21) Message boards : Number crunching : Batch 742 (Message 58880)

Yes, a big problem. Mine all fail after about three minutes or, are aborted upon receipt (especially if they failed twice already).

Your choice.

Most of mine are a wee bit high: all boxes are Intel, Win10 (I'm ashamed to admit - [all were converted from Win7...]).

There was a small batch more than a month ago that was a bit under in its guesstimate. Later batches, already running, fit the usual mold, so I didn'tmake an issue of it.

I noticed that, too, and still have stuck downloads.

It makes me wonder when the count is decremented -- when marked for download or when download is successfully completed. It's a stretch but could it be that not all Batches are affected? We've seen stranger things over the years, eh?

I'll ask.

Yes, Les, me.

With current visual limitation, only this machine was checked. A PNW (Batch 757) task is hung on two downloads, with two more files waiting, on timeouts, in the queue.

If helpful the other boxes will be checked.

It seems there is an underlying assumption in your post that tasks will continue to successful completion.

If you have tasks which crash after days or weeks of processing and all credit is lost, how would you react? Some of the research examines the margins of possible atmospheres and might generate impossible conditions in that search. Trickles provide a way to salvage some/most of the credit for work done. (How do we address the furor arising from those situations?)

From CPDN staff:

Hi All,

We have just received notification that there will be some work done tomorrow on the virtual machine infrastructure that the main servers reside on. So we will need to take the project offline at 10am (UK time) tomorrow (Thursday) for one hour.

Best regards,

Andy
28) Message boards : Number crunching : Pending Credit NOT Used by climateprediction.net (Message 58695)

Post:
Incorrect interpretation. CPDN does not use 'Pending Credit' in its calculations. Credit is awarded when Trickles are received. Credit remains for work done even if the task errors.

The current credit update failure is related to a new procedure to speed the process. It will be resolved. Meanwhile Trickles are being received and credit will be posted daily when program bugs are eliminated.

No surprise that. The database is down and we're being supported on the backup database. Hence, not all functions are currently supported.

By the way, I have more than a hundred tasks run and uploaded -- all without credit updates. Frankly, I don't care about credits but am confident they will occur for everyone when problems are corrected. They always have been.

The topic is discussed, under obvious headings, in other threads.

At long last mine went 'home' last night (Time Zone Z-8).

At the moment, everything is stuck --> one of the promised database outages holds sway.

You've been lucky. Windows doesn't check for data transfers, so there is no guarantee that everything is saved. The error occurs during restart, when the restart set has date/time mismatch.

I get caught when Win10 restarts after updates and I'm not around to manage this new manifestation of corporate arrogance. (As far as M$ is concerned, only keyboard and/or mouse activity indicate 'activity'.)

I'm experiencing similar problems over the last half-day. I'm not yet aware of the problem(s).

Hang in with us. These things get sorted out sooner or later. (Servers are located around the globe and problems could be anywhere and of any type. [Curiously, I'm experiencing problems with EAS, SAS, EU, and NAM tasks -- currently, one task is uploading on each machine, albeit very slowly.])

Welcome to the project and the boards.

Not everyone has greater-than dual- or quad-core boxes. 'Percentage' covers the spectrum: BOINC easily does the arithmetic to produce desired result...
36) Questions and Answers : Preferences : No New Work (Message 57638)

There was a time all work was generated by in-house research at Oxford. L-O-N-G global models (they covered 140 years) starting about the time CPDN joined the then-new boinc. Now, work is generated by research teams around the globe, for their own region, and typically run for mere model-months. Oxford organizes, tests, releases, and coordinates everything, including credit, et al.

That is a long, historic, way of saying our work now tends to come in peaks and valleys -- peaks during research-university semesters and valleys between. I've been with the project since the 'Original Beta' and still consider it my primary interest, despite the sometimes wide 'valleys'. In the intervals, my machines are gladly offered to other worthy research.

Hang in with us, Aurum, we have much more to do. Who knows, the 'pick on your shoulder' might open an insight to a climate researcher's questions.

I don't have any from the affected batch. However, stuck uploads are experienced occasionally. It sometimes seems to take 'forever' but mine eventually go home.

This time, it may take until next school term begins...
38) Questions and Answers : Getting started : Very long deadline dates? (Message 57422)
Posted 1 Dec 2017 by Profile astroWX
Post:
Building on Iain's reply: In CPDN's early association with boinc (first non-Berkeley project in boinc) there were complaints aboout CPDN dominaing the resource. Hence, adjustments were made and a fictitious deadline.

Results are desired ASAP = the real deadline.

40) Message boards : Number crunching : Credit Status (Message 57212)
Posted 27 Oct 2017 by Profile astroWX
Post:
A moment of perspective, if you please.

I loathe weighing-in on anything to do with credits. I'll not bother to explain myself beyond questioning what possesses people to commit resources to a project, not for the stated goals of the project, but for an ephemeral, valueless credit (in a Capitalist system) baffles me.

What did you lose? I saw a complaint to two fractional digits. Wow! Credit loss to a hundredth of a credit! What a horror!

What did I 'lose'? Nothing, actually. It will be set aright. It ALWAYS has been. If interested in numbers (I had to check): My stats dropped from above 70,000,000 to less than 21,000,000. For any arithmetic-challenged readers, that is, ballpark (round numbers), fifty million. Say again, please, what did you "lose"? Nothing! It remains. It will show again,

So, do I care about my 'loss'? Not a whit! Even if I did care, I know from experience, that the folks at Oxford will sort it out when the important stuff is sorted. You lose nothing by hanging-in with what has always been true.

Hang in with with us... CPDN is an important project. Please read some (preferably, all) of the pages linked on the home page. It will surely focus your attention on the important stuff.

Forget 'credits', revel in our long history of cumulative accomplished science; revel in what YOU do to help protect the planet -- i.e., the important stuff. There is a lot!
