Content header that's usually sent out by CGI programs (e.g. the "server" application) through the http server to declare what type of content there is. If you don't send this out the first time, you get HTTP 500 errors. However, if you send it too late, or you send it twice, you get one ending up in the actual "content".

I think this is probably a server bug, and should be noted to someone. I bet the Web Server that the CGI app is running on is sending out "emergancy" or other Content-Type headers by default, and the CGI app/server is sending out extra ones. In that case, one set should be disabled.

Either way, we can't get new work units or whatever, which is a bummer (especially since I can't add the project until BOINC gets a decent reply for the first time from a server).

I'm still getting "Server can't open database" errors (even without the parse errors), so... maybe the server is overloaded? If that's the case, is there anything we can do about it?
11) Questions and Answers : Wish list : Techincal Discussion Forum (Message 10929)

Post:
Maybe we could have a Technical Discussion Forum where people who believe they have a generic server/client problem that they have a fix for might want to mention it? E.g. duplicate "Content-type:" HTTP headers sent by the CGI script, database downtime, etc.

Or it could be announcement only (e.g. server status updates).

What do you think?
12) Questions and Answers : Getting started : deferring communications - can I get it to communicate when I want it to? (Message 10927)

You probably can't and shouldn't -- It'd potentially create the risk to overload the already unstable servers.
13) Questions and Answers : Windows : CPDN Command line version (Message 10920)

The executable boinc.exe in the program directory appears to be a command line interface to the program. Try running that from an XP command window with "-help" or something and see what the program responds with.
