Put it on my laptop two days ago and it is running okay.

Will upgrade my desktops as eyesight permits. (I hope it solves the strange [unrecoverable] lockups experienced a few times recently.)

From Andy at CPDN staff:

To comply with the Data Protection Act 1998, we are required to only keep personal data for as long as it is absolutely necessary. We will therefore only keep records of inactive volunteers for three years from now on. Initially any records inactive since 2014 or before that date will be removed. We will continue to remove records that have been inactive for three years or more on an ongoing basis.
Therefore anyone who signed up prior to this and has been inactive for over three years but wishes to renew their engagement will need to set up a new account. If you have been inactive for the last couple of years and wish us to retain your email and username, please reactivate your account as soon as possible.

Project credits from these accounts will be retained but will no longer be linked to an email address or username.

Current, active, volunteers, or those who have been active in the last three years, will not be affected by this policy.

Fires burning North, South, East and West of my home. Just had town 5 miles away given advisory evacuation notice which means get out but not forced. I'm trying to figure out where to go. Have sprinklers watering roof - damp house maybe less likely to burn. There is no way out. Literally. All roads closed. Times like these put life into perspective.

Wish me luck!

You have it! Best of luck to you and all affected.

Bernard,

Beta is no longer the test-mode. A new mechanism is used and it seems to be an amalgam of Alpha and Beta.

Linux is represented among testers. Thanks for the offer.

It is possible for scientific evidence to help apportion responsibility for climate damages among fossil fuel producers. Our paper shows how

Building on JIM's post, which is spot-on:

CPDN tasks are validated - with scientific algorithms. You can rest assured that scientists submitting work to CPDN are interested in reliable results. After all, numerous peer-reviewed papers have been published based upon our work (theirs and ours).

Staff replied to my message of late yesterday. The script has not been changed and was manually started before the message to me. It runs a long time and I won't know when it finishes -- (in recent weeks my machines ran, and continue to run, CPDN development work, for which we receive no boinc credit...) You'll know when you find your credit adjustment posted in your account.

Hang in with us. It is the science that matters, not credit, eh?

By the way, couldn't these credit scripts run every night, at quiet hours, eg 0 UTC?

It is anybody out there?

A few of us lurk in the wings, but can't do anything about the problem except send another message to staff -- which I will do.

As to more-frequent runs: It used to be done but, given that CPDN uses its own credit technique and the script now takes so long to run, there are not enough hours in a day ...

Johan,

For what it's worth, my i7-4790 running four real and one of four hyper-threads, the machine runs similar CPDN tasks slower than my slower-rated i5-4670.

When the i7 was new, it was tested adding another hyper-thread "cpu" per test. Each additional "cpu" took a larger bite from processing rate than its preceding test -- an obvious non-linear curve when plotted.

Welcome aboard!

Operating System Linux
4.4.0-64-generic

Does that distro include 32-bit libraries? (They are required to run CPDN.)

See this post. (It is part of a long Thread on running on 64-bit Linux.)

Please check that 32-bit libs are installed.

Latest on current University-wide IT maintenance. From CPDN staff:

Hi All,

Update on this work: most of work has now been completed, however the cluster NFS service is still considered at risk. CPDN is the main user of this service. This service will be checked and tested tomorrow morning, so we will be keeping the project offline until this service is verified and considered to be not at risk.

With regards,

Andy

First -- Don't keep clicking 'update'. All that gets you is a refreshed backoff period, as you noticed.

Second -- no one is getting new work at the this time (except stray reissues of failed tasks). There is a chance there will be at least one new batch after Wednesday's maintenance.

Welcome to the boards and we hope you continue your support.

Hi, Joe,

Your machine has a large SSD. My understanding is that SSDs have a limited write-life -- and CPDN tasks write a lot of data to 'disk' over the course of a run. Perhaps the SSD's manufacturer has online technical data indicating write-life for your machine's unit.

Other participants' experience with SSDs invited.

Thanks, Les and Dave.

It seems' geophi's "sudo" one-liner is the best statement toward a solution -- if only the serial-crashers read the boards. 'Tis a pity it isn't done server side ...
