1) Message boards : Number crunching : Credit on some but not all trickles (Message 12196)
Posted 1 May 2005 by old_user412
Post:
If you check the result ID 786718, you'll see that your computer has uploaded 8 trickles for that result, and that you have got the correct amount of credit for 8 trickles. Why they don't show on your main stats page, I don't know, although there seem to have problems lately with trickles not being generated on all the stats pages.

2) Message boards : Number crunching : Model Finished&Uploaded, Server claims Outcome "unknown"? (Message 11148)
Posted 19 Mar 2005 by old_user412
Post:
Yes, I've had this workunit <a href="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/result.php?resultid=1757">http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/result.php?resultid=1757</a> stuck in a similar situation since last November.
The server claims to have received the result in Sept when the model crashed. But I managed to restart it from a backup and crunch it till the end. All the trickles went through and the end of model files all uploaded sucessfully, but the server still says Outcome Unknown!

3) Message boards : Number crunching : Why doesn\'t BOINC work? (Message 8904)
Posted 8 Feb 2005 by old_user412
Post:
&gt; 3) I don’t know the version of BOINC that was installed, but it is whatever
&gt; was available for download a week ago. I am running XP with all upgrades.
&gt; This problem does not occur with any other software installed on my computer.
You can check your version of BOINC by clicking on Help -&gt; About in the BOINC window. The latest version is 4.19 and is now available on the download page. If you have an older version, it may be worth installing 4.19 - just suspend and exit BOINC and install it over your existing version.

4) Message boards : Number crunching : BOINC 4.19 (Message 7796)
Posted 27 Jan 2005 by old_user412
Post:
I upgraded from 4.13 to 4.19 yesterday and so far everything is running very smoothly. No problems with "major version change". It just ran a benchmark after upgrading then continued to crunch normally. The only minor hiccup I had was that the install program put a shortcut in the All Users Start Programs, and I'd previously moved it from there to the Owners Start Programs, so when I rebooted the computer it tried to start BOINC twice. But it recovered from that with no problems. I removed one of the shortcuts and now everything is running fine. I'm using Windows XP SP2.
Hope this encourages more people to take the plunge!

There was also an item about CPDN on BBC News at 6:00pm today ( but without actually mentioning it by name) The BBC News website carries the same article in more detail, citing the work that ClimatePrediction.net is doing. See http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4210629.stm for details. This hopefully might generate a big jump in new participants.

6) Message boards : Number crunching : Results Temporarly Disabled? (Message 6371)

Post:
I don't know how long they're going to be disabled for either - but if you click on a Result ID under Latest Trickles on Your Account page, it will show that results details, so you will be able to see the graphs, etc for the WU you have just completed.

Have you checked that the CPU is not over-heating. I believe Pentium 4's "throttle back" if they get too hot. Maybe worth checking that the fan &amp; heatsink are relatively dust-free.

8) Message boards : Number crunching : CPDN credits compared with SETI and LHC (Message 5796)
Posted 31 Oct 2004 by old_user412
Post:
I am running CPDN along with Seti and LHC on an AMD Athlon XP 2000+ computer. Each trickle on CPDN takes almost exactly 12 cpu hours, so for each hour's trickling I'm getting 6.25 credits (75/12). When I look at my stats on SETI and LHC each CPU hour is worth around 10 credits. Maybe the figure of 0.007 credits/timestep needs to be adjusted! 0.01 perhaps!

9) Questions and Answers : Windows : Arrrggghhh Carl - error during final results upload, again... :-( (Message 4319)

&gt;hopefully it's the last we've seen of these "surprises!"
Maybe not Carl! Sorry to throw a spanner in the works, but I'm still running a Beta model sent out on 7th August (01cs_000026741) using hadsm3 version 4.02. I think you were discussing runs that were sent just after 26th Aug.
My client_state.xml file is exactly as Nick described with the 1.zip file set to 1000000.000000 and the rest set at 5000000.000000.
So is there another batch of runs with this problem? And should I edit the client_state.xml file as you described?

10) Questions and Answers : Windows : BOINC GUI Diagnostic Error (Message 4245)
Posted 17 Sep 2004 by old_user412
Post:
&gt; This sounds like it could be a permissions issue like BOINC cannot create the
&gt; output log-file because the permissions on the machine are preventing it from
&gt; doing so.
&gt;
&gt; I have not got XP Home edition here, but have XP Pro. Do you have a number of
&gt; user accounts on the machine? If so is the one you are loggin in as a
&gt; restricted user?

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the info.
I think I've solved the problem. I had manually added Boinc_gui to the Startup folder (I just use the owner account on the machine), then I found it was already in the Common Startup folder. I've disabled the one in the Startup folder and everything seems to be working fine now,

11) Questions and Answers : Windows : BOINC GUI Diagnostic Error (Message 4092)

Post:
I am getting the following error each time I reboot the computer.

