I have resolved my problem.
The Icon I referred to was the desktop icon by which I formerly launched the BOINC manager.
Somehow it became degraded such that it only loaded boinc.exe, filling the screen with the MS-DOS type of message summary.
When I returned to windows via ctrl-alt-del the hadsm3fub task was restarted, as shown by Process Explorer (procexp.exe).
Eventually I decided to re-install the lot via boinc_5.10.20_windows_intelx86.exe
and that has re-created my access to the boinc manager interface. I now have identical icons, one loading boinc.exe and the newer one loading boincmgr.exe
During the interval my task completion has risen to 38%!

Since switching from BBC I have been running one of Oxford\'s relatively lightweight tasks: after a few days the user interface vanished - all I get when clicking the BOINC icon is a MS-DOS type black-and-white version of the message board.
I found I could get back from the DOS interface to the Windows desktop via ctrl-alt-del, but I would like to be able to UPDATE and see how far the task has got, for which I need the BOINC user interface restored - but HOW?

Hi again

I can\'t get through to your BBC project results pages. Could you please look in your boinc/BBC manager messages tab and tell us your computer ID number for the BBC project. It will be in about line 7.

Thanks. ID=177214
I haven\'t got a half-recent backup!
I stopped occasional backups during the third experiment, stability seemd so good. Plus, I was reasoning that it should be as easy for HQ to start me half way through as to start me at the beginning.
