1) Message boards : Number crunching : CPDN Win10 Compatible ? (Message 52071)

Post:
For those who don't already know.

The release of Windows 10 is scheduled for July 29. It will be offered as a free upgrade to all registered Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 machines (upgrade is not a requirement but an option). In breaking with tradition Microsoft will continue the Insider Program. Those who currently are running the insider edition of Windows 10 will have the opportunity to either settle on the final Windows 10 release or continue on with the Insider Program and receive builds of the future Microsoft operating system. In a sense this will be much like "rolling releases" as found on GNU/Linux distributions such as openSUSE.

Although not yet specifically stated I'm sure Microsoft will be advising everyone to upgrade. My own thoughts are that in most instances an upgrade should be performed in order to gain seamless integration between devices (mobile, tablet, and desktop). Myself? I am going to remain in the Insider Program in order to follow future developments to the operating system. Having been a die hard GNU/Linux user for 14 years this was not an easy decision.

Just to add. CPDN and BOINC are both compatible. As Richard indicated most of the errors I have on both machines are for the most part normal computational errors. However there have been some stability issues on the Intel machine that requires rebooting every four days or so or it starts to bomb dramatically on the "short" models, and a reboot clears the problem. The AMD machine for the most part runs solidly with reboots only required after certain system updates. Is it an improvement over previous Windows versions? Well it certainly addresses the main annoyance of 8.0 and 8.1; namely the start menu. The rest is all somewhat subjective; you like it or you don't. Is it ready yet for what I would call "production machines"? No!!

As an aside. Users of Windows may find it helpful to install .NET 3.5 which does not come standard on Windows 8 8.1 or 10 (can easily be added through Control Panel).

Here's an idea for you Martin. You are running Win 7 so if yours is the only account then most likely yours is set to Administrator. So make a Standard user account and install Boinc as a service in that account and set it for a blank screen saver that is password protected. You can now have that account running and then switch users to your regular account which you can freely log in and out of while the Standard user remains in a screen saver state. You may need to grant the Standard user Administrator rights in order to install Boinc.

Cheers

As a short update. I have solved the runtime problem but computation errors still occur on the CM3 shorts. Mind you I have not had one of these actually crash after 10 sec but rather computation errors in the 20 min range. I believe the computation errors for the CM3 shorts have been explained adequately elsewhere in this forum.

And as a heads up for anyone who might happen to be running Windows 10 Technical Preview, .net framework 3.5 is not included either but can be enabled and downloaded through use of the Control Panel feature as described in my previous post.

Upon further reading at Microsoft this is only an issue with Windows 8 and 8.1. It seems that .net framework 3.5 was excluded from both but are included in previous versions right up to Windows 7.

The bottom line is this: you need .net framework 3.5 installed if you are running Windows 8 or 8.1. In this case check through {Control Panel>Programs and Features>Turn Windows features on or off} to verify that it is installed and active.

Have fun!!

Well I don't know if this will help anyone or not. I am running Windows 8.1 and this probably applies to Windows 8 as well (maybe even Vista). What I have discovered for my own installation is that .net framework 3.5 was needed in order to solve my problems with work units crashing after 10 sec or immediately upon startup (seems to have cleared up many computation errors as well).

Hope this is of help to others.

.net framework 3.5 can be found here

After installation run Microsoft update to get the latest patches.

An article in the Microsoft database deals with installation of .net framework 3.5 on Windows 8 and 8.1 and can be found here.

Unfortunately there seems to be a bug in the Microsoft code that misses catching applications that you might install that require .net framework 3.5, so don't rely upon Windows to inform you that you need to install it on demand. You are better to just download it and install manually.

Lastly don't forget to reboot to activate any changes (.net framework 3.5 will automatically be enabled upon installation, no need to enable it through Control Panel).

Note to the Moderators: maybe this should be a sticky (but then again perhaps it needs to be bundled with Boinc which is not our problem).

Is 2 Degrees the Right Limit for Global Warming? Some Scientists Say No

Victor and other critics, however, say that as the target becomes effectively unachievable, it threatens the relevance of the process it's intended to catalyze. Though some models show that the target can still be met, those make "heroic assumptions"immediate global cooperation, for instance, or the sudden, wide availability of new technologies.

