1) Questions and Answers : Windows : Problems logging in to my account (Message 14918)
Posted 4 Aug 2005 by Profile old_user46548
Post:
When I try to log into my account, I paste the code in, and click Login, but it always rejects my account details.

A couple of days ago, I went down the \"Forgotten account\" route and had it sent again. When I copy & pasted that string (same as I had been trying) it worked. But today, it fails.

Also, is cannot remember my login, even though cookies are enabled.

What is happening?

> Is step 2b clear enough about what is a model in progress, what is a finished
> full run and what is a finished short run?
>
> If not, please do ask before doing anything.
>
> Alternatively you can look at your account, find the result and look for
> whether the phase 3 timestep 259248 trickle is present.

Absolutely spot on. Many thanks.

> Have you tried exiting BOINC and restarting it?
>
> Also with 496MB in BOINC, are there any short runs that can be deleted or full
> runs than can be written to CD and deleted?
>
> (BTW the maths looks a lot more sensible if you put a negative in front of the
> 73 and 163, so maybe exit & restarting BOINC with one of those setting.)

Yes, that got it going again. Thanks.

One more question, "short runs or full runs" Where can I see that?

> How about
> Use no more than 30 GB
> Leave at least .1 GB
> Use no more than 99% of total space
> or something like that?
> All three may affect whether it thinks you have enough space.
>
>
That is very close to what I ended up with, but I changed it to your suggestion anyway.

It still wants 73Mb. I have 1.1 Gb free now that I have turned off hibernation.

What bugs me is how when the Leave at laest figure goes down, the amount needed can go either up or down. Wierd!
5) Questions and Answers : Windows : BOINC Manager has lost all items in the Work tab after reboot (Message 14543)

> Thanks for your input on this, and if you'll have me then I'll even join your
> team !
>
> As for BOINC: well, that'll teach me! But to be honest, I can't be the only
> one this has happened to, and it's a poor result all in all. How many
> teracycles of CPU have gone down the tubes I wonder.
>
> I'd set BOINC so that it idles when "user is active", but that obviously isn't
> enough to close the application tidily.
>
> Fatuous Question: what's the opposite of "bullet-proof"?
> Answer: BOINC.
>
> :-(
>
I sort of appreciate and echo your sentiments, however, we chose to get involved in this, to commit our time(not much, really) and resources(what else were you doing with it?), so we really can't complain too much.

If there was some sort of concrete reward for our contribution, then you would definately have a point. But there isn't (unless I missed something?), so maybe we should just try to improve the engine.

BTW, I just lost a couple of weeks worth of work on one machine. Now I have to wait a bit longer to get to my target ranking in the stats. :-(

My two Eurocents worth.

I have started getting messages like this:

So I took the advice and canged the preferences from \"Leave at least\" from 0.2Gb to 0.1Gb. Updated the project in Boinc, and it came back with a message saying that it needed an additional 73Mb of disk space.

That\'s right: I told it to leave LESS space, but it asked for MORE!
Leave 0.2Gb wanted 27MB
Leave 0.1Gb wanted 73Mb.

Tried a few more options but cannot get it restarted.
Leave 0.01 wanted 163Mb
Leave 1Gb, wanted 827Mb

Boinc is using 496Mb and there is 1.5Gb available.

Help!
7) Questions and Answers : Preferences : \"Show Graphics\" display not working properly (Message 8142)

> Check your power settings in control panel. Your monitor may switch off after
> a few hours. Set it to never.
>
That does not seem to answer the question - if this was the problem, then how would he know that it was still working properly?

I have the same problem on ONE of three machines that I am running. The other 2 pop up the screensaver and graphics just fine. I set the power options to turn the screen off after 1 hour, but that never kicks in on any of the 3 computers.

So the question is still outstanding.
