My "basement computer" is a 2010 MacBook Pro 13", and it's gotten two of the HadCM3 tasks in the past two weeks... Guess I'm just lucky?
2) Message boards : Number crunching : Are ~month turnaround times on N216 WUs still useful? (Message 63715)

Sounds like an interesting setup, do you have documentation of it anywhere?

Are any other projects doing this? Seems a bit odd, though I know there are also users who get angry when they're told that their stats will live on forever since it's the Internet, and it's hard to make things really disappear, especially when there are mirrors and stats sites that keep it separately from the projects.

I think one of the great things about grid computing, is that everyone's contribution is a drop in the bucket... You may not show much in terms of statistics, but there are a lot of other "small guys" out there whom the projects couldn't continue without. One of the advantages of grid computing, is that it (in theory) the projects are doing it because they can't afford large computing clusters--and there's no reason or expectation that the users have such hardware either. In fact, one could make the argument that users with large, dedicated clusters actually decreases the efficiency of the effort because they are not truly making use of "spare" computing power.
5) Message boards : Number crunching : CPDN and BOINC Stats (Message 55218)

Do we really need new members. Right now we have all the people we need to run all the work the project provides.

Regardless of their reasons for crunching (making money vs altruism) having more crunchers accomplishes the project's goals in a more timely fashion. And, considering that BOINC in general has been suffering from a declining user base, I'm okay with providing an incentive for new users even if I would not do the same (crunching for profit).
6) Message boards : Cafe CPDN : Tasks in progress (Message 53213)

So noderaser how do you manage to get more tasks than CPU cores? Where can one set such a preference?

I don't, I just try to get on task per core on those machines which are used less often. Unfortunately, that can be pretty hard due to the nature of the project and the low flow of tasks.

I know the long deadlines must be rough for the researchers as well, it's certainly a long waiting game for results. I think a deadline of even six months would work for my purposes, if that ended up being the new deadline.

in fact I also have 3 tasks in progress that has been aborted or otherwise cancelled and no longer crunched, but will die out in 2016 and one in 2023.

Is that a typo? I thought the deadlines for the longest tasks were one year out...?

I must admit, when I can get CPDN units on my less-often-used computers, I eat up a few units there because they're not on frequently enough to get tasks back to projects that have 1-2 week deadlines. But, a year is usually more than enough :P Hope I'm not causing too much trouble there.

Less than 5,000 credits over two years? I think you need to take a look at your preferences!

Machine has a video card with 384 CUDA core so kind of odd package would take that long being only thing running on the box.

CPDN doesn't have any GPU work, everything runs on a single core of your CPU. IMHO, multi-threaded apps would be nice but I doubt they'll be making any major changes mid-experiment.

I don't want people with fedoras, dark glasses, and turned up collars coming around and asking me what I'm up to.

I don't the the Fedoras are standard issue anymore, unless you live in a Noir film.

There are checkpoints in there somewhere, but they are spaced kind of far apart. Due to the long computation times, CPDN is not really optimal for hosts that are shut down/restarted frequently.
12) Questions and Answers : Windows : Pending Credit (Message 50701)
Posted 1 Nov 2014 by noderaser
Post:
Hi, Pending credit is not actually used by CPDN and is I think a meaningless number generated by BOINC.

It is quite relevant, and important, for projects that need to use multiple replications of a task for verification/quorum purposes.
13) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : OS X Yosemite (Message 50682)

It seems like there have been some growing pains between BOINC and the latest couple of OS X versions, so I can't say that I am at all surprised. Personally, I'm still on Mountain Lion--and don't really have any plans to upgrade unless there is some compelling reason such as software compatibility, etc. I don't feel there are enough significant differences/advantages to warrant an upgrade with the different OS X versions even though they are free.

Of three users on my team, only one (debco33) lost any points; 1,306 according to BOINCstats.

On a positive note, this is probably the first time I've seen our team position increase by around 250 places when our daily credit is negative!
