Hi all,

Great news! The phpBB board should be back up by the end of the week!

Sylvia has spoken to Open University, where they were being hosted before the hacking problems, and they are now happy to put the board back up again. The new release of phpBB fixes the problems with the older version, so they feel that it is now safe to put the board online.

We'll keep you all posted as things happen - you'll be the first to know when it's up!

Thanks again for your patience,

Hannah

Climateprediction.net WOWmugs are now available to buy from the University of Oxford Shop:
<a href="http://www.oushop.com/acatalog/Climateprediction_net.html">http://www.oushop.com/acatalog/Climateprediction_net.html</a>

Pour hot water in them and see the climateprediction.net design appear! The message around the top says "What will the climate be like in 2053?"

The mugs were designed and commissioned by participants, and special thanks go to Honza and Martin Sykes.

All the profits go to the project for communication purposes, which means another project open day may be on the horizon...

Hi,

Our new User of the Week is KeeperC!

<a href="http://www.climateprediction.net/user_week/user_of_week.php">http://www.climateprediction.net/user_week/user_of_week.php</a>

Note that the most recent trickle date is probably totally out of date now.

That's going to be the last User of the Week for a little while - I'm away on holiday in New Zealand soon, but User of the Week will return when I do in April :o)

Cheers,
Hannah

Hi Arnaud,

I think they're Windows Media Files, so it might be that Winamp can't play them.

Hi,

Well, I can now you give you an update on where we are with the phpBB.

Everyone here is really keen to get it back up, somewhere, somehow, *but* it's going to have to be hosted at one of the project's organisations: either here in Oxford, or at RAL.

It seems that the bugs in phpBB have been fixed, so as soon as we sort out a new machine and hosting, we'll import the database from the old forum and get it up and running for everyone to use on the new machine.

As you can imagine, this may take us a little while, and I can't guarantee you a date, so please, please be patient with us.

In summary, the phpBB forum *will* be back soon!

Thanks,
Hannah

Hi,

Just to update people about the situation with the phpBB. We're in daily discussions about what the best move to make is. It's become a difficult issue about server security and personal information, as I mentioned recently, but that doesn't mean that nothing is going to happen!

We really appreciate everyone's frustrations about the boards - both the phpBB and the BOINC forum are vital to the project, and we are very sorry if some participants feel the need to pull out of the project entirely because of these problems. We are working on a solution, and would very much appreciate your continued patience while we sort it out.

As always, the project could not exist without its participants, so thank you to everyone who's contributed computing power, and equally thank you to those who've helped create the climateprediction.net community.

Hi,

Sylvia's point about security and legal issues was specifically about the Data Protection Act. When you sign up to the phpBB forum, you give us your personal information, including your email address. The University of Oxford, where the project is based, is covered by the Data Protection Act, and we cannot give out that information to a third party without your consent. We take the protection of your personal information very seriously, and so it's very difficult for us to allow a server outside the University to host the old forum, as it is, with its database of names and email addresses.

We very much appreciate your offer, Beezlebub, and we don't want to sound like we're dimissing it, but I hope you can understand our predicament with regard to data protection.

We're still working on ways to get the old forum back up again, and we'll keep you posted as to any progress.

Many thanks,
Hannah

One of our project students, Nick Faull, has been interviewed (in French) about the project for a programme on climate change for Radio Canada.

You can listen to the programme from their website:

Actually, the wastefulness of disposable carrier bags is only one reason to resuse instead. The other is that it's a huge waste of resouces, namely the oil used to make plastics. Recycling is good, but reusing is even better because it doesn't use up anything to do, except perhaps, a little time and effort!

I think the EU are trying to make manufacturers be responsible for collecting the waste and disused equipment from their products:

http://europa.eu.int/comm/environment/waste/weee_index.htm

Of course, the EU website is so unclear, that I'm not sure if this is already law, or if it's going to be or what.

Still, I think giving companies an incentive like that might push them to make longer-lasting equipment, and wrap them up in less packaging. Otherwise, the economics of it encourages them to make stuff that needs replacing or upgrading as often as possible.

Incidentally, our local recycling plant accepts old computer bits which, I believe, they pass on to prisons, if they're usable, else pull apart and recycle if they're not. We finally got rid of a huge, broken, monitor recently, which has cleared loads of space from our spare room!

On a related note, one of my pet gripes is the number of plastic carrier bags we use in supermarkets. It seems so wasteful to use a bag once, then put it in a landfill, where it won't bio-degrade. At least the Co-op (being the Co-op) is using bio-degradable carrier bags now. Maybe we in the UK should try charging for carrier bags, like they do in Ireland, just a few pence, but enough that people decide it's worth reusing bags.
