I believe it is due to the rather large L2 cache on the pentium-m. Athlons have 256kB (or 512kB on some models) while pentium-m have 2MB. I think this makes the difference. Furthermore, the athlon is rated at \"2100\" which is roughly 1.7GHz. The rating is to compare with the pentium4 which while it has a high clock speed, actually does less than most CPUs per clock tick. The pentium-m is based on the pentiumpro arch and is fairly effective per clock tick. The feeling out on the net is that pentium-m really does perform well on large number crunching applications due to the large cache.
