PC reset & lost data
(Message 11179)
Posted 20 Mar 2005 by old_user295 Post: The cause might be listed in any of the files in the BOINC folder: stdout.txt, stderr.txt, stdout.old, stderr.old. I suggest you back them up (alog with, say, client state XMLs) before re-running BOINC. What does the BOINC client say? Has it reseted the projects? If so, there's probably not much to do... Except learn from the experience and backup the entire BOINC folder regularly (I know, it happened to me, too) |

State file has different major version (0.00); resetting projects
(Message 7384)

As I understand, CPDN is pretty disc-intensive anyway, so there's a quite high probability of something going wrong. I wonder if anybody developing BOINC is aware of the problem... > I've had two power failures due to lightning activity, both only a second or > two, which caused the > computer to re-boot, and a power outage of 1.5 hours, which left me in the > dark. > When the power was restored, my computer powered up OK, as did BOINC / CP. The Windows machine crashed sometimes, but I never lost work. If I ever feel sadistic, I'm going to see if random pulled-the-computer-power-cord-out-of-the-socket accidents cause BOINC to reset. > You may need to do a human initiated backup now and then if power failures are > a "feature" in your area. Hindsight is 20/20 :) :( |

Isn't it a stupid way to lose _a lot_ of work? I blame BOINC for not using an appropiate backup system |

Problems with BOINC 4.09 on Windows XP
(Message 4786)
Posted 29 Sep 2004 by old_user295 Post: >Unfortunately, through all of this trouble shooting, I ended up reseting my >work for climateprediction and lost 128 hours of work. :( There should have been no reason to do a project reset, and BOINC doesn't automatically do one unless you change the major version of the core client (BOINC 3.x -> 4.x) >In case it matters, I'm running a P4 HT 3GHz with 1GB RAM with a Radeon 9800 >Pro video card. I also have BOINC 4.09 on a Windows XP SP2 machine with Radeon 9200SE, and I get no screen flickering, and no problems processing in idle mode (98+% CPU). >I looked at client_state.xml and there is an odd line in it which may be a >symptom. Here are the first few lines in the section up to the odd one: >{project} >{master_url}http://climateprediction.net/{/master_url} >{project_name}climateprediction.net{/project_name} >{share_size}0.000000{/share_size} >{size}-7307860.000000{/size} >I noticed that in properly working installations, the "size" is 0.000000. I'm >going to try just changing that one line to see what happens. I also have a "<share_size>0.000000</share_size>" line in my client_state.xml and all's fine. >I checked running processes, saw hadsm3um_4.03_w (50%), hadsm3_4.03_win (0%), > boinc_gui (12%). The GUI is using WAY too much CPU time. The "disk" tab is known to use some extra CPU, but still, it's strange. I would suggest updating your project preferences ( http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/prefs.php?subset=global and http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/prefs.php?subset=project ), reinstalling BOINC 4.09, running the benchmarks, and doing a project update for all the attached projects on the machine. My guess is the problem has nothing to do with you hardware or OS. Are there any suspect messages listed in the messages tab of the boinc_gui application? |

Core client upgrade? (4.05 -> 4.09)
(Message 4701)
Posted 27 Sep 2004 by old_user295 Post: I see there\'s an upgraded version available for the BOINC CC on the SETI@home server: http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/download.php I\'m currently 326 hours into a CPDN workunit. If I upgrade from 4.05 to 4.09, is BOINC going to do a \"reset project\" for cp.net? Or should I just wait until I finish processing the climateprediction.net WU? |
