What kind of radiation, UV? or radio active

&gt; Yes. For more about the visualisation see <a> href="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=1859"&gt;this
&gt; thread</a>.

Many thanks, I hadn't realised that the results were for the work my PC is doing, I thought they were for the whole project.

incidentally, every now and then the words "Radiation Period. . ." appear on above the text at the bottom of the graphics.

What does that mean?

Yes, and I get "Show Graphics" and it gives me a globe with colour patterns on for Temp, Pressure, Rainfall etc

Are these the results that my PC is creating?

I know this may be a dumb question but. . .

My PC has been crunching away for seevral days, trickling stuff back and I'm sure this small contribution is worthwhile but how do I get to see the results, in some meaningful way?

How do I know what my machine is calculating?

&gt; &gt;
&gt;
&gt; One CPU, though, is wrongly described as a Pentium. That is enough to stop the
&gt; software from merging them.
&gt;

Oh OK, thanks very much for your help

I hope someone manages to run the work unit associated with 95992 since I can't

&gt; Your 2 computers have different CPU names, they will not be mergable.

&gt; Hello and welcome!
&gt;
&gt; It should work this way: Go to your newer <a> href="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/show_host_detail.php?hostid=102101"&gt;puter
&gt; in tyour account.</a>
&gt; There should be a link at the bottom of the 'Computer Information' stuff that
&gt; says: 'merge this computer'.
&gt; You get a selection of similar computers on your account (which in your caes
&gt; should be quite small;-).
&gt; Select the other and click on [Merge hosts].
&gt;
&gt; They have to be really the same puters, at least to the system here, but it
&gt; looks as if on your <a> href="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/hosts_user.php?userid=44969"&gt;list.</a>
&gt;
&gt; <b>edit:</b>

I'm confused, aren't both computers called "tim-j5x20he64ai"?
&gt; Sorry, just read Johns post, and had a closer look. He seems to be right.
&gt; Although it's obviously the same puter, Boinc named it in different ways. So
&gt; now you can brag about your second machine with your pals;-)

I seem to have registred my computer twice

they are 95992 (which isn' doing anything) and 102101, which is.

Is it necessary for me to merge them back into one (102101?).

I have tried but the page where you are supposed to select the computers to merge doesn't have any entries

Just for interest, doing "file -&gt; exit" on the GUI when the application has been running for just a few minutes works so maybe theres a problem that builds up if the thing is left to run for a day or two?

I had something very similar to this. I'm blaming it on the drivers for the video card. In my case, the PC froze after about 10mins which was when the screen saver would have started.

Having tried lots of things (processor tests etc) I found that the drivers for the video card were not up to date. I downloaded a new version and it has run fine ever since (I now can't stop it but that's another matter)

I would be intrested to know what you get when you run "dxdiag" and go to the video tab to see if Directx is enabled.

Hope this helps

My computer - 102101 - has been churning away flat out for a day or so (mainly because I can't stop the process, there's another message on this subject)

It has completed some work about 10 hours ago, but my credit rating is still 0.

How do i know if the results got back?

I've tried everything suggested elsewhere in these boards. I've used suspend, exit, suspend then exit from the system tray and from the BOINC menu but still this process keeps going.

When you use suspend from the BOINC File menu you get a message saying "suspending computation and network activity - user request" and it stays there and the processing does not stop

Infact it enters a strange state, when you look at the job status on the work tab, its says Suspended(running)

I guess I can't just kill it

I'm going to get some more bread to make toast with my hot processor

How do I stop this thing before I run out of bread?

This is the thing.

I'm guessing that the screen saver uses directx (direct draw or direct3d or somesuch)

My graphics driver was out of date and didn't have the windows hardare quality driver thing (WHQ?) DirectX DISABLES things like direct draw.

I downloaded new drivers, installed them, DirectX automatically re-enabled itself and everything works fine now, apart from uploading results and credits and having two computers when there is only one.

Guys,

Thanks for these hints and tips

The processor is a 1GHz Athlan running at ~0.9 - 1GHz so I guess it isn't over clocked

It has been running non-stop for about three days but not at 100%. The fans are working

I downloaded and ran a CPU tester from zdnet which just ran for about 30mins (5 mins CPU heat up, 2 mins whetstone, 4 mins whetstone, 8 mins whetstone, 2 mins mmx , 2 mins whetstone etc) NO ERRORS

There is no screen saver, the PC just switches the monitor off after 15 mins of no user activity

Does BOINC interact with other running apps such as Apache or MySQL?

&gt; Hi there and welcome aboard,
&gt;
&gt; is your computer overclocked?
&gt; I would also check if cooling (e.g. fan on CPU) is properly working.
&gt; It therre that there is a stability and/or overheating problem.
&gt; Running some diagnostic apps and stability test may help to detect the cause
&gt; of problem...
&gt;

How do I find out if my computer is overclocked?
All of the fans are going OK

I downloaded the climate prediction thing, started it off and it ran for about 5 minutes then it locked up the machine completely, only way to restart was to hit the reset button

this is a 1GHz Athlon, 768MB RAM running Win2K Prof

Why should it stop?
