21) Message boards : Number crunching : Loss of Project Total Credits (Message 37716)
Posted 13 Aug 2009 by Profile Saenger
Post:
As I mentioned earlier, my total credits (one figure anyway) dropped to 674,568 from 687,889.
It has now remarkably shot up to an impossible 708,629.

I had a look at my results, and a lot of old results finally got purged from the database. That\'s very fine, so I could delete those obsolete computers from my list.

Of the results from my current computer some got purged as well, but most are still there. But all have more credits rewarded as a few days ago. HADSM went from 6805 to 7145, Mid.Holocene from 9074 to 9527.
18 MidHol and 14 Slab means (14 * 340) + (18 * 453) = 12914

That\'s a bit more than half of my new credits.

Edit:
F***, now that I gained 23K credits in one day I lost 7 places in the ranks, expected something else :D
From 2486 to 2493.
A lot of other people must have gained considerably as well.

Same problem here, I went from 143K down to 136K approximately.

If I look under your name here it tells me you\'ve got 142,957 credits.
If I go to your account it says the same.
The old exported XML-data taken from the BOINC server beneath the CPDN-data sows less, but that\'s perfectly normal.

I got a huge jump in my credits since yesterday, from 484K to 507K, I was about to post this quite happyly until I saw this bunch of posts complaining about lost credits.

I\'ll rejoice nevertheless ;)

Hurray, I got lot\'s of credits granted since yesterday!
23) Message boards : Number crunching : MidHolocene suddenly not for Linux any more? (Message 37710)

Post:
I crunched successfully 18 MidHolocene WUs, and according to the server status page there are tons of them available:
HADSM3-MH Results ready to send 94,698

But my BOINC tells me:
Do 13 Aug 2009 17:54:16 CEST|climateprediction.net|Sending scheduler request: To fetch work. Requesting 21368 seconds of work, reporting 0 completed tasks
Do 13 Aug 2009 17:54:21 CEST|climateprediction.net|Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks
Do 13 Aug 2009 17:54:21 CEST|climateprediction.net|Message from server: No work sent
Do 13 Aug 2009 17:54:21 CEST|climateprediction.net|Message from server: UK Met Office HADSM3 Mid-Holocene is not available for your type of computer.
Do 13 Aug 2009 17:54:21 CEST|climateprediction.net|Message from server: No work available for the applications you have selected. Please check your settings on the web site.

Why am I suddenly not suitable any more?
I\'ve looked a former results and there was no homogeneous redundancy activated, my wingmen were from all OS-types.

HADCM don\'t run that good on my puter, at least compared to HADSM.
My only succesfull WU took 1.6574 s/TS or 26c/h, two others failed after quite a lot of time with kind of the same speed.

On my current computer:
My 8 HADSM-MH models so far had a s/TS rate between 0.5187 and 0.6130, the current 9th is running at 0.6410.

My 7 HADSM varied between 0.6125 and 0.5274.

I\'ve registered that some other projects, and especially another CPDN-WU running in parallel are significantly slowing down the crunching.

You can see quite exactly when another CPDN, in this case a beta, ran in parallel.

What I recognised with my Intel Quad (and already with the Duo before) is the better speed if only one model is running at the time. Two or more models running simultaneous slow the WUs considerably, down to half the speed.

It would be interesting to know whether this happens with AMD as well.

Tolu\'s now made nearly all the models BOINC6-compliant and in some cases has added other changes as well.

Almost ;)
I\'ll give the other ones a try.

I\'m sure your very nice computer is one reason for the fast crunching.....

That may be one part of it, but...
This is not about CPDN vs. other projects but HADSM vs. HADAM vs HADCM vs MidHol on the same machine. A look at the current applications shows me, I have to test one of all again, the apps are newer than my last test, except the one for HADSM-Lin64, which is still 5.10.

The current MidHol seem to be even better than the usual HADSM. The HADSMs average about something around 58 c/h (0.53 s/TS) they are above 60 c/h (Current has 0.52 s/TS)

If you crunch CPDN on a 64bit Linux system on an Intel Quad, choose them ;)
If you run more than one in parallel the performance goes down significantly btw.

When the BOINC6-compliant models currently being beta-tested are released on CPDN, the new model versions may perform differently on particular computers and OSs, so we\'ll need to look at their credits/hour again.

Will they be marked somehow?
I\'d like to keep track of them if I got them.

I\'ve got an E8400 @ 3.0GHz but it doesn\'t crunch that fast!

Y\'know, it finished OK and your graphs look plausible. So, I\'d say mission accomplished.

My current one is @0.533 now, that\'s 58 C/h. My puter is a Q9450 running @3.2GHz under 64bit ubuntu8.04.

