Strange thing about this is that the menu on the front page works without javascript, so why can\'t menus on the rest of the site do it?

Well, I\'ve tried that on Windows XP and although BOINC runs, the graphics button is grayed out.

Try ticking the \'interact with desktop\' box instead or as well.
Also, remember to stop and restart the BOINC service afterwards for the changes to take effect.

Ps: I often forget to highlight the workunit before clicking \'Show Graphics\', that will also leave the button greyed out :)

Edit: spelling and added PS

Hi, in this reply in the \'Getting Started\' Q&A forum, Ananas said that some of the functions in the BOINC PHP got moved to different include files, and CPDN hadn\'t updated the source yet.

That was on the 20th of August though.

PS: I like the option for off-line avatars as well, like on the CPDN Commmunity Space.

As Samuel said, Einstein has a nasty habit of sending BOINC into panic mode. If you want to run CPDN for a few days, manually suspend Einstein using BOINC Manager, or set Einstein not to download more work. It also might make more sense to run just 1 project on your computer, as Crandles suggests.

The maximum allowed size is 100x100 pixels and 4k in jpg or png format. I think it actually <b>prefers</b> the size to be 100x100 pixels.

Hope that helped :)

PS: That error message seems to indicate that there is code to scale the avatar, but it doesn't work. Also don't forget you can't use an off-line avatar, you have to upload it to the site.

Unfortunately setispy is no longr being developed as apparently the programmer died:(

There is a program called <a href="http://www.bjoernhenke.de/">BOINCLogX</a> that does a similar job, I believe. There are several others that escape my mind :(

Good luck finding your program :)

PS: It has a handy companion program called SETI@home-MapView that plots Seti workunits on a skymap.

A trickle is a good thing :) It means that your model is still running smoothly.
Every time the model trickles it is reporting that it has progressed to that particular point. I <b>think</b> it also includes a very brief summary of results since the last trickle.

Here is a quote from the FAQ:
"A timestep represents a 1/2 hour of model time (not realtime).
Every 10,802 timesteps your model will trickle (report), and there are 24 trickles in a phase.
When you know that a model year is 12 months of 30 days (not 365 days),
you can work out that a phase is 15 years 1 day of model time (not realtime).
Each model is comprised of 3 phases."

"Here's some rough performance numbers for a reasonably quick P4, using 1 logical cpu:

Timestep = 2.2 Seconds
Trickle = 6.6 Hours
Phase = 6.6 Days
Model = 19.8 Days"

Note - all the above is quoted from the FAQ

In theory it does, but apparently it is notoriously bad at it. It probably is better to monitor Bionc using one of several scripts and programs and dial up yourself when it needs to return a trickle or result, telling it to update the project when you do (sorry - cant remember the 'update' command - buried somewhere on the boinc website)

<a href="http://www.boincstats.com/"><img src="http://www.boincstats.com/stats/banner.php?cpid=7cbf470a82da52fef2efcb6e2d35844c" border="0"></a>

PS: remember with CPDN at least you can wait for several trickles before returning them :)
PPS: You have to change your server-side settings to reflect that you are using dail-up

&gt; From my understanding , its better to use a value larger than your hard disk,
&gt; eg 100 Gb if you have an 80 Gb hard drive. Remember to change this value after
&gt; you have detached CPDN, as your other projects won't download any workunits
&gt; either.
&gt;
Forgot to mention that it is the 'Leave at least x Gbytes free' felid you have to change.

Unfortunately, as you've realised, CPDN is the most punishing and demanding of the BOINC projects.

It will find errors that most diagnostic software doesn't even look for :(

good luck and keep BIONCing away :)

On the subject of plastic bags, regulating them can have unintented side-effects.

South Africa had a massive problem with supermarket plastic bags. The Government introduced legislation to make the supermarkets charge for them. The thrown-away
bags disappeared.

But so did the supermarket bag packers - a massive blow in a country with 45% umemployment. On top of that, many unemployed woman used to weave colourful mats from the bags to earn some money. This source of income was lost overnight.

&gt; I live in California's Central Valley where it gets quite hot in the summer,
&gt; and air conditioners already stress the power system. And of course we had the
&gt; energy crisis a few years ago.
&gt;
From my understanding of the matter, the California energy crisis was caused by politics.

Reagan when Governer of California allowed the energy companies to overinvest in nuclear power stations, which never came online and later as President deregulated the energy companies.

Greedy deregulated energy companies withholding reserves, to keep energy prices up to repay their overexposure in nuclear power caused that Energy Crisis, _not_ incompetent Democrats. And now California is stuck with another brain-dead Republican as Governer.

Of course I may be wrong and welcome correction.
