1) Message boards : Cafe CPDN : Team Recruiting Thread II (Message 38138)

Why should you join TEAM: Brian? You shouldn\'t! TEAM: Brian has an impressive 5 total members that span more than thirty projects. After more than three years of inactivity, I have finally updated the team website, which still sucks almost as much as it before the update. We have no goals and no drive. If you join TEAM: Brian you can expect nothing and TEAM: Brian expects nothing from you.

So, in short, if apathy were a category for teams, TEAM: Brian wold be number one, but also wouldn\'t really care.

TEAM: Brian has an incredible 4 members spread out over 30+ projects. Our website is a complete joke and it has not been updated in a year or more. (Probably a lot more.) We have no goals and no drive. If you join TEAM: Brian you can expect nothing and TEAM: Brian expects nothing from you. TEAM: Brian does, however, have its own city. The city is actually just a huge waste of time.

So, in short, if apathy were a category for teams, TEAM: Brian wold be number one, but also wouldn\'t really care.

Oh, by the way, I will update the web page someday. Someday...
3) Questions and Answers : Windows : Upgrading Hardware (Message 19569)

Post:
I was told, on another forum, that BOINC would detect the new processor, run a new set of benchmarks, and then not continue work on old workunits. In any case, I got all work units but the CPDN one done. I would have needed two more weeks of constant work to finish that one.

I would, however, like to thank all the well meaning people who gave me all of that wonderful advice on how to upgrade my hardware. No offence intended, but I do this kind of thing for a living and I can handle a little hardware upgrade. In total, on about ten forums, I got two posts with knowledgeable advice on how BOINC works and the rest was people arguing over how I should set up my new hardware.

I am getting ready to do a major upgrade on my computer. New motherboard, processor and RAM, so, basically, a whole new system. I plan on moving the hard drives over without installing a new OS. Should I let all of my current work units finish or will it be ok to continue work on them with different hardware? Should I Uninstall BOINC and reinstall on the new hardware or will the project care if this copy of BOINC is suddenly on a new computer? And are there any other problems that I am not thinking of?

5) Questions and Answers : Windows : BOINC 4.43 (Message 12811)

From what I have been reading, people have been having a lot of trouble with BOINC 4.43. Are there known incompatibilities and should we not upgrade to the new version?
6) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : Exactly how much space needed? (Message 12698)
Posted 20 May 2005 by Profile Brian
Post:
I need to know exactly how much space will ever be needed to run this project. Well, I need, at least a really good estimate. Here is what I have going. I run BOINC at home without any difficultly. At work, there are some Mac OSX.3 machines that I can run it on. I don't want to actually install it on the machines, so I started experimenting with installing everything on a flash (USB) drive and running it from there. So far, I have had success with getting only SETI@Home to run. When I tried ClimatePrediction.net, I was informed that there was not enough disk space. Same problem for Einstein@HOME. So I need to know how much space will be enough for ClimatePrediction.net so I can get a flash drive large enough to hold Einstein, SETI, and ClimatePrediction.net.

By the way, if I can make this work, this kinda adds a whole new level to distributed networks. You can sit down at any Mac, plug in, and go. You don't need to install. No one else deals with the software running but you. You can get work done every time you go to the lab or every day at work. You leave nothing behind for IT people to worry about but a little network traffic. Not bad, eh?