"Pretending that they are chasing this unattainable goal has also allowed governments to ignore the need for massive adaptation to climate change," Victor and Kennel write.

Victor also points out that average global surface temperatures doesn't fully represent the changing global climate. Although the increase in average surface temperature has stalled over the past 16 years, average temperatures in the deep oceanwhere most of the extra heat in the climate system is storedhas continued to rise.

"We think it's an error to boil it all down to a single goal, given how complex the climate system is," he says.

National Security and the Accelerating Risks of Climate Change

Actions by the United States and the International community have been insufficient to adapt to the challenges associated with projected climate change. Strengthening resilience to climate impacts already locked into the system is critical, but this will reduce long-term risk only if improvements in resilience are accompanied by actionable agreements on ways to stabilize climate.

Yes it can sometimes be a royal pain trying to sort some things out.

I don't use Ubuntu so I might suggest trying their forums.

And 55 C is fine as long as that's the max under full system load. Would be very bad if that were the idling temp (should be around 23 C).

You may need to do a major update to your Ubuntu version to bring it up to 14.04 LTS.

My suggestion wasn't intended to necessarily address your particular problem.

If you are running Linux x86_64 for instance then you would also need to install the 32 bit libraries for libc.so.6.

Seeing that your client is seg faulting on startup indicates that some libraries may be missing or are incompatible.

CPDN on Linux or Windows with Intel chips doesn't like either hot operating conditions or overclocked chips. AMD's are fine overclocked as long as the heat issue is addressed.

Solve either or both as applicable and your not likely to have as many failures.

Either overgrown air coolers which may or may not allow for the re-installation of the side cover (and can be quite loud), or, liquid cooling which runs fairly quiet (and most likely will reduce your core temps by 20 C, but might require a new tower).

I have both an Amd 8350 and an Intel 4770k. Both are outfitted with a Seidon M120. Both run CPDN 24/7. The AMD being more power hungry runs at approx. 58 C, the Intel not being as power hungry runs at approx. 48 C. The Amd runs at 4.4 Ghz (overclocked no problem), The Intel runs at 3.5 Ghz (produces lots of failures if overclocked, but only on CPDN).

Obviously though different configurations using either chip will vary depending on other variables such as motherboard and ram for instance, thusly producing different results from mine. However the end does support the mean, regardless.

You could set your CPU usage down to 50%, or even lower to see if it runs cooler for now. Other than that; time to save up for liquid cooling!

I don't think it's a question as to whether the technology exists for CCS.

It's what associated risks are you (take that as you the individual or you the popular/majority consent) willing to accept.

Same thing with nuclear waste.

There are risks associated with any of these long term storage schemes.

It has to go somewhere, the question is, would you want it in your back yard?

Nobody does, but it has to go somewhere -- right?

Oh yes! I was going to make extra comment on Windows 8.0/8.1 precautions. I would not recommend using third party disk or registry tools. Although some tools work very well on previous versions of Windows including 7, you will likely destroy your Windows 8.0/8.1 installation. You are tempting fate if you do so. My most dreaded thing is the wonderful re-install.

I am no fan of Windows anyway. I prefer Unix based systems.

Wah-da-ya-mean at your age? Why installing Linux these days is so easy a "Caveman could do it". If your unsure then install VirtualBox on a Windows host, then install your favorite Linux distro as the guest operating system. Don't forget to add the extension pack and the Guest Additions. The only OS that I find too slow in a virtual environment is Open Indiana (no flash support). PC-BSD (a little finicky), Solaris (yes flash will work with the latest archive for Solaris available at Adobe), Linux and Windows all run fine in a virtual environment.

I forget right off hand whether I set the program priorities through task manager or one of the other Admin. tools though (on windows box}. Setting the program priorities is a little like using the "nice" command in Linux.

Any word on when more work units are going to be posted?

I'm running 8.1 Jim and I have no problems with it. I'm running 7.2.28 on my Linux box and 7.0.64 on the Windows box. I'll be upgrading the Windows to 7.2.28 non VirtualBox install. You simply lose too much computing power with the extra overhead. Mind you you may have to play around (through system management) with it on Win 8.1 or 8.0 a little to set it's priorities.

Hooray for classic shell.
