21) Message boards : Number crunching : Reduced info in graphics (Message 53033)

Maybe it is time to ask "them" if they really value our efforts or not.

Worst case is the new WAH2 tasks. They are larger, they run for a very long time, but they provide the scientists with new valuable info.

All very good, but what is in it for me/us?

If I run WAH2 tasks only, my computer is busy doing something I can not see, lots of HDD space is used and Hundreds of Megabytes of results is uploaded,
containing 'secret' info.

I do not even get a temperature plot.

All I have to do, is pay the maintenance costs as well as the power bill.

To me this is not a fair deal.

Right now I feel strongly that if 'they' do not intend to get me back in the loop, I will think about deselecting the tasks without graphics.

What do You, my fellow users, feel about this issue?

ChrisD

A little extra info:

I joined CPDN 11 Years ago, and back then, I felt I really did help the scientists improve their climate models.

Models back then also ran for week and weeks, and I did not mind, because:

In return, I was in on the research, and could watch my task progressing. Sometimes it all froze up leaving my screen blue. :)

I remember a Thermohaline model, where the North Atlantic between Iceland and New Foundland actually froze.

Right now, in real life, there is a low water temp anomally in the North Atlantic, just there, between Iceland and New Foundland.

How is that for a coincidence? :)

Running PNW tasks I can not help but noticing that the Model Day and Time is no longer displayed.

Only the actual Timestep is shown.

Not knowing the model Date and Time puts a lot of guesswork into watching the Graphics.
Is it Day or Night, Spring or Fall? This info used to tell me what to expect, but now I can only watch and guess...

I do not think displaying the model Date and Time in the graphics are going to steal a lot of CPU cycles, so why have You decided to remove this info?

Hi.

Just got me some tasks to crunch, but it seems that my internet is too slow for 2 machines to request work at the same time.
Guess I will have to make a network schedule to prevent this from happening again.
But, on both my machines I now have 2 tasks that failed to download.
Will I just have to abort these or is there a way to make BOINC try to fetch them again?

Thx :)

Thanks for the Advice :)

Last week when SETI stopped sending work, I tried a few other places, just to see if any work was in fact available.

I only got tasks from HAL@Home and Malaria.

These Tasks has finished and I have detatched from all but LHC and Climateprediction.

After I have started this thread, I have got work.

All the best to You.

You are not the only one, if that is any comfort to You. :)

I had 4 models running, 60% done but this morning an error Message said that my Catalyst Driver had problems and needed to close.

Screen was unresponsive so I had to shut Windows down and reboot.

When I got the machine back up, BOINC showed no tasks running..?.?

I have been running MemTest86+ for the last 4 hours, just to make sure the hardware is ok. No Errors.

On my account page all tasks shows computing error..

The Catalyst Driver has been deleted.

I have taken 4 new tasks in and disabled Network Traffic. This time I am going to make backups twice a day.

Bestr of Luck to You.

4 Times HADCM3N running. After 24 Hours the work produced is less than expected.
Task Manager reports that CPU load is only 4%. System Idle Task is using 95% CPU time. The 4 HADCM Tasks show Zero,1 or 2% load.
BOINC is told to crunch all the time.
I am running XP Proff. Service Pack 2.
Help anyone?

Finally there is HADAM3P EU units available, but it seems impossible to get any assigned. I have 4 CPUs and only 2 tasks running. but I am still not getting any.
Every time I request work, I get the same message: Last request too recent...
Waiting One Hour is not enough, and each time I try, I am thrown to the back of the queue, and have to wait all over again. Before I get through, all units are gone.
WHY are You doing this?

Seems that patching against this \'Intel does not like AMD\' BUG-- is still very much needed. When will they ever stop that crap??

Look here

INTEL CPU: 2971 FLOPS, 6228 INT

AMD CPU..: 3558 FLOPS, 8689 INT (FLOPS + 19.75%, INT + 39,5%)

Guess what, These 2 CPU\'s crunch current WU\'s at exactly the same speed???

AMD\'s are still forced to execute less efficient code.

We must find a way persuade AMD to make an AMD Compiler.

I would like to ask users who run an AMD Phenom II X4 processor, to post in this thread what Memory Modules they are using. DDR2 or DDR3 and memory timings please.

I can find the Phenoms, of course, but the machine specs only tell the Floating Point speed and the Integer speed.

Reason is that I currently use 2 Phenom 9500\'s, the original Agena core, clocked at 2400 and 2600 MHz.

I am using High Speed DDR2-6400 RAM Corsair clocked at 440 and 480 MHz at 5-5-5-15 timings.

