Nice to know. Unfortunately, the 1.08 drivers have a bug that limits the Parhelia 128R 4xAGP to 64MB instead of 128MB, so that's really not an option. I guess I'll postpone reinstalling BOINC until new Matrox drivers come out.

That works for a maximum of three different settings. Some of us have WAY more machines than that, and I'd think that those of us that do are probably the kind of people that the projects really would want joining...

The problem with this is that it's a global setting, which doesn't help much when you have multiple machines with different number of CPUs.

Yeah, you can edit the XML files (you have to, if running Linux), but they get fetched/generated again. Apart from the unique client identifier, prefs should really be local and not global.

I described what happens when right-clicking the progress line of a work unit being processed, and you recommend right-clicking the progress line of a work unit that is being processed? RTFP.

5) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : NIS/NFS machines (Message 8698)

Is there a way to set up BOINC to work for machines in a "diskless" NIS/NFS environment? If starting the client on one machine, the prefs get written with host specific data for that machine, without being written to a host specific configuration file.

Do I really have to use an extra install directory for each and every host, and set the rc script to do something like "cd /path/to/boinc-$HOSTNAME && /path/to/boinc-binary"? That seems like an awful lot of waste, considering that most of the installation will get duplicated on all machines, and that each client by default wants 100GB (I know, it can be adjusted, but still!)

Also, the boinc client doesn't appear to obey signal handling correctly. When running attached to a tty, a HUP signal should terminate the client (like if started from a remote terminal that then goes away). Instead, the client continues running, feeding output to a non-existing tty.

Is there any way to limit the BOINC client to only use one CPU when it detects more than one? With a HT enabled CPU, it's counter-productive to have the same work running on both hyperthreads (It's useful when the work being done use different parts of the CPU, but not when it taxes the same part of the CPU).
Can I tell BOINC to only use one (pseudo-)CPU instead of running two in parallel?

Also, when running on different machines, BOINC doesn't seem to let me have different preferences for each machine. If I want to run one machine only when idle for 3 minutes, and another only when idle for 10 minutes, there doesn't seem to be a way to do this?

If starting the BOINC screen saver, the displays go black, and the machine becomes unresponsive, and doesn't even accept CTRL-ALT-DEL (although it still will answer to pings). I have to hit the reset button to get out of this one.

If right-clicking a work unit and choosing "Show graphics", nothing happens.
Correction: Nothing <B>appears</B> to happen, but 45 minutes later(!), a DOS window named hadsm3 appears, without content, and then Windows freezes, just like when running the screen saver. Yes, 45 minutes later.

Basic machine specs:
P4 3.06HT, 512MB RIMM4200 RDRAM
Matrox Parhelia 512 128R gfx card, using dual head
Windows 2000 pro, HT enabled

Yes, the graphics card does OpenGL, and is 100% OpenGL 1.3 compliant.

Instability problems like these are bad enough that I have to uninstall the client, and let my three fetched work units go to waste until they're picked up again by someone else in June.
