C,

I have upgraded the RAM on this machine and still receive the same computation error after about a minute run time on th ehadsm3 model. Sulphur seems to be running though, although it\'s probably too early to tell for sure.

The Open Uni downlaod page bears the following statement:

\"If you are a Mac or Linux user, we are almost ready to launch a client for you. If you would like to help us test it, please sign up here\"

Can anybody tell me when this is going to happen?

If I click \"here\" and fill out the form, I receive the following deadend message:
Warning: mysql_connect(): Can\'t connect to local MySQL server through socket \'/tmp/mysql.sock\' (2) in /var/www/html/insecure/user/postbeta.php on line 6 Could not connect : Can\'t connect to local MySQL server through socket \'/tmp/mysql.sock\' (2)

I\'d like to get the model running and would appreciate any help that can be offered. Thanks in advance

I take it then that doubling the RAM may assist me - I have been considering upgrading, so perhaps this is a good opportunity....

Andrew:
I just looked at your computer\'s results and saw that it exited with std error 255. The BOINC Wiki says that means it couldn\'t allocate a memory region. I also saw that you only have 256MB RAM in your computer. It may be that you don\'t have sufficient memory to run CPDN.

Thanks Tolu

I have done that and let it run for a while (had to wait for a SETI project to conclude - hence the delay in responding to you), but it again gives me the Computational error message. Any ideas? What\'s the next step?

I\'m attempting the OU course, so if I don\'t get this running soon, I may have to pull out of that.

Andrew

Yes, try reattaching to the project.

I\'ve done that and reset the project, but it seems to be at a stand still. The last message says \"schedule_cups: must schedule\".

Sorry to seem really dense, but I am not familiar with the jargon: where do I find the contents of the
stdout and stderr file? Is this the messages in the Boinc client? If so, how do I paste them to a reply like this - the usual paste commands do nothing in this reply box.

Rather than reset, should I detach and then attach the projects again?

I hadn\'t seen it, but what does it install other than the opt/library/ files, which I have already installed manually?

Have you seen this post?

I followed the instructions given by Clay (THANKS! Clay) at:
http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=2635
and thought I had success as CP started to run. Repeatedly it ceases with the message \"computation error\" after various percentages of progress.

Can anybody help me get this running before I give up entirely and go back running SETI on it\'s own - at least that works seamlessly with my computer and any functions I carry out on it. :-( I\'ve been backfard and forward through the forum looking ofr similar situations and the fixes I have found seem good; only, they work only part of the way.

I\'m using an Power Macintosh G4 1GHz with OS X 10.4.2, recently updated, permissions verified, with Boinc 4.43; running 24/7 and occassionally disconnected from Broadband. ANY help and assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I found another message on this forum with instructions that work! I seem to be up and running after following them carefully. They appear in a message with solution written by Clay (THANKS! Clay) at:
http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=2635

I copy the solution here to save time going to that message and to increase the chance of others finding the solution:

As to Climate not running: the current setup is looking for a few library files with an erroneous path. To make climate run, I simply put these files where the model expects them.

- Create a folder name \"opt\" on the top level of your boot drive. In it create a folder named \"ibmcmp\" and in that folder create one named \"lib\".

- Copy the following three files: \"libxlsmp.A.dylib\" \"libxlfmath.A.dylib\" and \"libxlf90.A.dylib\" into the \"lib\" folder. You will find these files in /Library/Application Support/Boinc Data/projects/climateprediction.net/. (If running Menubar, look for a similar location in your hime area.)

- Restart climate and all should be well. (Though I had one model crash out of the box. BOINC promptly threw it away and got a new one which ran, so no problem with that.)

As to scheduling, I experience the problem as well, but only on my dual CPU macs. It seems to be most troublesome with Einstein, so I\'ve discontinued Einstein on my duals. However, at times I do see the duals (with Climate, Protein & SETI) trying to run 3 threads simultaneously. Though this reduces overall productivity of BOINC (due to decreased memory cache effectiveness) it, IMO, isn\'t that big a deal. Another poster mentioned that there is a 4.44 in the works to address scheduling problems.

Hope this works for you and whoever else is battling to get going.

All the best

I have the same problem it seems. I'm on a G4 iMac 1GHz. I'm told that the data is 100% complete (very fast!!) but under the status column, is written Computation error. My messages show computational times in only seconds!

Can anybody out there help us please?

It's me again already. I followed Snake's advice to Caroline Webb who had a similar problem: i.e. i linked to the SETI GUI and had instant success. I take it that I don't still need CP Control, now that I have the full Boinc program?