<img src="http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/pcbitsandbytes/boincerrormsg.jpg">

Clicking on OK clears the error message and BOINC (4.05) then appears to run normally.
I am running Windows XP SP2 Home edition and have Boinc in the Startup folder.
Anybody got any ideas?
Thanks, Red Squirrel
12) Message boards : Number crunching : equivalency not correct (Message 2171)
Posted 30 Aug 2004 by old_user412
Post:
&gt; Hey,
&gt;
&gt; on my profile the page says this for the modelyears i have completed:
&gt;
&gt; CPDN classic credit equivalency 58072.53
&gt; equivalent HadSM3 Model-Years 480.10
&gt;
&gt; but if i look on the old page it says 174.528
&gt; That's not even close!
&gt;
&gt; Is the whole credit system based on this? Cause otherwise it's easy to obtain
&gt; lots of credits in this project for less calculation work.
&gt;
&gt; I once read you use 0.004 cr/timestep. It looks like it's not realy correct
&gt; then.

Hi,
Try going into Your Account and Edit ClimatePrediction.net Preferences. Put your original user name in the appropriate box - it will probably be blank at the moment! Then wait for the next 4-hourly update of the stats. This sorted my stats out! There's a thread about it on the original forum under Participation in the experiment - 1st Announcement by Carl,
Hope this helps,

13) Message boards : Number crunching : Exiting CPDN...??? (Message 1042)
Posted 16 Aug 2004 by old_user412
Post:
&gt; When I first installed CPDN v4.02 &amp; started running it after about 10
&gt; min's I exited the Program &amp; when I started it back up it downloaded 2
&gt; more WU's to run. Well I've been running them ever since without exiting the
&gt; Program because I'm afraid too for fear of the same thing happening.
&gt;
&gt; Is it possible to exit without the loss of work &amp; new WU's being
&gt; downloaded...Is there a save state file that starts the program from where you
&gt; left off from or do you just have to start over each time you exit the
&gt; program.
&gt;
&gt; As long as it takes to run one of the CPDN WU's there definitely should be one
&gt; because 6-7 weeks is a long time without having to reboot or shut your
&gt; computer off for one reason or another I think anyway...

The model is saved after every 144 timesteps i.e. every 3 model days. This happens about every 10 mins on my machine. Maybe when you first exited the model after 10 mins, you hadn't quite reached the first save point. Looking at the stats in your sig, you're well into the WU now so there should be no problem exiting the model and shutting down your computer. Hope this helps.

Hi gskoczylas,
I have almost the identical setup to you and it's reporting the same deadline and hours to complete. It's about 40 days running 24/7 and that's about what it took running the "classic" Climate Prediction model.

&gt; &gt; Carl, i found a little problem!
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt; I was doing some rebooting while my pc was trickling and now the same
&gt; trickle
&gt; &gt; is reported and credited 3 times!
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt; Time Sent (UTC) Phase Timestep CPU Time (sec) Average
&gt; &gt; 09 Aug 2004 16:22:52 1 10802 25517 2.3622477319015
&gt; &gt; 09 Aug 2004 16:19:35 1 10802 25517 2.3622477319015
&gt; &gt; 09 Aug 2004 16:17:22 1 10802 25511 2.3616922792076
&gt; &gt;
&gt; &gt; (dunno if it's credited three times you'll have to lookup yourself :D)
&gt; &gt;
&gt;
&gt; OK, I'll check tomorrow -- I think the way I did the stats it's OK since I
&gt; check max phase/timestep so even if you came in with three 1/10802 trickles
&gt; the "differential" is 0 added to the totals, but we'll see tomorrow.
&gt;
&gt;
&gt;
Hi Carl,
I can confirm that this is a problem with the stats! I had been running the model and was waiting for it to do a trickle at TS 21604. It had saved the model at TS 21600 (144 * 150) ** Why aren't trickles sychronised with 144 timestep boundaries when model is saved to hard drive!! ** After the model trickled, I checked the stats and my credit was ~ 150 ( the correct figure I think ). I then shut down the computer. A few hours later I restarted the computer and the model restarted at TS 21600. When it reached TS 21604 the model trickled again and when I checked my stats, the credit had jumped to ~ 226 from 150 in just 4 timesteps! When I start again in the morning I'll be up to ~ 300 credits. Easy way to get to the top of the leader board!!
Apart from this little buglet, the stats are looking good!
BTW would it be possible for you to set my credits to the correct figure - I don't want the same hassle as certain other people have had in the past!

This also seems to happen when running the model as a screensaver, even when the monitor is set to power off when not in use. I ran it as a screensaver overnight for 10 hours with monitor maually switched off and only got about 5 hours of CPU time used!