The HADSM run with more than double the credit rate as HADAM (26 C/h) and 50% more than HADCM (40 C/h)

It finished fine, it has just a bit too small value for Average (sec/TS): 0.5372, it should be something like 0.5617.

I\'ll give the restart a try.

I did, I slept a while, and now the clock is running again.
Only it has started where it was stuck. This will be either a very good Credits/h ratio, if the 5.5h are just not counted, or I will have more trickles as usual, let\'s wait and see, in probably about a week or so it should be finished.

As you can see in the link in my first post the last trickle has a lower number in CPU Time (sec) than the one before (#51: 310017sec, #52: 296924sec). It\'s still running, I don\'t see any obvious wrong with the WU on my puter besides the short time, so I hope for the best.

Thanks anyway.

Keeping in mind that one should NEVER interrupt a slab model once it has started it\'s end-of-phase activity until it has gone past the first checkpoint in the new phase, Exiting from BOINC, and re-starting BOINC, will sort out at least 2 problems:

1) The \'blobby\' text on the globe display
2) The failure of the gui to pick up changes to the model\'s percentage. (And perhaps other un-updated info.)

If anything has interupted the model it was BOINC, the puter (and so BOINC) was not turned off since Wednesday morning.

I next to never look at the graphics, I don\'t even know how to install it as a screen saver under Linux, so I don\'t know nothing about anything \'blobby\'.

I\'ll give the restart a try.

I\'ve already posted it in the other forum, I don\'t know which one is better frequented as usually I don\'t have so much questions any more ;) Here\'s what has happened:

I first thought my WU was stuck in a loop, as was mentioned in other threads. It uses one full core of my quad, but neither the CPU-time nor the percentage moved anyhow in the last few hours, they are stuck at 81:09:25 and 66.666%.

Then all of a sudden a trickle was send an hour ago, and a look at my trickles revealed: the last one was sent after 84:27:26h, and it\'s #2 of the 3rd phase of this HADSM. There was even one before that at 82:48:19h that I didn\'t find first.

I\'m a bit calmer now in regard of wasted CPU-time through looping, but I still don\'t like the stuck clock. Is there anything I can do about it?

As I said, The BBC credits are mentioned separately and specifically only for the benefit of BBC crunchers, most of whom are BOINC illiterate.

Everyone else should be aware of how to see their credits for other projects.

With this explanation you have to throw out Classic, Beta and Spinup as well, at least the latter two are just insiders, who knew exactly what was going on.

I just want consistancy, and that is imho either all sub-projects listed, or none. (or, if you think the BBCers are still dumb enough not to know about it, what I doubt, just BBC).

SAP totals are not going to be shown in that section.

The BBC totals are shown (and ONLY as a number, which ISN\'T in the total in the previous section), because a lot of the BBC crunchers were bereft at the thought of their credits being \'lost\'. A lot of them still hadn\'t/haven\'t \'gotten to grips\' with the idea of seeing totals on the external stats sites, and wanted them shown here.

And you know have much strife THAT caused, when Carl\'s first attempt went wrong and the incorrect totals got out to the external stat sites before he could correct it! So, NEVER AGAIN!
SAP totals are on the SAP site and the external stats sites.

I\'m not talking about adding credits somewhere, I just ask why is there a difference between the handling of BBC and SAP in this part of \"Your Account\":
Credit From Other Affiliated climateprediction.net Projects
NB: Classic, Spinup, and Beta Test credits are factored in the above total credit
Seasonal Attribution and BBC Experiment Projects are credited on their particular sites (and the BOINC stats sites)
NB: Classic, Spinup, and Beta Test credits are factored in the above total credit
Seasonal Attribution and BBC Experiment Projects are credited on their particular sites (and the BOINC stats sites)

\'Classic\' HadSM3 Cobblestone Credits 0.00
HadCM3 Spinup Cobblestone Credits 0.00
Beta Testing 0.00
BBC Experiment 0.00

BBC is in it, SAP is missing without explanation.
I have never crunched for BBC, just for SAP, so the 0.00 are correct for me, in SAP there would be a 5,184.00.

I see no difference between BBC and SAP, the headline makes no difference, but the stats are shown for BBC and not shown for SAP.

In the account info is the following headline:
Credit From Other Affiliated climateprediction.net Projects
NB: Classic, Spinup, and Beta Test credits are factored in the above total credit
Seasonal Attribution and BBC Experiment Projects are credited on their particular sites (and the BOINC stats sites)

While BBC is shown (with 0.00 credits in my account as i never crunched for it) SAP is missing despite it\'s mentioning.

When will the 2 (headline and content) be corrected in either way: delete SAP from headline or show credits in info part?
