22) Message boards : Number crunching : still don't get credits since last breakdown (Message 47028)
Posted 12 Sep 2013 by 3rkko
Post:
The credits are an acknowledgement by the project to the volunteers that they have contributed to the scientific research. Its like the project scientists clicking the like button to show that you have done a good job.

This project has been a black hole for over a month now! If you don't get your act together soon, I'll switch to other projects.
23) Message boards : Number crunching : Complete, but still running. (Message 46054)

The last trickle is at 75% time-step. The model must have crashed at one of those "sensitive" 25,50,75% steps but still somehow continued even though it was no longer doing any usefull work.

Three crashes
hadcm3n_3af0_1980_40_008349704_2
hadcm3n_49r8_1980_40_008350067_1
hadcm3n_3jf5_1980_40_008352170_0
with the same "(C++ Exception) (0xe06d7363) at address 0x7732C41F".
25) Message boards : Number crunching : Sound playback choppy with all cores crunching. (Message 45685)
Posted 22 Mar 2013 by 3rkko
Post:
I had a sound clipping issue with my previous computer when both cpu and gpu were crunching. (That was AMD Windows.) Pausing gpu crunching solved that problem. Even though Boinc is supposed to behave nicely it doesnt always seem to do so. With my current computer (Intel Windows) I dont have any issues with cpu or gpu.
26) Message boards : Number crunching : "Project has no tasks available" (Message 45077)

Any news on more tasks would be welcome. In the mean time I'll let the various projects at WCG to get more than a fair share of my cores. :)
27) Message boards : Number crunching : HadCM3N crashing at first trickle (Message 43237)

The latest batch of HadCM3N is crashing when trying to create the first trickle.

28) Message boards : Number crunching : after 504 hours, I got 'computation error'.. can this be fixed? (Message 43162)
Posted 8 Oct 2011 by 3rkko
Post:
That model has sent all 40 trickles, the last one is from timestep 1,036,800 , so it must have crashed during postprocessing stage. Unfortunately nothing can be done about it, unless you have a backup.

30) Message boards : Number crunching : deadline too short for these models ? (Message 42457)
Posted 24 Jun 2011 by 3rkko
Post:
The cpdn needs the results of the third batch by mid-August, so the deadline doesn’t seem too short at all, quite the contrary actually! You can get a much better estimate of the actual total run time by dividing the elapsed time by the percentage done, eg. 11.9 h / 0.408 % = 2900 hours, but you'll get a better estimate when your runtime gets longer.
31) Message boards : Number crunching : CPDN Credit Not Getting Out? (Message 42456)
Posted 24 Jun 2011 by 3rkko
Post:
I would understand the lack of updates on the external stats sites if the credits were not calculated in the first place. However, as we can see on Boinc Manager’s Statistics tab, the credits are actually calculated almost every day. Is it really so difficult to put the credits file available for the third party stats sites?

I know that you have a science-based deadline at mid-August for the third batch of CM3N, so you should only send work to computers that can meet your requirements, or to send it to so many that at least some would meet the deadline.
32) Message boards : Number crunching : CPDN Credit Not Getting Out? (Message 42452)
Posted 23 Jun 2011 by 3rkko
Post:
If you only need fast machines, then you should set that as a requirement. For example, WCG sends certain tasks only to "fast and reliable" machines, where fast means short turnaround time, and reliable that the last N tasks were returned without errors.
33) Message boards : Number crunching : How many total timesteps are the hadcm3n? (Message 42185)
Posted 17 May 2011 by 3rkko
Post:
That model type trickles once per model year and it's a 40 year model. You are trickling once per day so it's going to take 40 days to finnish it.
34) Message boards : Number crunching : HadCM3 Full Resolution model low credits (Message 42097)
Posted 3 May 2011 by 3rkko
Post:
There is something wrong with the Recent Average Credit. I am currently only crunching HadCM3N models and I have been steadily generating about 2500 credits per day. However, according to CPDN, my RAC is only 1300. It dropped there from 2500 when I switched to CM3N models.

35) Message boards : Number crunching : Upload problems (Message 42027)
Posted 26 Apr 2011 by 3rkko
Post:
Did you make sure that the Boinc Client was not running? The command "sudo /etc/init.d/boinc-client status" tells you whether the Client is running or not. You can stop or start it by replacing status with "stop" or "start". This works in Ubuntu and should be something similar in other flavours of Linux.
36) Message boards : Number crunching : HadCM3 Full Resolution model low credits (Message 41982)

The credit issue seems to be fixed now, I got +21,000 credits today. Thank you.
37) Message boards : Number crunching : HadCM3 Full Resolution model low credits (Message 41920)
Posted 6 Apr 2011 by 3rkko
Post:
I noticed that my RAC was dropping and then found out that the new HadCM3 Full Resolution model gives about four times less credit/hour compared to other cpdn models. Do other users see the same low credit for this model? Not that credits matter, but it would be nice if they were in line with the other models.
38) Message boards : Number crunching : [topic]HadCM3L (Message 41872)

I am getting download errors on this new batch of Hadcm3L models. I saw a post in News thread about some problem with these models but apparently it has not yet been fixed.
39) Message boards : Number crunching : Can't upload for 12 days (Message 41727)

If it's of any help, BoincStats shows 1,503,116 credits and CPDN 1,510,255 credits.

40) Message boards : Number crunching : TRICKLE CANNOT UPLOAD, BUT, SERVER SHOWS IT ALREADY HAS (Message 41516)
Posted 21 Jan 2011 by 3rkko
Post:
Trickles and zip files are two different things. A trickle is just a small piece of data that lets the server know the model is still alive. A zip file is several megabytes of scientific data the model has generated. They usually go to different servers so you may be able to trickle but not upload zips.