> You have downloaded the "Command Line Interface" (CLI) version of BOINC. You
> may find the "Graphical User Interface" (GUI) version more to your liking. Go
&gt; to <A> HREF="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/index.php"&gt;http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/index.php</A>
&gt; on this website and follow the download steps there. If that is where you got
&gt; the version of BOINC you already have, then try <A> HREF="http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/index.php"&gt;http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/index.php</A>
&gt; and use the link to their "Download" page or go direct to the page <A> HREF="http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php"&gt;http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php</A>.
&gt;
&gt; At the SETI site you can choose to download one or both GUI BOINC Clients. It
&gt; does not matter where you actually get the BOINC client they are all the same.
&gt; The Menubar version is easy to use but provides a little less control over
&gt; individual projects. It does have the advantage of showing you a text
&gt; description of the Climate model while it is running. The Desktop GUI is a
&gt; little more flexible in allowing you to control things, but it will only show
&gt; you when the model is running with no real details.
&gt;
&gt; If you have not already done so create a user account here at climate
&gt; prediction using an e-mail box you are sure will deliver mail from England.
&gt; Yahoo and hotmail both work, currently Verizon does not. After you create
&gt; your account you will get an e-mail with a Web address and a long series of
&gt; number and letters (your account key) as described in the previous post.
&gt;
&gt; After you install the GUI BOINC Client of your choice, start it up, and open
&gt; the BOINC Manager window from the BOINC menu. Click on the button "Attach to
&gt; New Project". When it asks for the web address and account key copy them from
&gt; your e-mail and paste them in to the appropriate fields. The system will
&gt; automatically load the correct Climate prediction software, download your
&gt; first model(s), and start running.
&gt;
&gt; You should not be shocked by the size of the model or the projected time for
&gt; completion. You will be given credit as the model progresses. depending on
&gt; the speed of your system it could take a few days between "trickles" each
&gt; trickle is worth about 95 credits, and there are 72 trickles in a model.
&gt; Stick with it is is fun.
&gt;
&gt; For instruction on how to actually view the model as it is running see <A> HREF="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=3040"&gt;this
&gt; post</A>.

Snake,

I had a similar problem to Caroline and your answer to her certainly got me up and running (apologies, it was me who pressed the "this solved my problem" button, not Caroline!). There seems to me that there is something amis with the boinc folder unstuffed from the climatepredict site, since the GUI Boinc from the Seti link you provided worked straight away, provides a different launch icon (folder) in Applications and I now find all the missing files and the climatepredict.net folder are available.

I'm running seti classic. Should I leave it like that, or move it to the boin version?

Do I still need the program CP Control?

Thank you Arnaud. Yes, I registered in October 2004, but was put off by the diffiuclty of getting anything of the climatepredict to work, especially after the ease with which SETI@home loaded and ran.

I did receive a message with a long string of numbers for a Account ID and the URL:http://climateprediction.net. I have entered both into the CP Control prefences, but to no avail. I've also used the buttons to attach a project but nothing happens. CP Control does run, but after two days it still shows 0%.

What I couldn't find out, both from the climatepredict forums and from your WIKI link which I discovered earlier in a forum, is how to attach to a project once the account and CP Control are active.

It looks like Caroline Webb had a similar problem, and I was about to work through that thread to see if I could get anywhere. Shall I do that, rather than subject you to more question-answer-question correspondence?

15) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : CPDN/BOINC beta test signup page style (Message 15735)
Posted 6 Sep 2005 by old_user28007
Post:
I'm an OU student battling to get the program started and not finding answers to the problem. I'm using a G4 iMac, and have loaded CP Control, which runs. I already use SETI@home without a glitch.

In the OU pages, The "CPDN/BOINC beta test signup page style" page seems to be dud - I get an error when I fill in the form, which reads:

Warning: mysql_connect(): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2) in /var/www/html/insecure/user/postbeta.php on line 6
Could not connect : Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)

Can anybody help me with this?

Snake, thanks

I don't see the folder named "BOINC Data". Where do I get it from? When I downloaded the program all that arrived was the folder boinc_4.43_darwin, continaing 2 files: boinc and boinc_cmd. I'm using an iMac G4, 1GHz machine and I'm pretty desperate to get ging as I have signed up for the OU course. I have CP Control successfully running and I've been using a stand alone version of SETI@home for some years now (i.e. prior to loading CP Control).

Any help would be gratefully received.

17) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : Open BOINC with which application? (Message 15708)
Posted 5 Sep 2005 by old_user28007
Post:
&gt; There is a quicker way of opening BOINC that works for me and should for you,
&gt; eliminating the need for typing commands.
&gt; I launch Terminal then I go to the 'boinc_4.13_powerpc-apple-darwin' app in my
&gt; Boinc forlder and drag it into Terminal, then just press Return. Boinc lanches
&gt; without any further instructions.
&gt;
&gt;
&gt;
Thanks KSD - that's the sort of easy procedure I was looking for. Nevertheless, i still seem to have no action. Do I have to give some instruction to kick this thing into gear? I already use the SETI@home program, which is so easy - this climate model seems conversly difficult to get going. Any help would be appreciated, especially since I'm not at all familiar with Terminal.

Andrew
