23/07/2010 07:31:09 | climateprediction.net | Message from project server: Invalid app version description

Well, at least it's not the client doing it. The message comes from the project server, whose sched_types version may be older and not quite up-to-date to what the newer clients are doing.

Solution for the user?

If you aren't an alpha tester, do not use the alpha releases of BOINC (6.odd number is always development !!) and return to the latest recommended version of 6.10.

If you are an alpha tester, report this behaviour to the BOINC Alpha email list.

I fully accept that I am to blame for using a BOINC Alpha client.

Unfortunately there are always going to be users like me, who do not know enough to be an Alpha Tester but at the same time who want to try out the latest and greatest version of BOINC (ready or not), and then we get confused when something "apparently goes wrong".

Sorry :(

astropulse and astropulse_v5 are obsolete, (by at least a year) and have been replaced by astropulse_v505, they are the source of the 'Invalid app version'

If you grab the latest 0.36 Lunatics installer you can upgrade the apps to the latest versions.

Am I running an obsolete CPDN work unit, or something silmilar?

I'll set to No New Work' and either Reset or Detach/Attach (if I remember), and see if the messages go away. This message is on CPDN only (so far as I have noticed).

My Computer details are here

Is there anything I should be concerned about, or do?

Cheers

Good news. May there be many more completions. (Do you make regular boinc folder backups?)

Thanks AstroWX,

Unfortunately I\'m far too lazy - I like to Set It And Forget It as far as BOINC goes.

It is only because CPDN does Trickles that has allowed me to persevere and still believe I\'m helping Climate Science in my own small way.

I don\'t believe it!

I have successfully completed my first CPDN Work Unit (of any variant) since I started back in 15/Nov/2004.

hadsm3fub_k48k_005970279_1

It can only be due to having a newer computer where the Mean Time Between Failures of Windows is actually greater than the Mean Time To Complete a Work Unit.

Team ACC has reached 1MC (1 million credits), and I\'d like to thank all Team members (past and present) for helping to achieve this: Thanks!!!

And to potential new members, please help us reach the next milestone 1 Billion Credits (1BC), contributing to science along the way.

I think we have all done very well, we should be proud of ourselves.

These aren\'t just \'credits\', but they represent actual real work that our computers have done in the name of science.

We are doing our little part to make a better future, and that can\'t be bad.

Well done to all.

I really enjoyed the presentations. Well done to all involved. It gave me an insight into cpdn and the cpdn team, it made it more real - more of a human feel to the project rather than yet another web site, and a program running in the background.

On the downside: I wasn\'t particularly bothered with the video quality, but it would have helped with a bit more audio clarity - can this cleaned up?

Congratulations on the virtual Open Day, I hope to see more in the near future, and I also hope that you can encourage other projects to do something similar.

I have definately returned more valid results.

> It's explained here.
>

****************************
From Carl:

I took a look at the database, it seems there are about 500 records with a userid but no hostid in the results table (or vice versa), and 1000 records with a hostid and no userid. The host table has a 192 records with no userid, so that helped propagate this problem.

I assume these were probably botched merges, i.e. merges done when the database was having trouble (I'm really starting to hate mysql -- oracle was much more stable). so it probably deleted the host record OK but couldn't update the (overworked) result table. There's not really much more to do, fixing credits always turns out to be a futile effort and I probably shouldn't have bothered this time! You fix credits for 1000 people and it messes it up for 1000 more....
****************************

Bugger, so I've lost nearly 2500 credits (if I've read it correctly)?

In the past day I've noticed that my credit has gone down from roughly 2931 to 567 (according to Boinc Manager).

Is this to do with the outage earlier on today or a bug in BoincManager?

Will I get my credit back?
(The science is the most important, but I'd like my bragging rights restored please)

Anyone know what happened?

Boinc 4.45, WinXP SP2
BOINC installed as a service though recently installed BoincView

19) Message boards : Cafe CPDN : Why slow down Fossil Fuel consumption? (Message 14355)
Posted 14 Jul 2005 by Profile old_user30015
Post:
> Okay, so, we've all heard the talk: we should cut down on fossil fuel
> consumption because it causes environmental damage, it's toxic, it accumulates
> in human habitats and is having an effect on the overall warming of the world.
> Plus, we only have a limited supply of it, so, stretch it out as long as we
> can.
>
> Why?
>
> One of the main reasons we don't have more use of other sources of energy is
> because petroleum-based fuels still exist in reasonable quantities and (for
> now) are still affordable (until China and India REALLY get going).
>
> So, I'm changing my car in a way that I would encourage all of you to do. No,
> I'm not buying a hybrid or a smart car, but an original 1972 Cadillac ElDorado
> with the V-8 engine that got 10 gallons to the mile. If more of us continued
> to drive classic cars like this (though, I admit, a modern SUV is a good
> second choice) then we'll have global oil reserves depleted by February and
> can finally concentrate on renewable, cleaner energy sources!
>
> Who's with me?

I'm with you (though perhaps not all the way).

China, India, Brazil, et al need to be industrialized to bring them into the 21st century and to try to minimize (and hopefully eradicate) poverty. There is relative poverty in the G8 countries but it is still (generally) a better quality of life than than living in poverty in a third world country.

I say we should continue to use fossil fuels until something better comes along.

I like the idea of developing the technology to be able to use water or vegetable oil as fuels. Growing vegetables I think would be quite good for both being a replenishable (re)source and for extracting carbon from the atmosphere, hell why not grow vegetables in desert areas to aid in the greening of the planet.

Any body have better ideas?
