1) Message boards : Number crunching : How can I limit climateprediction to run only one task at a time? (Message 33623)

From the \"Your Account\" page click on the \"View or edit\" for General preferences. Then on the new page that loads you will find a setting for \"On multiprocessors, use at most\". Set this to only one and the second core won\'t get a work unit next time.

Look on your \"Your Account\" page for the Preferences click on General Preferences and then under the Processor Usage section, its the next to last item. If you have separate settings for Home, Work, etc., make sure you\'re changing the right one.

Then in your BOINC client, perform an update for the project and it will refresh your preferences to what you just changed.

I\'ve been running a T2500 with no problems for quite a while. Just make sure it stays cool and you shouldn\'t have any problems.

There is nothing unusual in the message tab ( i know, what i\'m talking about ;) ). The only unusual thing on that day was, it was the original deadline. Since then, the new deadline is january 8th 2008.

This is the result in question:
http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/result.php?resultid=5480755

Could your model be looping? While it is trickling, the link you provided doesn\'t show any new trickles since the 8th. If your model is looping and sending the same trickle over and over it won;t get credited.

Just my $.02 worth.
5) Questions and Answers : Windows : Is hadcm3trans_5.08... a keylogger? (Message 23813)
Posted 30 Jul 2006 by Profile old_user544
Post:
Same here. I\'ve used Spybot for a long time with no issues with it and BOINC.

But the symptoms you mention could either be a spy or keylogger. The only thing that may cause sluggishness from BOINC is if you don\'t have a very fast machine and have BOINC set to \"run always\". Mine are always set that way and I have seen no real effect since going over 800MHz on the processor speed. But processor intensive programs will feel it (like a large graphics program like Photoshop CE on a large file).

I run Spybot and it has never identified any boinc tasks as any kind of malware so it definatley sounds like a false positive.

Are you using the latest version of BOINC (5.2.13)? Try that if not. As a belt and braces approach, I\'d uninstall from control panel first (you won\'t lose your BOINC folder). And try the old fallback of rebooting. If you are still having problems, you could try searching the BOINC and SETI@Home boards as your problem is not unique. And tell us how you got on.

Unfortunately I have already made those attempts. I\'ll see what I can find on the other boards, but if this takes too long I may try ghosting the machine back to an image when it still worked.

Thanks for the help.

Edit - ADD: After looking on the SETI boards (http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=23265#197842 to be more precise) I read about firewall issues and found where Jens Seidler was listing general connection issues. Something clicked when he was talking about the differences between single/shared installs and service installs. I remembered that I once had loaded ths machine as a service and now it looked like boincmgr was expecting something else to launch boinc.

So I re-installed yet again but this time as a service and everything came right up. It\'s like somewhere a re-install as a shared install didn\'t change something in the windows registery and still expected it as a service. Why it ran the first time, I have no clue. The machine had been running for 3 months and still would have been if I hadn\'t decided to repartition another drive and re-install linux on it.

FWIW, this was on a W2K setup on an Athlon XP3200+ with 1G ram and more drive space than I know what to do with.

Been doing some hard drive cleanup on one of my machines and after a reboot it will not connect to the client. Looking at the task manager it doesn\'t look like it\'s even running (the client that is). Tried re-installing to to avail. BTW, the cleanup I was doing was on a completely different physical drive, so that should have no effect.

So how do I get things back to normal??

You can get 4.19 <a href=\"http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php\"> here</a> at Berkeley, and all versions <a href=\"http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/\"> here.</a>

There is a bug in 4.45, unofficially cured <a href=\"http://arnaudboinc.free.fr/\"> here.</a>

This is also reported to have been fixed in the soon to be released 5.1.2, as mentioned <a href=\"http://www.climateprediction.net/board/viewtopic.php?t=3253&start=15\"> here.</a>

Thanks for all of the replies. I already had the patch for 4.45 from earlier discussions. It seems to run fine on other machines, but I\'m not sure if they are running sulpher models since they are still back home.

I\'ll see if backing up to an earlier version cures what ails the machine that\'s with me.

You could try going back to an earlier version of BOINC.
This has worked for a lot of people.
4.19 is very stable, and I\'m using 4.25 without problems.
I\'ve heard that version 5 will be out soon, but it may have it\'s own problems.

Where can I get an older version of BOINC. I have them stored on a machine at home but hav been on the road th last 6 weeks. I\'m having issues with the sulfer cycle on 4.45 and would lik to try an older version. Stability tests all come back fine.

Update: Sorry about all of the words with a missing \"e\". That finger must be tired tonight.

I went through the same thing then saw here that it was a server prob. Thankfully it just uploaded today.

Looking back through the logs, there hasn't been a problem there since the server issues a while back. Nothing around the time this anomoly happened.

&gt; Sometimes a connection issue can cause a new host record to be created. You

As far as the connection issue you mention, are you talking about when it had trouble connecting to the local host?

Thanks

Post:
&gt; Did you upgrade your version of BOINC? Sometimes a large upgrade will change
&gt; the ID of the computer enough it thinks it is a new one. It looks like the
&gt; trickles under the new computer ID are being credited to your old computer
&gt; ID...i.e. the result is associated with the old ID, and it is the result that
&gt; is accumulating credits.
&gt;
&gt; You should be able to merge your old one into your new one, and hopefully, get
&gt; the credits aligned correctly.
&gt;

No upgrade, I'd been runngin this version for at least a couple of weeks. I did notice that the credits are going to the old ID. I may wait until this run is finished before merging.

Thanks

Is there some reason one of my machines would change itself to a new computer ID on its own?

I am running BOINC client 4.45 on an Athelon XP3200 running W2K. It gave me trouble yesterday and said it couldn\'t connect to the local host. Rebooted and everything seemed OK. But now I notice that it is sending trickles under a new ID. When looking at teh list of computers, I see 2 new instances of this machine (both IDs are sequential) and the one sendign trickles show no credit.

Is it reload time??

Thanks for the replies Egon and Andrew.

I guess I'm a little more like Andrew, I am little more old school where I like a book that I can be thumbing through and taking notes in. The help an dman files along with the how-to's online are all fine but sometimes you already have to know what you're looking for to get to the right one you need. The table of contents and indexes of books I find very useful ways of finding the info I need.

If anyone has any good books they recoomend, I would be greatly appreciative. Until then I'll be looking around O'Reilly.

Thanks,

Mark

While I've been using PCs for quite awhile, Linux is an area I am still a novice in. What would be a good book to learn all the finer points. I'm not looking for something to do the easy stuff, but more interested in things like configuring Samba and things like that. I'm not afraid to dive into config files if I have the right guidance.

Post:
For those of us who run a dual boot systems (W2K and RedHat9), is there a way to run the Linux command line version on the same work unit the W2K client was working on?

I run W2K most of the time, but would like to keep working on the current WU when I do boot into Linux. Don\'t run Linux enough yet to mak it worth while to have it\'s own WU.

I used to do this on S@H Classic and was wondering if it would be possible with this project.
