1) Message boards : climateprediction.net Science : Climate change in the News (Message 57357)

In an article of the Montreal French News Website (lapresse.ca) "La Presse" today, the Canada government, through the National Research Council (CNRC), wants to revise the national building and infrastructure codes to adapt to climate change. The article goes on to state that in order to do so, the CNRC needs to know what to expect. They will work with Environment Canada (Canada's Met Office) and the government's Environment and Climate Change Department to find information on the impact of rising temperatures from 0,5C to 5,0C.

Sounds like possible future opportunities for CPDN?

They have issued a "Request for Proposal" on November 6 to find a consultant to modernise the National Building Code through the update of climate data throughout the country. Not a small job though a fascinating one!

"Recently that system fell over because the amount of data being processed went over some maximum set by either the set up at Oxford or possibly University IT policies. I am not sure which."

Maybe CPDN reached an integer overflow, or perhaps a workload. I am not sure which either.

It is now getting to two months and they are obviously not solving their problem.

The basis of BOINC is to "reward" the contributors. Failing this, I would suggest perhaps it is time for people overlooking BOINC to assist and/or do something about this, and then informing us, not only through this forum, but perhaps via direct email to all contributors with outstanding credit. Now that would be needed good PR.

Iain, this sounds very plausible. From all the years, I have rarely seen so many and different tasks with so much data to analyse and credits to provide. I agree also with Ian but with my point of view. Yes, the PR with crunchers is almost non-existent on CPDN if compared to pure research sites like SETI or Einstein where crunchers provide the final Yes or No result. With CPDN, my understanding is it is a beginning, results asking so many more complex questions. Personally, I have a lot of respect for Drs. Allen and Otto and staff for dealing with these world issues, and I will always provide them with my support.

Maybe a coincidence, but since these stuck uploads, from the 18th, granted credits on AFR are off, varying by as much as 75%. Just saying..

Thank you for your suggestions.

I was hoping though for an explanation as to why the zips were fully uploading a 2nd and 3rd time. To say again: BOINC does not give up on the file in the middle of its upload or whenever, but only when 100% is fully uploaded, then decides to re-upload them. Maybe BOINC just wants to make sure it's really, really uploaded :)

This never occurred on other models before.

I have had the same error on a few zips as well, approximately 1 in 5 uploads. These files upload, then following 100% upload, they will indicate the transient error, and upload again. The trickles show to have been uploaded as they are listed on the Task's list.

As all looks fine anyway, I would not bother, but these files are larger than usual and thus require much bandwidth. These errors and their re-uploads (I've seen up to three full re-uploads with 70Mb files), they are thus becoming quite bandwidth "expensive". Can the upload be aborted after a first 100% "trial"?

Thank you

Got this new model:

10/18/2011 6:20:31 PM climateprediction.net Scheduler request completed: got 1 new tasks
10/18/2011 6:20:33 PM climateprediction.net Started download of hadcm3n_0025_1900_40_007486274.zip
10/18/2011 6:20:34 PM climateprediction.net Finished download of hadcm3n_0025_1900_40_007486274.zip

and that was it for the download with the atmos and ocean files missing.Files also absent from the HD. Nothing else was downloaded on the next hour.

Just a thought: Wouldn't be easier to send a new client_state file? Based also on the post from Les in News & Annoucements,I am experiencing all these problems with a slew of pnw's set at a too low completion time, and my first completions that crashed at 89:38:18 exactly. I do not want to abort as it took several hours of download to receive them and it would be a waste.

As Les said, not everybody read the boards, not everybody is computer savvy and some have multiple hosts.

Nice to read on the alternate message board what actually has been happening in the past few days from Jonathan and the frustration that CPDN staff has been going through.
Hang in there! I'm with you.

After having reattached to CPDN, 3 of 4 eu's downloaded together this am erred also in less than 1 min. Strangely, one is still running with correct graphics. Failed ones showed blue planets while stating "no model is running".
Hope this helps.

CPDN stopped in the process of downloading HADAM3P-EU models few hours ago. All files stuck 100% in transfer. Should I abort or hope for the best?
Thanks