Just got enough dole to buy a Phenom II X4 BE Version clocked at 3.4 GHz.

Now I wonder how much extra speed I get if I buy a new AM3 Motherboard and RAM to go with it.

Thank You for Your cooperation.

Mark, did You do something with the computer at the time. Seems that 2 tasks crashed at the same time.

snip from Inglis\' post
The page from the BOINC FAQ on the \'incorrect function error\' suffered by 11333515 and 11333403 is here

This talks about CUDA and GPU errors.

CPDN does not use GPU for processing, as far as I know.

Have You checked Your CPU temperature?

ChrisD

Coretemp is a good program, just do a search on google.

Sorry, but there must be another explanation.

I am running a HP Laptop with Win7-64 bit Ultimate and 2 HADSM3 Tasks-

Last trickle said 17,598 secs and real time was 17,943 secs. This is an overhead of 1.92%.
Even if I could switch off everything else, my gain would be just 2%.

ChrisD

Could You please give me a WU# from before and after? I would really like to see what this is..

Sorry for the late reply, but I have been down with the flu, and I was\'nt really up to participating.

Luckily my crunchers did not take notice :)

Back on-line.
I get Your point, and my first cruncher just finshed its fourth HADAM3 model.

Two other crunchers are half way through their 16 WU share of HADAM3 runs. So far one crash and 7 completed successfully.

I switched one of my chrunchers to HADSM3 and got 2 new tasks that have not been done before.

This just might be more like my cup of tea.

I have been here since the very start, and I still remember the thrill when Model Year was added to our tag by some gifted programmer (BBC experiment) and the 2012 bug that generated a lot of traffic in the forums. (All models crashed on one specific day and we all had to start over again on a modified model.)

443,390 HADSM3 runs has been completed so far.

Completing one more is not that thrilling...

Less than 1 in 10 users are active now.

Maybe we really need something new to get crunchers back.

36) Message boards : Number crunching : Wishlist: Add CUDA support (Message 39567)

Post:
Add CUDA support; you would get awfully more computing power.

People with CUDA Graphics are already gathering around Milyway@home and SETI@home where CUDA equipped computers rank up 10 fold the workload of a standard CPU based cruncher.

A lot of people do not have CUDA graphics, for one reason or another.

Some of those, me included, are remaining here at climateprediction, and I would prefer that the crew concentrates on refining the science, rather than trying to \"specialize\" the software for a specific graphics card.

Porting millions of lines of code from a Super Computer (made for the very few, MET Office for one) to a PC Based cruncher, that I can actually afford, seems to be a huge task in itself.

If the staff\'s really got some spare time on their hands, I would prefer they tried to make my computer do more for them, read optimize for AMD or port to 64 bit code f.eks.

Your crunchers seems to be happy elsewhere, anyway. (No bad feelings)

All the best and happy crunching.

ChisD.

I have had three slab models crash in a row. Is this project just about wrapped up? I don\'t see many new posts or much activity at all. What\'s up?

Seems that a new batch of SLAB Models have beed issued. I just got 2 new tasks and none of these have been completed before.

How long did Your models run before crashing? (Just passed 5.000 steps on both models, so I still have to see my first Trickle.)

I tried to get one SLAB and one HADAM3 model, but BOINC won\'t let me.

FAMOUS is in Beta testing, and this is for invited crunchers only. I have not been able to find any info on who You ask for an invitation.

So, until FAMOUS is released for \"regular\" crunchers, I suggest You try a couple more HADSM3 models or You give HADAM3 a go.

To drum up some activity here in the forums, You could post how You fare with Your next SLAB models or if You try out the HADAM3, but I suggest we would have to move to the CAFE section.

Best of luch and happy crunching.

I have almost finished crunching this WU:

Name hadam3p_mya8_1960_2_006146266_2
Workunit 6412323

Created 7 Mar 2010 17:51:46 UTC
Sent 7 Apr 2010 19:18:17 UTC

Now checking out the WU

Workunit details
application UK Met Office HADAM3P
created 27 Apr 2009 18:24:47 UTC
name hadam3p_mya8_1960_2_006146266
minimum quorum 2

Computer# 874033 completed successfully at 17 Jun 2009 15:02:29 UTC
and computer#
826426 completed successfullly at 8 Jul 2009 22:53:29 UTC

So, 9 Months ago this WU was successfully processed by 2 computers. (minimum quorum filled)

Why do we have to crunch this one again?

There must be a good reason, I just can not find it, so could somebody enlighten me?

Tell me that I am wrong when I have the feeling that WU\'s are re-issued just to keep crunchers happy?

?? ChrisD
