41) Questions and Answers : Windows : Is my computer working uselessly? (Message 33958)

Your machine is crashing every result you have tried to crunch. The crashes are all the -107 crashes, which are usually hardware related.

I noticed you have a mobile CPU, is this a laptop? I also noticed it has a shared memory space for video, are you using the screen saver? Your machine has a light amount of memory for this project.

If you want to continue to do this projected, a few suggestions:
Do not use the BOINC / CPDN screen saver. Recommended use BLANK. Any of the screen savers on that machine are going to take up valuable resources and could cause crashes.

If a laptop, get it off the \"desk\". If you can use something to raise it a little and allow it to \"breath\" more, or better yet buy a laptop cooler. Make sure all the airflow spots are free of dust.

If you continue to crash models, then your may want to start doing some intensive testing of your machine. Like memtest86+ and Prime95 are a couple good testers.

I just noticed your speeds are low for that machine... it is having issues. Make sure you do some of the above cleaning / testing.

Good luck, and know that not all machines can handle CPDN.

That is a Windows issue during the screen saver.

To make your changes, you need to show graphics and do your changes, those changes will then show during the screen saver.

Although, the screen saver does take up computing time. Most people get a lot faster processing time without the screen saver being used.

I have had no issue in switching accounts installed as a service. I heard if people use the user one and has one logged in and fast switch to another use without a total logout then there are issues.

BOINC is 2 parts, the client, which downloads, runs the programs that process the data, uploads and reports and the manager, which is the GUI. Those two programs talk via tcp/ip on localhost. This is what you are seeing. If you have ZoneAlarm ignore localhost this will stop. If you installed as a service you can also stop the GUI and only use it when you need it.

My dimming memory tells me that one of the researchers (Dave Frame?) posted several years ago that some failures can be more valuable than some successful Runs.

That said, however, it\'s more satisfying to complete a Model; for me, the longer the Model, the greater the satisfaction.

Science, all about the trials, failures, errors, mistakes and successes. How would we even know success without some of the others.

Having done less than you, but a significant amount myself, I still feel that sense of accomplishment whenever a task finishes. I am now dabbling in the Beta project, with 200 year models. Talk about a long crunching time. My C2D T7200 says it will take upwards 145 days to do nonstop. The 2.4G Xeon will take around 260 days. Lots of patience needed there, cause they have already crashed a bunch with bad parameters, etc.

All in a cruncher\'s days work.

Congrats! Feels good to finish one, huh?

Some of us have finished a few dozen successfully. It still feels good to finish them.

If it were feasible (problem is CPDN uses Fortran, so it\'s impossible to make calls to the GPU), don\'t you think most of the projects would have done so by now?

Just reviewing all the errors on the ones done on your account, and they all seem to have the 107xxxxxxxxxx error. This is usually a hardware error of some type. As explained by others, it can mean bad shutdown, bad video, etc. But there may be other issues.

I see you are using Vista, and you upgraded to SP 1. Vista is an animal in of itself. Recommendation is not to install in the Program Files directory. I see you are getting errors that suggest it is in this area. Please stop BOINC, go into add / remove programs and remove. Then make a directory specific for BOINC (I made a whole My Programs area where I install all my programs that will allow me to). Copy your BOINC folder and all subdirectories into this new area (or you can just copy them to the root C:\\BOINC). Then download and install BOINC over this new folder. See if this helps some of your issues.

Other concerns with this error is overclocking (or other processor issues), memory issues, etc.

I would do the Vista fix first. If you still get errors then I would do some hardware testing.

This is a Windows question???

If you read in the Number Crunching forum Trickles Not Showing, you\'d see that the server had room issues, they are moving stuff and it\'s taking a while (it takes a lot of bandwidth). When they are comfortable with the move, they will start the trickle adding and exporting up (which also takes a lot of bandwidth). Plus there is one of the main project people off on holiday, which makes things even tougher when you have a small amount of people working for a project.

I believe that I completed WU 6119163 on 8th Feb, but the Server State is In Progress and the Outcome Unknown. Do I need to kick something?

Some of the servers are still behind from the outage, so relax a couple of days, have a cold one (or 6, or ...), and check back.

There were several servers that got low on space, and that was why there was an outage. They moved some of the data and got the servers back up, but are still working on getting more data moved, which takes a lot of background time and bandwidth. Once they are at a comfortable level of move, they will turn the trickle crediting process back on (which also takes a lot of background time and bandwidth and why it is only run once a day).

I guess I will call this a milestone. I have retired a few older computers, by placing them in needed homes with school aged children. Alas, another machine (my 4th) is being retired from crunching and going to a home with 3 children who need it badly. The current computer they have is a old P2-300Mhz. I am giving them my P4 2.8Ghz. They really need it for school and stuff. Mom is divorce, and disabled. She has had 3 back surgeries and 1 neck surgery. Kids do a lot for mom, but they can not afford much.

The other 3 machines one went to a family with 4 children, 2 of school age, one starting next year one just a little tyke. Dad has had a rough time of things, but is a hard worker. He has a steady job and insurance and keeps the family fed and stuff, but no extra $ for fluff. He got my P4 1.5G Xeon Workstation. Really works well for them. The P4 1.8G went to a single dad with a school aged boy. Mom passed on, and dad has it rough with taking care of this little guy. He\'s a handful and has a hard time cause he needs a real flexible job. So he has been through a few. The last of the 3 was an older P4, somewhere around 1.4G and I donated that to a family through a school. All I know is it was two grade school kids and they were also on rough times, as one had to go through cancer care. The kid was still surviving and nearly complete with treatment when I donated it. They were about 90% sure the cleared this child of the disease. I have not heard anything since.

I hope to replace it sometime after tax season with a Core2Duo or Quad (depending on the prices and what I get back).

Anyone else donate their boxes to needy families and then upgrade because of it? Let\'s hear your stories.

Crediting did happen last night. I thought I saw it flatlined for about 3 days in a row, but I am not as sure as I was. This major winter weather we had over the past couple of days must have also gotten into my head and all I was seeing was the same snow over and over. (-:

They know about the trickle problems and should be fixed in the next 24-48 hours.

Keep going, that\'s a BOINC setting, not a CPDN setting. CPDN wants them in if they finish, no matter what the WU says on the webpage.
