I can second the advice of do what the physio says (from personal experience). Maybe time to treat yourself to that new blisteringly fast PC you've always wanted?!

Have just treated myself to 63GB if RAM. about to call it a night and give up on trying to find out election results.
I think the painkillers might still be affecting you Dave, 63?? :D

Typing on phone rather than keyboard rofl

Thanks for all the messages wishing me luck with my hip. X-ray tomorrow morning to confirm all in the right place and after discharge Saturday, lots of physio exercises.

The only one I can be completely certain is retired is UK Met Office Coupled Model Full Resolution Ocean. It is the last of the tasks that used to take months on a fast machine of the day though I suspect those tasks on my current machine would be made short work of.

Unfortunately I downloaded all the testing tasks on my AMD box. I am going to send some files that Sarah requested once the restarts have been produced and then abort all or some depending on what Sarah wants so hopefully they can be picked up on an Intel box. After that I will probably be turning everything off for a few days while I have a hip replacement!

I do wonder if once I double my RAM I could get rid of swap altogether?
Probably not a good idea to get rid of the swap file. The OS behaviour would be unpredictable.
Perhaps though swap hasn't been touched since I did the upgrade. I might look at substantially reducing the size from the current 64GB the next time I do a reinstall from scratch. Though that might be a while!

The decision turns out to be academic. The old Corsair memory is fat enough that it won't fit in the slots alongside the new memory. However if I ever decide 64GB is not enough two more of the crucial modules I just bought will fit enabling me to double again.

The CPDN tasks seem to really hammer on memory, so I'd expect, if it's sufficient to run the task quantities your chip can reasonably support, "less faster memory" would be better than "more slower memory."

I think 64GB for an 8 core CPU is probably sufficient. Some tasks in testing have gone up above 9GB peak per task recently but they have the BOINC debugging code enabled which adds a lot to the overhead. If at some point the demand goes up even more, I can either go up to the max on the motherboard of 128GB or run fewer tasks. Currently I am running one of the memory intensive tasks and six WAH2ri tasks and free tells me that swap is unused. I do wonder if once I double my RAM I could get rid of swap altogether?

My guess is that it really depends on how many cores your processor has and therefore how many tasks it can run at any one time.

AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core Processor [Family 23 Model 113 Stepping 0] When it arrives, I might try with just the 64GB of faster ram and then tweak the motherboard settings to take advantage of it. I never to run more than 7 tasks at a time so that still leaves a reasonable bit of headroom. If I don't see any improvement, I might put the other 32 back in and have a ram disk.

Finally gotten around to ordering an extra 64GB of RAM. I have ordered PC3200 RAM while the 32GB I have is PC2800. Will I be better off ditching the old and just running with 64GB to take advantage of the slightly higher speed or keeping it to have 96GB total?

Main reason for upgrading is to increase the maximum number of OIFS tasks I can run at once.

I am going to let mine continue unless I see a message from Glen here or someone else at the project asking for them to be aborted. (Mine are suspended currently to let some testing branch tasks go through.

Thanks Glenn. That makes sense. I had wondered about why the usage was so high. Pleased to say they all finished with no issues my end.

Just checked, the instructions for Ubuntu in the other thread on this subject still work on Ubuntu 24.04. Nice that no names have changed and I don't need to go searching for it all.

It's probably where the model was restarted and ran over a trickle up timestep again.

Just so long as this doesn't allow gaming of the system for credit purposes!

Edit: Probably not an issue as repeated instances of trying that would probably crash the task.

There are some new OpenIFS BL app batches coming once code development & testing is complete (some time yet).
Yes, I wasn't expecting them to appear on the main site for a while in fact I am pretty certain there is time for those whose motherboards can accommodate it to upgrade their RAM in preparation and still have a fair old wait!

Won't they all go under 0C? People put wires outside all the time. My mother keeps her mower and extension cords in the garage and it gets to -10C there. They just go a bit stiffer.
Insulation not rated for the lower temperatures will likely get brittle. Norway and Finland often get -40C. When in the forces I saw insulation intended for warmer climes break. Some might be fine but just not been tested for lower temps but some not rated will almost certainly be dangerous.

There have been two batches of 60 with the 8.24app and two with 8.29. Looking at some of the tasks, all four batches have tasks that have got past the first zip on both Intel and AMD machines which rules out some causes of the tasks crashing but doesn't from where I am sitting say exactly what the problem is.

I've got one of these v8.24 tasks. It's survived one restart, so is there some difference to the tasks that almost always crashed on restart?

Impossible to say if the surviving one restart is due to any change yet. This test is to confirm that two particular ancillary files were not responsible for the failures that seemed to happen on all Intel machines. I would guess that if these run OK, there will be two or three other small batches to test the other ancillary files/to narrow down further what the issue is. Glenn is the one who could really answer that question but he may be too busy trying to find the answer right now!
