1) Message boards : Number crunching : When are trickles credited (Message 26134)

I\'d let it cycle through once more, just to make absolutely sure, but yes, it does look like you\'re going to have to kill it.
(...)
If it\'s looping, the model has produced a lot of scientific information which has uploaded to the servers, and your 1800 hours has produced dividends, but there\'s no point in it continuing further if the model has started to drift out of reality.
I had a closer look into the long term log. The model cycled at least 7 times through the same year since 8th january. So i decided to abort the unit and immediately got a new one.

Thanks everybody for the helpful posts. :D

I\'m trying to answer all questions:

The Computer was cut off from the net over the holidays and was crunching away. On january 2nd it uploaded the big bunch of trickles piled up over the holidays.

The BOINC version is 5.7.5.

Just now it trickled again, here is the log:

...
17.01.2007 13:06:08|climateprediction.net|Sending scheduler request: To send trickle-up message
17.01.2007 13:06:08|climateprediction.net|(not requesting new work or reporting completed tasks)
17.01.2007 13:06:27|climateprediction.net|Scheduler RPC succeeded [server version 507]
...

Maybe i have really a looping model, just found the following in the long term log:

...
2007-01-10 22:01:19 [climateprediction.net] Resuming task hadcm3lbm_4f8c_05162505_1 using hadcm3lb version 508
2007-01-10 23:44:10 [climateprediction.net] Task hadcm3lbm_4f8c_05162505_1 exited with zero status but no \'finished\' file
2007-01-10 23:44:10 [climateprediction.net] If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project.

...

Just saw it was going back from >78% to 77,757% done. :(
I think, i should abort this unit with >1800 hrs work done?

There is nothing unusual in the message tab ( i know, what i\'m talking about ;) ). The only unusual thing on that day was, it was the original deadline. Since then, the new deadline is january 8th 2008.

This is the result in question:

Well, since january 9th i haven\'t got a single credit - although my machine is nice trickling away. Anything wrong with the granting mechanisms for credits?

I\'m not worried for the credits but for the science values...

Hello folks,

another model got trashed by a BOINC \'upgrade\':

Sorry about that, but it\'s not my fault.
Could someone please free this WU for another participant?

Ok, pages look much better now, even \'latest trickles\' on the \'my account\'-page, but something starts to worry me: There are at least 3 trickles missing now for me :/ Last trickles came through on September, 9th.

Meanwhile i uploaded a 4th trickle and it is recognized by the server. Since it is now &gt;12 hrs since i uploaded the first 3 trickles, i start to ask myself: If the script is run twice a day, it must be run every 12 hrs. So now more than 12 hours have passed and still no credit, so something went wrong again and still no announcement of anything. I know, i am annoying, but, sorry, i am annoyed also and i think after so many weeks of being patient i can grant the right, to be annoyed to myself... :|

@crandles: Thanks, that sounds reasonable. I remember carl posted something about a repair script running twice a day.

@Blank: I didn't ask for the usual blabla, but some people are limited and just have to answer that way.

Hello there,

i uploaded 3 trickles at 9:22 this morning. They are displayed in my account but until now (Should i say as usual?) no credit granted. Is this issue (after <b>weeks of disasters!</b>) finally solved or not. Please give a reasonable answer and not this usual blabla...

&gt; I am with Thyme Lawn on this. Delayed credits is far less serious than
&gt; stopping people downloading new models and stopping people joining the
&gt; project. (If the science was being affected then I would agree with you Ulrich
&gt; but I see no reason to think the science is affected.)

I want to believe ;) that science isn't affected, but not seeing the data graphs from the missing trickles i can't do that. I may reconsider this, <b>if, and only if</b> my models make it to the server and i really <b>see</b> the graph, <b>not 1 second before</b>. My trust in this project is deepliest convulsed now.

&gt; There was a problem of lack of information from the team between 15th and 20th
&gt; but since then we have had quite a lot of messages coming out keeping us
&gt; informed. We could wish for more and better consistency of information in news
&gt; section and the real position. However, I am sure it was believed the servers
&gt; were up when they posted that and it was just unfortunate timing. Also, we
&gt; will always be wanting more and better information. So I don't accept that
&gt; they put their head in the sand.

If the communication to the community is already bad, then they should additionally consider improving communication among themselves.

&gt; Would you want SETI to stop sending out work units just because a validator
&gt; was going to build up a large backlog before clearing it? Clearly SETI doesn't
&gt; do that and neither should CPDN.

You can't compare CPDN and SETI in that condition. Loosing a SETI unit is 2-5 hrs wasted. Loosing a CPDN model is <b>much much</b> more damage to science and crunchers dedication. Have you, by chance, seen how Einstein managed their last shipwreck? They immediately stopped distribution and <b>informed</b> the people about the disaster and <b>even said 'Thank you'</b> (edit: <a href="http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/forum_thread.php?id=2414#14607">Link to Bruce Allen's Post</a> ) to the people showing the mistake instead of calling them crybabies. It was the problem, that Windoze ignores lower-/uppercase differences in file names. I will rest my comments for now and crunch on with much lower percentage to CPDN. Let's see, how this evolves. <b>No harm meant!</b>

Ok, i made their job and calculated from my results page, here is the result:
I'm missing 850,67 credits which results in 9 trickles missing. Shouldn't be that difficult to calculate with a script, i needed 2 minutes using my browser and the calculator. A script would have done that in milliseconds...
[edit] Just another trickle sent, make that 10 trickles and 945,19 credits missing...

&gt; The only way they could have been stopped clients from reporting would have
&gt; been by shutting down the scheduler. Which would have stopped people from
&gt; registering or downloading new results (and probably generated even more
&gt; complaints).

Which actually would have been the absolute right way, because people <b>know and understand</b> that at times projects are not available if it is properly announced.
But a message on the frontpage stating the project is not available would surely not have been a good advertising match for <a href="http://www.climateprediction.net/newsb.php?id=2">that</a>
Instead they put the head in the sand and let the people run into the open knife. That's <b>my</b> point of view. Comments welcome...

&gt; ...
&gt; Absolutely ;)

Hopefully ;)

&gt; Hmm. Looking at
&gt; http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/result.php?resultid=625133
&gt;
&gt; shows granted credit 5293 which is correct for 56 trickles. I saw that happen
&gt; a little while before my credits jumped. Maybe the next update to the stats?
&gt;
That's ok, but in my account and in the BOINC manager my credit didn't change since 19th june. This really sucks. First they let the servers go wild instead of shutting down and stopping clients from reporting and additionally ruining the credits with their sloppiness :/
I hope at least the science value is preserved...

No, i sent 3 trickles today at 9:48 UTC, they recorded at around 12:00 UTC. Until now (16:35 UTC) there is no granted credit. I still have the same credit since 19th of june. As stated, trickles go through, but no credit or model data is displayed.
