Comments for \'Generic solutions to models\' sticky
(Message 56397)
Posted 19 Jun 2017 by Bill Glassmire Post: June 19, 2017 The climate prediction models I run fail to finish most of the time. I read the "generic solutions" explanation, and I tried to follow the "information about backups" link, but my computer could not find a page. Is there info about backups? I do not see anything about backups in the BOINC menus. Thanks. Bill Glassmire |

Posted 7 Jul 2013 by Bill Glassmire Post: Hello Les, I trust that this finds you well. Thanks for your suggestion to look in the Applications/BOINC directory. I have resolved my problem; that is, BOINCManager is now running a climate prediction task. Here is a summary of what I think is going on. (1a) The only BOINC stuff I can find on my Macbook Pro are the BOINC Data directory and the executable BOINCManager. (I have deleted the BOINC install and uninstall utilities.) In particular, when I use the Terminal utility to list the Applications directory, by the command "ls -la", I do not find any "boinc" executable. The listing does contain "BOINCManager.app". Nor can I find a "boinc" executable elsewhere on the computer. I mostly used the Spotlight function of the GUI and the "mdfind" Terminal command to do the searches. (1b) Based on the above, I think that the standard BOINC download did not install the "boinc" executable on my system. A couple of days ago I went to the message boards of the BOINC project and posted a message asking about whether the standard download installed "boinc". After I got a climate prediction task running on my computer, I posted a follow-up message saying that I did not need an answer. So far there has been no reply. (2) This is how I reolved the problem. Since I had been running a climate prediction before on my previous system, I had an old copy of the file "account_climateprediction.net.xml". I quit BOINCManager, copied that file into the "BOINC Data" directory, and restarted BOINCManager. It is now running a climateprediction.net task. If there is something I am not understanding correctly, I would be interested to hear. Thanks for your help. Best wishes, Bill Glassmire |

Cannot attach to climateprediction

Posted 3 Jul 2013 by Bill Glassmire Post: Thank you, Greg. I did shut down BOINC Manager before trying any of the attach_project commands. Here is the most important thing I have found. In this thread, message 46510, it seems like Les Bayliss has already seen this phenomenon. He gives a link to a webpage of BOINC versions: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php I am running BOINC v7.0.65. From the webpage it seems like the BOINC Manager GUI and the command line version are two different downloads. I will try downloading the command line version tomorrow. Further suggestions are welcome but not needed right now. The rest of this post is some research I did before I found Les' message. It may be interesting, but it did not help me solve the problem. Thanks again for your help, Greg. I will report whatever happens, successful or not. Best wishes, Bill Glassmire I should say, although I know how to use the Terminal app, I am a novice, and I know only a few of the commands. I tried the command "apropos boinc" and got a response "boinc: nothing appropriate". I happened upon the command "mdfind", which corresponds to a Mac spotlight search. I tried "mdfind boinc", and I also did a GUI Spotlight search for "boinc". Both methods showed only three applications relevant to BOINC: the manager, the installer, and the uninstaller. There is neither a "boinc" nor a "boinccmd". mdfind "boinc data" also shows a subdirectory BOINC Data (in /Library/Application Support), but, as far as I can see, mdfind "boinc app" shows no subdirectory BOINC App anywhere. |

Cannot attach to climateprediction

Posted 2 Jul 2013 by Bill Glassmire Post: Hello, I have been running BOINC and climate prediction on a three-year-old Macbook Pro laptop. Because of suspected malware, I recently erased the hard disk and reinstalled OS X (Snow Leopard, version 10.6.3). I have reinstalled BOINC and, using the BOINC Manager drop-down menus, several times tried to attach to climateprediction.net. As discussed over and over in this thread :), that does not work. I have read much of this thread, particularly messages number 46529 and 46530. Based on those messages, in the OS X terminal application, I tried a command like open -a boincmanager--attach_project http://climateprediction.net "my long account key" but the terminal interface does not understand the command. It responds with an error message that the account key is not a file. Could anyone explain how to attach to climateprediction from a Macintosh? Thanks for your help. Best wishes, Bill Glassmire PS If it is any help, I have an external disc with a carbon copy of the old OS X system, the one which I suspect of malware. |

Re-installing Mac OSX Snow Leopard -- best practice?
(Message 46501)
Posted 23 Jun 2013 by Bill Glassmire Post: June 23, 2013 Hello, I am running BOINC version 7.0.65 on a three-year-old Macbook Pro, with operating system Mac OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.8 . In the next couple of days, I would like to erase the Mac operating system and reinstall it. I think that the computer may be infected with a virus. BOINC is running three climate prediction tasks, all roughly 20% done. Before erasing the operating system, I am planning to abort all three climate prediction tasks. After re-installing, I plan to reload BOINC and get more tasks. Comments? suggestions? Thanks. Best wishes, Bill Glassmire |
