How does this compare? :On a WIN10 laptop XPS14
Four wah2_eu25 WUs,
wah2_eu25_Odbv.....etc 86.316% progress @ 12d 04:14:06
three others range from 83.6% to 85.7% same elapsed time.
Question: do trickles show up during progress or only on upload of finished WU, and are there graphics associated with these tasks?

Thanks for the information.
I have four smallish wah2 tasks running on Win10, approx 32% progress without incident thus far. Windows upgrading has not been an issue but that may change when MS unleashes Windows 10 Redstone (whatever that is) which was reported in CDNet "How to get started with Ubuntu and Bash in Windows 10", in April.
MS does not hesitate to muscle in on any venture which provides even a hint of either income or acquisition, and it seems they are alarmed by Linux. In the Anniversary Update to which you referred, MS introduces Ubuntu and Bash for Win10. I am adequately confused by the proliferations of "distros" and cross-platform stuff, and have no intention of investigating anything beyond what is necessary to carry on in Linux to learn Python coding and installing CPDN.
This all started when i was trying to find a replacement for Win XP whose demise was very destructive for my interest in these things.
How are you surviving in the degenerative climatic conditions in the Pacific Northwest?

Thank you Dave and Les:
I am still ensnared in the Wine ratsnest which arrived with the LinuxMint17.3 download package. The configuration settings did not include Win10, and so I listed Win XP which I had just recently trashed. Les has been successful with this route so I will try again.
The Wine Intro says Wine "allows one to cleanly integrate Windows applications into your desktop".
Oh, really?
But one must read everything, no intuitions permitted, and one finds that merely downloading the latest iteration over an existing Wine install is the equivalent of spilling a glass of Yellowtail red onto the keyboard.
I will try this again and report on the progress.

Hello Les:
I am returning to CPDN after a long hiatus, and have been searching the boards for advice on the reliability of Win10, and the procedures for installing on Linux (Mint 17.3)
Your comment here that recent tasks are Windows-centric indicates that Linux may not be a good choice.
Win10 has its frustrations, and I was hoping to extend my expertise in Linux Mint with this adventure into CPDN. However, the only tasks which are downloading for me (on DELL XPS14, Win10) are the WAH2s.
You abandoned windows a while back, but what advice do you have about Linux if there limitations on the tasks available?

Neat. Thanks AstroWX. I will track down a more comparable data point.
But I will never know everything about these workings. Entertaining mysteries.
P.S. That "important stuff" URL reaches into some pretty ancient MikeMars history (2006..?)

Any hurricanes up your way this year?

Right on Ron. The credit assignment to my performance is so haywire that I have suggested that credits be assigned to those crunchers who ask for them.
Par example, I shut down for a disk massage recently, following completion of a Famous model; upgraded to BOINC 58, rebooted, and the credits rate fell off the screen. Was I worried? nada.
It appears to me that Milo would enjoy better weekends and more sleep if credits were restricted to the hotshots.
But perhaps even that doesn't make sense. Consider this: my RAC ranges about 260-275, on my Thinkpad oldtimer; mo.v today shows RAC about 40 for 3 pretty fast machines. (Apples and Oranges?) So,where is the comparability and who gives a damn?

John, it would be a good idea for you to look at the README post about generic error codes like #22 to see whether there\'s anything you should be doing or not doing:

Will do that. I think I need to look at a lot more than error codes because I could never pass an exam on this stuff.

mo.v,Les, et al:

I think this may be the approriate venue for my comments.

In February my computer completed a model and I took that opportunity to upgrade to V.510.10.45.
Problems arose immediately, and I lost my original record of completions, a new number was assigned to my computer and task completions became very erratic.
I had recently installed Windows Live OneCare and was accusing Bill Gates of all sorts of interference with BOINC. But I have since determined that he is not to blame, as there were no conflicts in timing of OneCare activity and CPDN requirements.
The comments in this thread indicate that I am not alone in lack of comprehension of BOINC\'s operations and terminology. It is not intuitively clear in many respects, so that when error messages show up in the Manager, I am inclined to say \"OK so what now?\".
I am struggling to find the correct settings which would avoid premature completions or what may even be crashes, and have considered reverting to earlier versions of BOINC.
You may be able to recognize some errors in settings or procedures in the following message copied from Manager today.

jehop

Iain, mo.v and Les:

Your helpful replies are ackowledged and thank you for the assistance.
My investigations indicate that the crash occurred because of a \"perfect storm\" of repeated power failures, antivirus program interference, and automated defragmentation during a file transfer.
Individually, none of these would bother post-4.xx versions of BOINC, which appear to be very fault-tolerant. But there are limits.
My old G40 is quite capable but, like its owner,a plodder. I tend to leave it alone, perhaps too much.

Les: Good luck with the quad core and the weather. We will be watching. If things get too hot, come on up to NS, where you will be perpetually wet. Thanks for the simple backup/restore procedure.

mo.v: your comment re Error 22 and \"SUCCESS\" makes me (and probably many others) feel some relief about the missing \"SUCCESS\" on apparently completed models. And,I will make better use of the README\'S in future. The G40 should be crunching faster, but I don\'t know how to accelerate the process. As Les says, things aren\'t as simple as they were 20 (light)years ago.

Iain: 6563560 was restored and should finish, but without \"SUCCESS\". I have not been able to figure out where all the models on my results page come from.

I hit the enter button before completing my message.

I replaced a WU from a \"Les Bayliss\" type backup, and it is not clear at all whether this model is behaving properly.
Note the other computers (not mine) shown in the list under \"WORKUNITS\".
How did they get into this system?
The WU appears to be plodding along garnering credits, but that\'s not what some of the report functions indicate.
Anyway, not to panic.

Almost 50& complete readu fro another backup, unless you decide there is a problem,

Les has picked up an important feature re firewalls (i.e. Security settings) when moving from LAN to another wireless connection.
In my situation, the connection information page for NETGEAR shows \"STATUS, CONFIGURATION, SECURITY ,ETC.\' and you will probably have a similar page available for the Celeron connector. (icon in the task tray)
Under \"SECURITY\", NETGEAR instructs as follows:
\"Please assure that the settings on this page match those in the Access Point or other stations, otherwise you will not be able to establish a wireless connection\"
I hope you can find something analogous to this in your setup procedure.
You may also need to use a \"Passphrase\" to connect to wireless when switching from a LAN.

Matt:

You may have lit on one component of the answer to this quandary; Are you watching NOAA?

I recently contacted csc@csc.noaa.gov

My message:

"Hello:
Excellent presentation. Very impressuive work.
Canadians may recognize some of the early characterisitics of 2005 DENNIS. Does this one appear to have any resemblance to 1954 HAZEL which put on such a great show 50 years ago?
e.g. early strength, tenacity and track, AND DEVASTATION?

( as indicatred below, I expect to receive an answer soon, which could indicate that DENNIS, et sequel, could easily make 1954 HAZEL look like a summer breeze.)

My observations of current situations tracked by NOAA have been a very entertaining adjunct to CPDN. I have been trying (to no avail) to relate the visualizations of successful BOINC/CPDN models to the NOAA tracking.
But the evidence is frightening.

Steve:
The servers have been very busy playing catchup on last week's outages.
Poke around in the other message boards and you will get an idea of what is happening.
I believe that many of us are experiencing the "failed" attempts, but the situation resolves itself eventually. (several hours to several days???)
