1) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : Incorrect memory message from server (Message 33660)
Posted 3 May 2008 by old_user431158
Post:
I just downloaded the 64 bit version of the slab model (hadsm3) to my Linux box.

There was a message in red from the server:

\"Message from server, Your computer has 972.16MB of memory, and job requires 1464.84MB.\"

The job started running OK and the \"top\" command tells me the job is using 106 MB of virtual and 46 MB of resident memory. It therefore looks to me as if the server is asking for ten times more memory than is actually needed, which for those of us with small machines is rather discouraging.

If I\'m correct is it possible for someone to put things right?

Thanks everyone for the replies.

\"With the old version I was getting around 1.7 s/ts, but with the slower (and more careful) versions (5.40 and upwards) it is about 2.0 s/ts.\"

Sorry, will you explain this, I don\'t understand.

\"My (XP SP2) PC is overclocked to around 2560MHz, and the memory is DDR500 with T1 timings. Many people have noticed that running two (or four, on quads) climate models is slower than running one climate model and something else. This is because the climate models require considerable memory bandwidth.\"

Is your Athlon the pre-AM2 version with DDR memory rather than DDR2? Which one?

Are your 1.7 and 2.0 s/TS figs. with just one hadsm3 running?

Thanks,

Richard

Is anyone out there running climateprediction on an Athlon X2 4800, 2500 MHz. with 2x512 k cache?

Having run hadcm3 on a Sempron 3400 for over a year I\'ve just upgraded to the faster Athlon X2 and two slab model instances (hadsm3fub) have arrived for me to run.

I\'m still using my old slow 533 MHz memory and possibly because of this the s/TS per core goes up significantly when I run two models, one on each core.

With one model on one core I get about 2.02 s/TS whereas with two on two cores I get about 2.32 s/TS on each, about 15% slower.

I wonder if anyone with the same processor running this model could let me know what memory they have what s/TS they are getting? This would enable me to estimate they effect of faster memory.

I\'m using Linux 2.6.22 but Windows figures would also help.

My processor is the G2 Brisbane core but figures for the earlier cores (larger cache, slower clock) would help too.

Many thanks,

Richard Driscoll
4) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : Strange behaviour in statistics (Message 31595)

Thanks for that Mike.

I wonder if it is my fault.

I shut the process down after I\'d seen the \"Scheduler RPC Succeeded Message\" in the messages window but wonder if this appears before the files have been uploaded. In other words the \"succeeded\" just means that the request to upload has been granted, not that the upload has been successful. Certainly in stdout.txt it looks as if the zip file is built after the RPC succeeded message is logged.

Do you know if this is the case? If it is then the program would have needed another shot at sending the trickle message when I restarted it.

5) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : Strange behaviour in statistics (Message 31593)

Post:
Usually the statistics graph on my model shows a steady increase with trickles about every three days. Over the last few days this has changed with two successive trickles showing no increase on two occasions:-

27 Nov 29300
28 Nov. 29550
30 Nov. 29550
1 Dec. 29800
4 Dec. 29800

These numbers seem to agree roughly with the trickle records on the Web page.

Is this normal?

Many thanks.

6) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : sec/TS (Message 27523)

No doubt others will correct me if I\'m wrong but my understanding is as follows:
Assuming that you started with a new model and didn\'t pick one up part way through, then the model simulates 160 years from 1920 to 2080. There are 72 timesteps per model day so the total number of timesteps is 160 * 365.25 * 72 = 4207680.
Your machine is taking 4.81 s/TS so your model will take 4207680*4.81 seconds in total or roughly 234 days assuming the machine is on all the time.

You should be able to confirm this from the BOINC manager which should show the time taken so far and the time to go, both in hours.

Your percentage and elapsed CPU time seem to tie in with mine allowing for the differences in s/TS.

There is some more about this on the FAQ under:

1.3.2 \"So how long do these Trickles take and what are: a Model, a Phase, a Trickle and a Timestep?\"

7) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : suse 10.2 and boinc, does not work (Message 26768)
Posted 13 Feb 2007 by old_user431158
Post:
I am using Suse 10.2 (not the 64 bit version) with an AMD Sempron 3400. The only real trouble I have is viewing the Web pages via the BOINC manager (see my recent post).

Perhaps if you were more specific I could be of some help:

1. Is the BOINC manager window present?

2. If so and you click on the tasks tab does the status heading say \"running\"?

Don\'t worry about stuff in the terminal window when you start the manager, such things are not uncommon!

8) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : BOINC Manager complains about BROWSER environment variable (Message 26763)
Posted 13 Feb 2007 by old_user431158

But the \"about\" tab tells me I am running 5.8.8 so surely I need something like 5.8.11 don\'t I.

Should I get this from UCB?

Thanks,

Richard
9) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : BOINC Manager complains about BROWSER environment variable (Message 26756)
Posted 12 Feb 2007 by old_user431158
Post:
I got BOINC running about one hour ago, however I have a problem in that whenever I click on any of the Web site links I get a pop-up box telling me:
.......
http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/quick_faq.php
but couldn\'t find a web browser.
To fix this, set the environment variable
BROWSER to the path of your web browser,
then restart the BOINC Manager.
--------
The xterm used to start the manager displays:
20:23:13: Error: No default application can open .html extension
--------

However the environment variable BROWSER is set to /usr/bin/firefox:

rjd@dart:~/BOINC> echo $BROWSER
/usr/bin/firefox

A couple of times the manager has locked up and won\'t respond though the model continues to run.

Any clues .....
Thanks,
Richard
