"BOINC starts multiple OpenIFS tasks because there are free CPU slots, even though the total memory for the tasks exceeds what's available. "

Can this be overcome by limiting the number of cores available to BOINC before downloading any of the IFS models? Allthough I have a four core CPU the box only has 24Gb of RAM.

Assuming you can still get BOINC up and running then detatch from CPDN, leave it several minutes then re-attatch. That should then mark them as abandoned and the tasks can be re-issued quickly. Otherwise they would have to wait until the "target" date is reached - which is some months down the line.

That's what I had in mind too: if a machine returns say 5 tasks in a row as errors, blacklist it or at least restrict it to no more than 1 task a day until it can return completed tasks. Could something like that be automated with the existing BOINC server software?

Would it be possible to interrogate the task data - total tasks and errors - and blacklist machines that have greater than a certain percentage of errors?

Oops! Looking back I think I had actually used lib32 in my original attempt to update the libs. Libs32 in my post is a typo! Next time I boot that machine I will try the other variants, but the tasks seemed to work OK anyway without that update.

Upgrade worked fine but couldn't find libs32stdc++-8-dev to install. Last 2 tasks completed OK. Now shutdown to conserve power (big bills) and waiting for new work.

Thanks for the info on the cores front.

Badges could be interesting - task types, credits and years on project come to mind.

We will be testing higher resolutions so expect to see tasks with significant memory requirements and multiple cores, roughly 10Gb, 20Gb & 30Gb RAM with 2, 3 & 4 cores. We know there are still 1000s of machines that can *potentially* run these, the idea is to see what's workable and what isn't in order to offer scientists the best scientific capability possible. Hoping for feedback on these.

Comments welcome.

Cheers, Glenn

p.s. at 25 pages, I wonder if it's time to close this thread and start a new one?

Just wondering how my machine with 4 cores and 24Gb will fit with these. Will we still be able to limit the number of processors (cores) for the tasks?

Thanks. I'll let a couple more tasks finish then do the upgrade. At most I'll lose a couple of tasks.

A new version of UBUNTU (22.04 Jammy Jellyfish) is apparently available. Any ideas as to which libraries will be required (before i upgrade and find its not working!)?

[quote]I am assuming that these incomplete tasks will now sit on the server until there expiry date which is November this year.

I vaguely remember somebody saying that if you detatch from the project and then re-attatch that the task gets marked as abandoned and will therefore be issued sooner than the twelve month cutoff date. But I may be wrong :(.

From memory when I installed BOINC on Ubuntu 20.xx I used from the terminal screen

sudo apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager

rather than the package install. No apparent problems.

Just to clarify that installed 7.16.6. I couldn't get the package manager to work which is why I did it this way.

hadam4h? I have looked up applications. This "h" seems to be new. Predicted days to completion, 103 days. Any ideas? Whatever it will be fun.

Batch 932, hadam4 at N216 resolution if it helps. 5 month runs. 103 days is very high - mine are taking about 16 (i5 processor).

"Somehow I got the idea that he keeps his files on a file server, and it has been reorganized, or it has just been moved to a file server, or moved from a file server to somewhere else, so the boinc client cannot find any of the files. I do not remember where I got that idea, so I certainly could be wrong."

That could be something I said in an earlier post. The file structure that is giving the error is fairly typical of the centrally based file systems that institutions use so that users can access their files from any computer within a certain group. It could just be a permissions problem but more likely that the BOINC client hasn't been set up to see that folder as the default location. I expect the event log would make interesting reading.

Plus another 2 one of which has failed 3 times before - libraries in one case file system in the other 2 (Science United and two anonymous users).

Query: Should anonymous users be allowed?

Should there be (or is there) a mechanism to block machines that have frequent failures?
